Volcano Masaya, Santiago from spaceSubmitted by NYnorm on 24 January, 2007 - 06:28.
![]() Space Shuttle Endeavour image, taken during Hubble Space Telescope repair. 1993 Nicaraguans commonly call this volcano El Santiago. But in actually it is the Volcano Masaya. Santiago is one of the three main cones of the Volcano Masaya: Masaya, Nindiri and Santiago. The Santiago cone was formed in 1850-1853. Masaya is the most active volcano in the region. The Masaya Volcano was first described in 1524 by the Spanish Conquistadors. Masaya has erupted at least 19 times since then. From 1965 to 1979 the volcano contained an active lava lake. long-term vigorous gas emission occur at roughly every 25years causing health hazards and crop damage. The most recent eruptions that caused damage were in 1993 and April, 23 2001. “Spatter and scoria deposits indicate fire fountaining at Masaya, the only know occurrence of this type of eruption in Central America (Williams, 1981)” The Masaya volcano has explosive eruptions. It is considered that an eruption in 4550 B.C. was one of the largest on Earth in the last 10,000 years. LINKS; El Santiago, also List of Eruptions ........d8^) ( categories: )

Beautiful pic,
NYN! Thanks for posting it.
I see so much info!
Hows life on the Babble-Side or is it the Far-Side!
Thank You I'm glad one of my NL compas has enjoyed it.
You know the saying when you aren't looking for some thing you find it! Well I think that goes 100X for computer search engines.
In my research on Nicaraguan trains I read about 500 web-pages with info about Nicaragua, out-of-which only one may even mention a train. (some will say: "two blocks from the train station Lana fell off her bicycle.")"Good-Grief"
I have read a lot of this info to glean any possible RR-tidbit, I had only kept the info as bookmarks, because it wasn't train related.
So now after losing my hard-drive ("Good-Grief") I realize it would be fun to pass-it-on (before it disappears), but these tangents take me a-lot of time, (I have the habit of rewriting at least 5X and verifying with at least 2to3 sources.) ....d8^(...Back-up...Back-up...!!!
