Assholes in Estelí

A group of idiots are cutting down a huge guanacaste tree beside Hotel Chalet. They have broken at least one phone line and two poles are now bent.

In the photo you can see one of the jerks in the tree, a tree branch on the phone lines and the one line that is already broken. Add to their irresponsible work the fact that they would need to get a permit from MARENA to cut down the tree anyway and, well, assholes does come to mind.

Just wanted to post this before my internet connection dies again. We will deliver some photos to Enitel later today.

Report

So, report them to Morena. My neighbor did something similar (a polution problem), cost them a 50,000 cord fine.

Canta no LLores

Guy with the saw

Fyl, given what appears to be the guy's inexperience with the saw, with any luck he'll come down with the limb.

Saw?

You're giving away that you don't live here. Everything here is done with a machete. That is, from trimming your hedge to cutting down a 50+ year old huge tree.

Impressed

Gee fyl, I am getting the impression that you are not happy with this :-).

On a much lighter note, I wanted to thank you for your work in providing this site. I have learned incredibly much of Nicaragua from this site and the people who belong to it. I also want to say thanks for your contributions in pictures and comments of the Esteli and Jinotega areas. My wife and I are very interested in making one of those places our home.

It was that obvious? :-)

Well, my phone line/DSL connection is in there. But, beyond that, I like that tree a lot more than the clowns hacking on it.

Glad to be of help. My wife and I have just completed a book designed to help people "get to Nicaragua sooner". I will let people here know the details as soon as I have them. Much of the information came from information here but there is just so much more to be said I decided a book made the most sense.

Oh, and my wife seems to like the idea of making some money. :-)

I will be

one of your first buyers! Let me know when it is available.

Assholes?

You did not mention if these "assholes" own the tree or are employed by those that do. I hate to see a tree like that cut down, but I don't own it. You are right a machete is an amazing thing, I am learning & will post some pics soon of my "handy work".

When I arrived on the island 2 weeks ago the light went out for a few hours the first night & someone decided to steal 100 yards of the telephone/internet cable, took over a week to fix it, a real mess for sure.

Nope, still assholes

The person who runs the hotel did hire them. But, there are a few problems:

  • Legally, she can't cut down the tree without MARENA approval.
  • These clowns are totally irresponsible.

Anyway, Enitel knows who is doing what and has explained that the hotel is paying all the repair costs.

maybe?

They should check with their local zoning board or perhaps the neighborhood has a set of covenants regarding such things, maybe they could go to a city council meeting & plead their case, yeah right. I can only imagine the fear these hotel owners have regarding Marena or any other legalities, especially after yesterdays article in La Prensa about Aleman. Somehow Aleman's crimes seem a little bigger than someone cutting down THEIR OWN tree. Enitel eplaining to them that they are responsible for paying any repair costs is a hell of a lot different than them actually paying for any of them.

This is the National Tree of Cost Rica

Perhaps the guy has a beef against the country. What happens if he falls from the tree and lands on the machete?

Commonality

fyl I have been getting a bit of a chuckle out of all this only because I think you and I are a lot alike ;)
