San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is a seaside village located on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. It is becoming more and more popular with eash passing day as a tourist destination, some say it will one day be even more popular to go to the beaches of San Juan del Sur than to the beaches of Costa Rica.  An interesting fact about San Juan del Sur is that it was a very popular resting place for gold propsectors making their way North to California during the gold rush.

San Juan del Sur has a population of roughly 18,500 permenant residents. These include local Nicaraguans as the base and toss in a healthy dose of Americans, Canadians and Europeans who have businesses or other interests in San Juan del Sur.

San Juan del Sur appeals to a great number of tourists because of the myriad of things to do there. Here are some of the things that you can do while visiting San Juan del Sur:

Take Spanish Lessons: San Juan del Sur is ver popular for its home-stay style of Spanish immersion courses. If you are planning to stay a while it is a good idea to get into one of these courses if you don’t speak so that you can pick up some Spanish to speak to the locals, and get full value out of your stay in San Juan del Sur.

Go Surfing: San Juan del Sur is really creating a name for itself in terms of being a surfing destination. It has many different beaches in the area. Some beaches have big waves, while others have little waves. So it is becoming a popular to place to go both for learning how to surf and also for the surf enthusiasts who want Hawaii style waves at Central America prices.

Go Fishing: San Juan del Sur is a fishing community. Fishing was the backbone of the local economy for many years and is still and integral part of it.  Some of the marine life you can reel in in San Juan del Sur are Mackerals, Rooster Fish, Black Marlin, Dorado and Woohoos.

You can go with a local, charter a boat, or even just cast your line from the shore into the surf

Do Yoga: I personally don’t see what all the fuss is about, but in San Juan del Sur you can find some of the best indoor facilities and yoga instructors in Nicaragua. But why go to an indoor facility when you have a very tranquil setting such as a sunset at one of the beaches in the area?

Horseback Riding:  Horseback riding is very popular for tropical destinations and San Juan del Sur is no different. Whether you want to go for a sunset ride along the beach, or have a romantic jaunt through the forest San Juan del Sur has the perfect setting for your Horseback Riding wants. Renting a horse will probably run you $10 per hour or so, but it is well worth it for the views you can experience from Horseback.
