Free Access to Schools Working

Right before the school year started, the Ministry of Education announced some changes to guarantee access to education for everyone. The biggest changes were:

  • No fees--some public schools had started charging various fees
  • Uniforms not required
  • A bunch of new teachers

On this morning's news (Radio ABC) there was a blurb about the need for 600 more student desks and some other infrastructure just in Estelí (not sure if that means the city or the department). I also know of students that are attending classes but sitting on the floor.

So, not perfect yet but it is sounding like education is moving in the right direction again--that is, like it was close to 30 years ago.
