A democracy which makes or even effectively prepares for modern, scientific war must necessarily cease to be democratic. No country can be really well prepared for modern war unless it is governed by a tyrant, at the head of a highly trained and perfectly obedient bureaucracy.
— Aldous Huxley, 1937, in Ch. 7 of "Ends and Means"
Is that an Apartment Building

Building on the right side of Church
Those are in fact apartments; they were built where the old Mercado Viejo was before the war 1979(ish). The green building is a jewelry store and a private home 3 stories house. Armando
the worst streets without potholes.
The majority of streets in downtown Matagalpa are paved with the typical concrete pavers but I found the streets very uneven and incredibly bumpy because of uneven settling of the stones. Is it just bad construction (perhaps bad soil compaction) or is land movement (perhaps from water table subsidence) causing the waves in the streets. I hit one spot unexpectedly and it nearly ripped the suspension out of the car I was driving. Good thing it was a rental!
My VERY good friends live on
My VERY good friends live on the right side of this street, where there is 2 small trees and a telphone poll. The Tinoco Family.
The house across the street from them, you can see the arches slightly, was owned by a retired US Marine (He passed away several years back)

People on that street
If I recall correctly, his name was Antonio (Toño) Orue, El Chele one of his son, a good fiend and Cynthia. I lived 1 1/2 blocks north from the spot the picture was taken, Bo Guanuca. You could find a Drug store at the end of the street (same right hand side).
