Masachapa / Pochomil

A little more is going on around Pochomil ... I´m sure the local business people are crossing their fingers for record crowds tomorrow.

Question about Masachapa....

What would the record crowds in Pochimil/Masachapa tomorrow be there for? I'm headed down to Masachapa from SC next week to work with a church and interested in what to expect there.

I would guess...

I would guess that the local merchants would hope for at least 1,000 to 2,000 visitors throughout the day between Masachapa and Pochomil.

I saw a couple hundred on the beaches when I flew over Sat. morning, so Sunday's crowd hopefully was much larger.

Our organization has a church in Masachapa as well (I am a missionary as well as a pilot).

During normal times: read, not Semana Santa, the area is pretty desolate with just a relatively small number of local families in each town, eking out a living fishing or selling souvenirs to the odd visitor. There are sugar cane plantations all around the area, so probably some work in that as well.

There are a lot of fancy beach front properties, but the owners usually just come down to them on weekends and vacation time. Through the week, the beach "restaurant" owners nearly starve to death. If you want to see some real scrambling ... drive your car into the restaurant area on a weekday afternoon ... they will swarm you wanting to invite you to eat at their place.

A weekday is the only time I consider going to the beach, cause I don't care to be there with tons of people around.
