I'll Have That To Go, Please

When I first visited San Juan del Sur about three years ago I knew close to no Spanish. A few of us went out to a secluded beach together. By secluded it was a few km out of town and you really couldn't get to the beach without going thru a bar/restaurant.

We all ordered some drinks and went out on the beach. It was really peaceful.

A couple of people in our group ordered more drinks but we realized it was getting dark and we should be heading back so they decided to change their order to be to go. They tried "para ir" as a guess at how you might say that. Wrong. The bartender had no idea what they were asking. Ok, try two was "para salir". Same thing. No idea what we were talking about.

They moved on to sign language pointing to the pickup truck, the real glasses and motioning that we wanted to head out. Eventually, they got it and said, "para llevar" and poured the drinks into plastic cups. Today, I remember how to say to go.
