CoyotepeSubmitted by Mark on 6 July, 2007 - 23:03.
![]() Been away for some time and please enjoy this one. This is Coyotepe 1912 with Masaya lagoon in backround on right. Not even the boy scouts who today manage the fort have seen this. Pictured here are federal troops taking it easy on guard duty. This photo was taken about one month after Smedley Butler and his 250 marines creeped up hand in hand to the base of the hill in complete darkness. At 4:30am they stormed the hill and took control of this high point that was being used to shell the railroad line to Granada from Managua. After the Marines took control they used this vantage to take control of Baranca another high spot. If you notice today the 2 top blocks have been removed so today there is the castle effect. Understand that what you see today is almost the same except these 2 top blocks were removed in the 1920's and most all is painted white. Enjoy! ( categories: )
