SJDS GuideSubmitted by thunderdial on 3 May, 2007 - 15:20.
Hey, I know it's not the French Quarter, but does anyone have a guide, or can give some pointers for SJDS, accomodations, nightlife? |

sjds hotels/restaurants
I also stayed at La Puerta...there is no AC but far enough of a breeze with the fan even at the hottest time of year. We loved the place and came back every time we returned to town and at 20 bucks a night for a good size very clean room, can't beat it. It's operated by a sweet German woman named Gertrude (and you know German standards). Aside from restaurants already mentioned...try any of the pasta or pizza at the place behind the park (just down the same street a block or so from Colibri)...can't miss it as the sidewalk tables are usually full. The owner is from Italy and makes his own fettucini noodles (as good as my Italian grandmothers). Nightlife in all of Nica I found on the early side as they do not do the European/Mexican siesta at lunch and therefore go to bed earlier. Bars also have a shortage of female energy and just having sold a bar and producing parties for a living...the unbalance is a rowdy combination. The expat hangouts like Big Wave Dave's are okay but still...I dunno...maybe you need to drink more than I do these days. Many local expats do happy hour on Weds (and Fridays) at Pelican Eyes. There's a pool by the bar and worth the view and meeting concerned locals. I'd make dinner more of your party and just catcxh a drink after.
My dos centavos.
For the simple life...
http://www.nicaliving.com/node/8552... El Puerto, nothing fancy, basic clean accomadations...of course El Gato Negro must for breakfast, El Timon was pretty good but a bit on the pricey side (had a whole snapper), Carin was more basic and less expensive but good food.
Have fun!!

For a comfortable and CLEAN
place to stay, try Fredrica’s B&B. It comes with AC and a private bathroom for each of the rooms. Most of the other B&B share their bathrooms. In addition, you are in town and not stuck out in the "boonies".
For a place to "hang out" "Big Wave Dave's".
The Iquana Bar is under renovation. They should re-open in about a month. It is being run by some of the staff from Ricardo's. It's no Ricardo's, but it sure is pretty darn good.
I have been to El Colibri only once but the food and sevice was good. (Planning on going there again soon).
Nightlife... well there really isn't that much unless one counts the many private parties. If you are looking for clubs.. stay in Managua or Granada.
Rivas
All this talk about San Juan Del Sur. What about Rivas? it's a busy place during the day, what's it like during the night. Mind you, with the road from SJDS to Rivas and vica-versa, it would take a brave soul to find out. I like Rivas, I have only spent time there during the day though.
Rivas
also has only limited night life. (If that's what you are looking for.) I also like Rivas. If one is reasonable comfortable speaking Spanish, there are apparently quite a few local bars that are supposed to be a lot of fun. The difference in population alone would suggest that there would be more variety in entertainment. As far as restaurants are concerned, I have so far not found any that are outstanding. If anyone knows of any GREAT restaurants in Rivas please let me know.
