Bringing Guns Into Nicaragua

Submitted by Sue on 11 June, 2007 - 09:21.

We are a couple of weeks away from moving down to our finca, and I want to bring both a shotgun and my pistol. Anyone got a copy of the current gun law ? Or info on getting whatever documents are required ? What's the availability of 12 guage shotgun shells and 40 cal ammo ? Any restrictions on types of rifles ? What do y'all carry down there ? Can you get Hoppes #9 solvent and other cleaning supplies or what are you using ?

Hey Let Me Guess

You're Canadian, right ? Jelous are ya ? Sure I'm American. I'm also a farmer who happens to live a mile or so from the Gifford Pinchot National Wilderness Area. The guns are tools to me. Time to slaughter a goat/lamb / steer ? 180 GR round to the back of the head & it's dead before it hits the deck. Very humane. Ditto to put down the neighbors horse when it snapped a leg bone. Cougar, bear, coyote ? Yep got them too & while I won't hunt them they're not gonna hunt me. Fox in the henhouse ? Idiot on a cel phone hit an elk & elk in agony on side of road? Gun will fix that too. Hungry elderly neighbor ? Four hungry working farm dogs ? Fat doe eating all your corn ? One slug / one less doe / freezer full & everyone else too. Crack head ? Meth addict ? Sex offender in the area? A little target practice once in awhile & the word gets around & they look elsewhere for a victim. So to answer your question - we don't have a problem here. We don't / can't rely on the sherrif's dept. to protect us here - they admit they can't. Don't see that it'll be much different in Nicaragua. Maybe elswhere there's problems but that's their issue.

why do you americans always assume everyone is "jealous" of you when we criticize you! Honest - you couldn't pay me - or 98% of other Canadians - to be a citizen of the "land of the free". It IS different in nicaragua! If you just want to make it be just like the ole yoonited states ... STAY HOME

Not Different

In that you cannot rely on the police to stop all criminals. Will you criticize me for my ability to defend myself, or put food on the table ? In whatever country ? Many law abiding Canadians would like to own a gun but cannot : they envy Americans RIGHT to keep & bear arms. So, not jealous of being an American, I meant maybe jealous of that right ? Nicaragua will always be Nicaragua and nothing I do will change that. As far as staying home my home is on my finca.- When you capitalize Canadian but Nicaragua is in lower case and United States is grossly mispelled...speaks volumes Seems I remember Canada was paying people to immigrate there. The US doesn't have that problem. Both countries are far from perfect tho.

hey let me guess... Americans, right? Don't you have enough problems with guns in your own country!?

No.... not really..

just with people that don't use them right.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate

Article 24

Makes a differentiation between "Legal" and "Natural" persons re lic. to carry for personal protection. As long as you have a Cedula you are ok for that type of license tho ? FWIW I have a Concealed Carry License in the US.

Might be easier to purchase guns in Nicaragua but I really like my Bullpup and I would be loathe to part with my HK 40 compact. The Bullpup was a Christmas present so I don't have a receipt for it. How do you get around that ? Do the receipts need to be authenticated at the Consulate ? Thanks for all the info, esp. ley 510

i have a concealed weapons permit on a handgun i bought in nicaragua in order to get this permit which only will cover each individual gun-you must have a cedula-i had to get a copy of my police record in granada, nicaragua, a statemet saying there was no judicial action against me, see a medical doctor, a psychologist, and have an interview with the local police chief, and had to wait a few weeks-i also want to bring a shotgun down the next time i come down-you have to tell the federal authorities in the usa and also in nicaragua-the best place to find out this info is through INTUR-i have an email address for the lady who help me get my cedula who speaks very good english-email me at ttexas@earthlink.net and i will give you her email address-let me know what you find out-tucker

You need..

A US export permit to export firearms, and a certificate from the Nicaragua consulate. If you have the bucks, you can buy guns in Nic and get a permit to carry from the local police station. Be prepared to grease a palm or two.

The law

I went here for the law. This URL is very strange. If it doesn't work, click on Links in the upper right, then Government Contacts and Web Sites and finally Nicaraguan Laws to get to the government search page.

My quick look says:

  • You must have a cédula
  • Anything up to 45 cal is fine as long as it is not automatic

Most of the security guards here have 12 guage shotguns so that should be easy.

resident

I think you have to be a resident to carry a firearm on your person.
