is there any sense bc ortega is in power and his sentiment against america as reflected in this song, "The FSLN hymn by Carlos Mejia Godoy - Fight with us against the yankees, enemy of mankind."

When I went to see Carlos Mejia Godoy, about half the audience was "very white". I wouldn't worry about the song--people here seem to be very good at separating actions of a government from actions of individuals.

For sure, someone will be on the "bad guy" list but you need to look a bit more at the mix here.

  • Nicaraguans come in all colors. (Kenia, daughter of a friend who lived with me for a while, is about as light as most "paleface gringos".
  • There are lots of people here from other than the US. Canadians, Europeans, ... .
  • Most Nicaraguans are more likely to ignore you than try to kill you if they, for some reason, don't like you.

The level of reconciliation here surprises me. When I first moved here, my next door neighbor was an ex-Contra. We lived right next to the most pro-FSLN barrio in Estelí, El Rosario. He was accepted just fine and he, personally, had been an active "enemy of mankind".

Compare that with the Los Angeles I grew up in. Pretty much, if you were the wrong color or the wrong gang walking through many neighborhoods you would be killed "because you didn't belong". I will take Nicaragua--anywhere--over Los Angeles.

Now, if you went to El Rosario with a sound truck and started spouting that Ronald Reagan did the right thing in/to Nicaragua, you just moved yourself from Gringo to "enemy of mankind". Something like a pro-Hitler sound truck in a Jewish neighborhood of Los Angeles.

look for some one more respectible when you hire a taxi driver....

i know of several girls in the past 2 years that have been robbed and tossed out the door into the street by taxi drivers ....these are all nica girls.

it is good to take note of the taxi # or any info you can before going anywhere in the taxi...

this could be part of our problem in having people missing people.

who knows
