Poverty: The impossible is possible

According to Dr. Hans Rosling, most people’s world knowledge was accurate in the year their teachers were born. As an example, the view that divides the world into two distinct parts, rich and poor, corresponded to the reality of the world in 1950 – it has changed since then.

A Partnership for a New Latin America

"It is Latin America's time to shine." Luis Alberto Moreno believes this is Latin America's decade and, as the most influential development banker in the western hemisphere, he's in a position to make that difference. Last summer, Moreno was re-elected to another five years as head of the Inter American Development Bank.

A Partnership for a New Latin America is an article he wrote for the Huffington Post in February.

US Diplomacy in Nicaragua

An article in Scoop has the usual assortment of politics in it but I found the most telling thing to be the economics side. The example offered has to do with a $2 billion aid program.

Indirectly about NICA but

related to a lot of the points raised on here by the spooks under every leaf crowd.

Is it policy? No...but a pretty strong statement from an influential guy.

World Economics and Nicaragua

The word that comes to mind is petroleum. While the US managed to neutralize Iraq, the other petroleum-rich nations of the Middle East are clearly in a state of flux. The fall of the governments in Tunisia and Egypt were clearly just the beginning in the region. The biggest pro-US player, Saudi Arabia is clearly in trouble as this post points out.

Kinzer on Egypt and Nicaragua Parallels

While we already brought up the idea of parallels between the Nicaraguan revolution and what is happening in Egypt, Stephen Kinzer checks in on this subject. Kinzer, a career journalist, was reporting on Nicaragua oh so long ago which puts him is a great position to draw parallels and point out differences between the two revolutions.

Rivera Says: Mubarak==Somoza

From what I personally would consider an unlikely source, Fox News Latino, Giraldo Rivera draws parallels between Mubarak and Somoza. He then goes on to compare what has happened in Latin America with what he expects to see happen in the Middle East.

Chavez a Liar.

Jorge Ramos anchor of Univision's news show Noticias Univision, found it that President Hugo Chavez during a interview in 1998 before his election like Venezuelan President, lie about 3 main issues that has characterized his authoritarian government over 13 years. But close the interview with a incredible assertion in response to a question of Jorge Ramos; CUBA IS A DICTATORSHIP !!! THE ONLY TRUTH IN THE INTERVIEW. PD: naturally the interview is in Spanish, never has seen Chavez speaking english or at least giving some interview in that language.

Why Third-World Inflation

An article titled The Canary in the Coal Mine is in Southeast Asia offers an interesting read on why inflation in the third world at least sometimes doesn't make sense. The example offered is Laos because it would seem it should not be the victim of this inflation.

The perceived problem is explained like this.

Should Coca Leaf Chewing be Legal?

From an article in AFP we find the following:

Bolivia has petitioned the United Nations to overturn a provision of the 1961 UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which considers the coca leaf a narcotic and calls on countries to eradicate coca leaf chewing.
