Shipping donationsSubmitted by Huehuete Bob on 7 March, 2007 - 22:09.
Ok, I am writing this as a forum topic because I have 7 pentium 3 computer systems (from my former union in the U.S.)that I want to donate to the schools around Casares. Aproximately 1000 students who have no access to computers at all. Even the teachers use manual typewriters and carbon paper. I have talked to the Director of education in Managua and the director of the schools between Jinotepe and the coast. They have both assured me that if I can get them in Nicaragua the computers will go to these schools. The only problem is transportation. If anyone is sending a container from the San Francisco area I can possibly add these to the consignment. Maybe someone here may also know of another way... I tried with the consolate in S.F. (they used to send containers of donations but they dont anymore). Anyone have any other ideas???? ( categories: )

Taxing tax tax
It is wonderful that you want to make these donations...but in my limited experience, charity can be a bit frustrating in this country...many officials try to tax any electronics that cross the Nicaraguan border. we tried to bring in things like pencils and erasers and toys only to find that the border wanted to tax EACH item $1 US. Have you tried a courier company such as DHL? Perhaps you could take up a donation in your area to cover the shipping costs of these items to said schools in need. Just a thought.
Yes, I did try
I do not want to ask people here to help with this though. I will if I have no other option. Many have already donated fishing equipment, pens and pencils, books, etc. To all of you who have helped, thank you. When you come to Nicaragua you are welcome in my house as long as you want to stay.

Turmoil
Right now is not the best time to bring these in as there is some turmoil within customs as much of the leadership is being replaced. No one knows what they are doing-they may demand you pay duties. I had cloth held up for 5 weeks and they were not honoring Cafta. Finally we had to pay to get the stuff out. No one seems to know what to do as much of the leadership fears they will be replaced in the next months...
Can't blame them though as Nicaragua gets 27% or more of its revenue from these duties-A huge percentage. They have yet to find alternative sources of revenue to replace this and that is why Cafta though passed is not popular. It is written law and not fully implimented...
Also have you thought about just funding a school you like and just donating direct? That is what I do and there are some great people on Ometepe andd Rivas who could use anything in terms of supplies.
duties
The computers will come in duty free as a donation. I have already had the Administrator of schools agree to take it out of customs and deliver it to the school in Casares. And yes, I did think about direct funding to the schools. I do want to do some of that also, but since I got the computers for free I am just hoping to find a way to get them here. I did bring one laptop on the airplane for the schools just to get them started.

Yes, thank you
The only problem is transportation. Anything you could send for the schools would help. By the way I am having a donation party for the schools in the area at the beach house in Huehuete on June 30. If you can possibly make it, you are welcome to stay for a few days.

I still live in Managua
And I can have my driver pick you up, go to Casares to meet the director of schools, and then spend a few days at the house in Huehuete. I will be in the U.S. though on the first or second of July to take care of my mother while my sister is on vacation.
