Donations to Nicaragua

Submitted by Huehuete Bob on 12 February, 2007 - 19:29.

Today I went to the ministry of education in Nicaragua. Wanted to get people I know to get computers through the Aduanas in Nicaragua to help the poor people in Casares. At first the director said he would love to help...then the governments lawyer said that it is the responsibility of someone else to ask for donations. Politics I guess. Anyway they could not give a letter asking for donations....But the director of schools in Casares/huehuete/La Boquita/Tupilapa will write an official letter. This means that 8 computers several monitors, mice, hubs, printing devices etc. that I have requested from the Union that I once belonged to can be sent from San Francisco to Nicaragua without cost because the consulate sends one container a month of donations to Nicaragua. Just takes someone here to make sure it happens without theft. I am here and will follow the process through. Hope nothing gets lost, but if you want to contribute to the schools here let me know. I will be watching them.

right now I am working on another project. The people here in Casares have been given free land. Many of them make about 10 cordobas a day. Around 10 of them cannot pay the 450 cordobas for the planito which they need to have the land registered in their name. Some are so poor and desperate that they are offering their grand daughters to have sex with men so that they can have enough to pay for their planito. The total amount to pay for their lands would be about 250 dollars. So, anyone living here in Nicaragua who wants to help, please contact me. I will introduce you to the cooperative president and to the people in need. I am not on the internet as often as I would like now adays since I am in Huehuete where there is no internet but a couple of times a week I do have internet access. Email me if you would like to help.

Other ways to help in Nicaragua- from hard to simple

I have sent many donations to Nicaragua, usually carried as checked baggage, in customs we just said everything was personal items. Probably not the official thing to do, but it worked and we got the stuff directly to those who needed it with no middlemen.

About 12 years ago, while living in Pennsylvania, we sent a partial container full of donated items: clothing, foodstuffs, medicines, shoes, sports equipment, small appliances. We had organized an "adopt-a-family" program through our church. Each family here in the US adopted anopther family in Nicaragua. We searched for the poorest: those living in shacks with plastic roofs, single moms whose husbands had been killed in the war and left with 5 kids to raise, war vets (from both sides) with missing arms and legs. Many of those families still help their adopted family, even though we moved to Miami. Once you start helping and get others involved, it muliplies.

For the container, we sent loads of boxes vis UPS to Miami sent through the Nicaraguan-American Foundation. They shipped containers regularly and allowed us to send the items through them. I don't know if they still do this.

Since we moved to Miami, we hand-carry items when we go Nicaragua.

Often, the easiest way to help is a direct financial contributon. A small amount goes a long way in Nicaragua. We also support Building New Hope (www.buildingnewhope.org). The founders are friends we have known for 17 years. They do great work in Granada. (FYI-Donna Tabor, who is director in Granada, just joined NicaLiving a few days ago.) You can go to their website to see the work they are doing. We just took a donation of horse shoeing tools for the US vet who is helping the cooperative of horse taxi owners there take better care of their hourses. They are also in need of $ donations for Cafe Chavalos, their fantastic project which took glue-sniffing street kids off of the streets and into the restaurant, teaching them how to be chefs and restauranteurs. Go the website to see their work. You will be impressed at what a few people can do. Donations are tax-deductible as a US non-profit with 501(c)(3) status.

In Rio San Juan, where there is great need, our old friend Yaro Praslin of Sabalos Lodge (www.sabaloslodge.com) and a woman from New Orleans began a program to help the medical clinics there. Their organization is San Juan Rio Relief (www.sanjuanriorelief.org), and is also a US-registered 501(c)(3) non-profit.

There are many ways to help in Nicaragua, and I am happy to see interest from people on this site.

Donations to the NIC

Hi, I am interested in helping out too. I am trying to bring baseball equipment into the country to donate to a school. Mailing/ups/fedex is VERY expensive. Has anyone tried to bring such gear on a plane in as excess baggage? How does customs view this?

GHopper

We have done it...

We brought in baseball equipment two years ago as part of our 'allowed baggage'. This was a large group and we were waived though customs with no problems.

Glenn

I apreciate your comment and your feelings. See if you can find organizations and individuals willing to help the people of Nicaragua directly and I will endeavor to coordinate things down here with the help of a few friends.

Bob ...

You can write my name up, I do anything to help the people down there. Just let me know when and where. Roger

Lets talk when we meet later this week.

Many people abroad would like to help. They just dont know how. Of course we here can personally donate but organizing and managing help from all of us here could bring in alot more. You know many companies in the U.S. depreciate equipment and then give it away. Why not have them give it where it will do alot of good here?

It's done in Canada

Many corporations, mid and small business in Canada. I can definitely speak for Toronto, The Largest City in Canada, around 1.5 in the City and altogether Five million in the municipalities contribute to all Ethnic Society's. We are quite unique as we have representation from all over the Globe. Lots of People here help the people back Home. I will speak to Nicoya next time I see him(N.L.Member from Estelli-Lives in Toronto) find out how many Nicas live here. Every now and again my office bundles off Computers, old Tech Stuff, mostly to Africa. The "Means of Transportation is always the key. I hate to say it...Logistics. What does Canada do for Nicaragua anyway?

One way to transport

As I mentioned I dont know about other consulates, but the one in San Francisco regularly sends a container full of donations to Nicaragua. You can specify where you want the donation to go ie. a particular school or organization. Now, I am retired and in my second life I want to do what I can. Cant do it all by myself but I do have friends that can help down here. Canta no LLores

Roger

Let me try to bring this consignment of 8 computers plus routers, hubs, and other equipment in first and see if it goes where I want it to go then I will hit you up for a donation my friend.

have to hit me up Bob, I bring it to you. Good Luck and thanks for the tips, I also have some my friend, networking this connections is the salvation when in trouble. Thanks again.

Thats a good Idea

Please let us know the Story, I am sure it will have a happy ending, The Journey would be good to hear about and useful to know.

Dirtbag

I will be posting on the process of course. Its a learning experience like anything else here. You have already contributed and I thank you for everything that you have said and done.

Thanks for the compliment

You raised and made me think of a question regarding all the Gringo's inside Nicaragua. Why don't you form an association of sorts, a Round Table of Individuals comprising initially, of the folks known to each other by this site. The "Outsiders" could do the same. We would All have to meet eventually one stormy night in Nicaragua of course, it could be done. I personally know absolutely nothing about Technology, however, I could help promote such a scheme. There has to be a bottom line and Transportation, in my opinion, is the key. Otherwise it's just Money, which is O.K. but doesn't have legs. Does anyone know of a Shipping process, Freight Broker, Trucker etc in Nicaragua.?

Yes

I have already been talking with others here about starting some kind of association. Personally I do not have the background to promote this thing. I do have the technology background though. I also dont think money is the answer here in Nicaragua. Roger has experience in the shipping process, freight Broker and the etc. here
