Somewhere in Alfredo Lazo

One of my neighbor kids ran off with my digital camera. This is one of the photos I found. Certainly a nearby neighbor but I don't know who these people are. I am guessing the "painting" is a typical approach to dealing with no money but wanting something on the wall.

FYL, will you publish some more of the photos that the kid took with your camera?

That one has a certain quality.

Maybe you could get a cheap digital camera and let different kids use it to try and take photos on things that interest them.

That's what I do

The camera certainly isn't cheap ($400) but it is very long in the tooth right now. I just got a new one so I am less scared a kid will drop it.

In any case, there are other photos out here taken by kids (the grandma one, for example). Expect more--a "kid playing with a camera" can turn up photos that "someone coming in to take photos" cannot.

Yes, I saw the "grandma" one when you posted it, it was pretty good.

I think that probably when you take photos of someone you probably ask their permission, or it is much more obvious being an adult and what you are doing, so the photos of people tend to be kinda posed while a kid is more unubtrusive and just shoots whatever they want and the people don't try and pose as much and so act more natural.

Also kids usually have a certain freedom about what they see as opposed to most adults who will usually have some preconcieved ideas about what a photo or any person in it should look like (both: any adults in the photo in front of the lens and any adult behind the lens too). The freedom expressed in children's art vs most adult art is a good example. Children turn out creativity and express it freely by the ton usually without really trying while it is a much harder process for the average adult.

Be careful....

Here in US because the laws and the experience in abuse against childs , is uncomom , to get in touch with kids ,either shooting photos or talking , the first rule to the childs is "DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS" ,but in our countries is a lack of care with our childs , the same in almost all countries of third world , is for this reason that the pedofilia tourism is growing , so my advice is the same myself keep here ...keep your distance from childs you don't know and without the presence of their parents. For foreigners is the best advice , avoid situations of possible trouble.

I believe community addresses this

Check out http://www.nicaliving.com/node/view/270 for a decent discussion of this. I feel Nicoya has made a good point of distinguising between the U.S. and local perceptions.

People living here and certainly people living in rural communities in the U.S. are a lot more community oriented. For example, I regularly run into people who know me because the uncle of the daughter of my neighbor ... People here know who you are, what you do, ... This doesn't mean that some friend, relative or neighbor isn't molesting a kid but, if they are, it will be known.

I think you will find that "pedofilia tourism" is much more of an industry than just "a happening". It is all too common in Costa Rica and I have had two people tell me (with unknown authority) that it exists in Granada.
