CatalanSubmitted by Huehuete Bob on 28 January, 2007 - 13:22.
![]() This is a picture of my friend Catalan (in green) Who died this morning of an embolism after diving too deep for too long the day before. There will be a wake in Casares this afternoon from 3 pm till 5 pm. I expect the whole town will be there as he was a very popular fisherman there. ( categories: )

Yes it is a sad day here in Casares. Many people are mourning the loss of Catalan, and in fact the wake will go on all night. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and to you my friend, Bob.
Catalan, my friend
I just got back from Casares to see his body. Turns out he was diving in about 90 feet of water when the compresser operator tried to add gasoline to the tank which was running low. It was a windy day and some of the gas got blown into the compressor intake....so he was breathing gas fumes. He dropped his weight belt and shot to the surface. It took an hour before he was on the beach and then didnt want to see the doctor. Two hours later he had extreme back pain, headache and throwing up. He passed out 4 times as they tried to rush him to the hospital in Jinotepe only for the doctors to direct him to Managua where there was a decompression machine. He never made it.

My Thoughts
and deep felt sympathy go to all who will mourn this beautiful young man. What a profound loss for this man's family, so young, my sons are his age, I can't even imagine.
Photos
I was lucky enough to have taken 3 photos of him the week before he died. Just made some 8x10's which I will give to his widow tomorrow. I am going to try and help his family get started with some income too. To start with when I get the boat back they can use it exclusively to catch fish. Ezgringa in Casares has been very thoughtful in this situation. Thanks all of you for your kind thoughts.
