According
to today's LP and END, they were a perfectly legal shipment to a company in Managua which sells firearms. Apparently there was a mistake made on the label, which said that there were 500 rifles, and there were actually 1,085 firearms of various types & calibers, meant for sporting use & hunting.
Much news, all the same
Lots of media outlets are reporting this same story. The only problem is that it is exactly the same story. No new information. It does start to look like a plant to get people thinking about, well, something. We'll see.
Another reference ABC Spania
Another reference ABC Spania . I was going to post it and saw that Phil has already done it.
Oh, by the way isn't this the Nicaragua-Mojahedin (similar to IranContra) ? :) :D Previous time Israel sold arms to Iran and the money was sent to Contras. This time perhaps they are selling arms to Nicaragua and send the money to Mojahedine-Khalgh (Anti-Iranian-government terrorist organization) to make their sins reverse :)
Just a joke!
ourman
Scary, I read about it on another website that made the obvious suggestion that if guns are coming to Nicaragua from Israel (bearing in mind the political ties of Israel) then the chances are it's for anti-government forces, rather than for state use.
Should we be worried?
Conspiracy
Israel is Funding Nicaraguan pro Jewish groups (who will not be called terrorists in the US Media) to fight against Daniel Ortega because of his statements against Israel.
Or they are headed to Venezuela via Nicaragua, as Venezuela is too embarrassed to buy directly from Israel, or as to not upset Iran.
What? Repeat, WHAT?
Why would anyone be worried? 100's of 22 caliber pistols and 22 rifles. Are you kidding? They are used to hunt squirrels and shoot at empty coke cans. 300's of air compression rifles. Sounds impressive til you realize that is euphemism for stupid b.b. guns. Shotguns? Who goes to war with a shotgun? It is a defensive weapon militarily or a bird gun. So they had 100 9mms tossed in there. So what. If anyone in Nicaragua needs 100 good handguns, go to Honduras or Panama and buy them (cant be 9mm here in HN though since that caliber is reserved for police - so get a 45 or 383 which is better or aint all that different with the right cartridges). Better to chose Honduras as the route as there is no middle country with a police that sometimes actuallie do their job. All of international shipping is based on cooking the inventory bill. That cushion from the undeclared goodies is what pays the trip, often. This is not so much a news story at all. Compared to real news stories about guns or arms transfers this is almost something from a tv sitcom. It is not even clear why the confiscation could happen for the air rifles since they are really said to be declared on the papers. Guess they keep it all waiting for a bribe...
- nicaragua government is
- nicaragua government is not under arms emabargo so why they should buy arms this way.
- Why they should buy from Israel
- Why they should buy stolen arms?
Then it's obvious that they are not intended for Nica government.
Probably
My guess is that it was for the "drug industry" but, who knows. Considering Israel was the last supplier of arms for Somoza after he was cut off by the US, I agree that it isn't likely it was an order for the government.
I must admit when I read it
I must admit when I read it the hairs on the back of my neck stood up but drugs seems a slightly less scary option.
Then again their must be other places for drug runners to get guns that are closer to hand - or maybe you just get them from wherever you can.
Yeah ourman
That's what I figured too. Why would cocoleros import guns from Israel via Spain when Colombia and Panama are awash with cheap Ak 47s? Also, it would have to be a pretty big drug gang to buy more than 1,000 weapons.
I wonder whether the arms in question have special features that make them superior.
I hate to admit it but when
I hate to admit it but when guns come from Israel to Nicaragua, what you least want to believe, seems the most likely option.
Spelling it out:
1. Israelis would not send weapons to this Nica Government 2. Nicaragua is boosting links with Iran 3. The US government does not like Ortega or Chavez's axis of Pain in the Arse-ism 4. Israel and the US are very close 5. Israel receives a massive amount of aid (both general and military) from the USA. 6. Guns are hardly hard to come by in this area with Columbia and Panama so close. 7. If these guns got stopped by customs - the chances are many more got through.
Okay - not exactly worried yet but certainly a little curious. I don't think we're talking Contras Mk II here, but perhaps general disruption that could be blamed on a seemingly "weak" or "ill-organised" government could be the aim. Hey, why not let the media and electorate do your dirty work.
Let's face it even a boost in drug activity in Nicaragua might be enjoyed in certain quarters . It was a big enough excuse to invade Panama and to kick out their enemy Noriega.
Or am I going nuts?
I think if our US friend
I don't understand what is this mess. What has Nicaragua done for gods sake to be handled this way? Why Israeli's should want to send such a huge amount of arms to a small and relatively poor country? I say If the Israeli government has been behind this, US agencies have approved it.
Or could it be
that it is all about money? A simple legal business transaction with the paperwork gone wrong?
I can just see the drug runners terrorize the general public with BB guns.
Of course any straight thinking revolutionary would try to get his hands on as many 22 caliber rifles and pistols as he could. We all know what powerful weapons they are.
As for the 9mm .... I can buy just about as many as I wish in Managua. (Maybe for a little more money but with a whole lot fewer problems).
the guns are...
according to here:
http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2007/07/361839.shtml
400 pistols, 300 rifles and 380 carbines
Personally, anything that can shoot a lump of lead at me, at anything approaching high velocity, would be enough to terrorise me.
but it does sound . . .
more like a Walmart order than an insurgency ; )
maaaan, what is it with the
maaaan, what is it with the American attitude to guns.
The very mention of them scares the crap out of me.
