He's off to a good startSubmitted by Former NL Member on 10 January, 2007 - 07:14.
Ortega seems to have "taken" the Olof Palme as his presidential palace without permission. Is this how he's going to run Nicaragua? ( categories: )

WHY STOP!
Today Ortega anounced Reform to the Constitution.
"Presidential Re-election" the begining of the end ;)
Transcript
Ok, so I
don't speak or read Spanish. What does it mean? I'm taking a wild guess and saying that he changed it so he can be re elected. For how long? Can he just be in forever?
He hasn't changed anything
This is something that will be brought up at The National Assembly.
Ortega basically says that he wants the opportunity to be reelected.
In other articles later, it is being related to the idea that you can't make major changes to a country in the shape Nicaragua is in without more time.
As of now the ALN, PLC, and MRS oppose this. They feel that because the country is in such poor shape, someone can come in easily and become an Authoritarian and rule indefinitely.
Ahhh
thank you.
ut oh..... NOT AGAIN "LA PRENSA"
I Hope Ortega doesn't censor again! NOT A GOOD START. ">CHAVEZ speaks his mind about LA PRENSA
"Chávez ataca a LA PRENSA
He can dish it out
but can't take it.
A response from the Editor
Take note:
"...la verdad es que nos sentimos honrados y orgullosos de ser también agredidos verbalmente por el intolerante caudillo populista de Venezuela."
...the truth is that we feal honored and proud that we have also (refering to the television chanels in Venezuela that have lost their licenses) been attacked verbally by the intolerant populist leader of Venezuela.
"Los ataques del presidente Hugo Chávez nos honran, pues significan que estamos cumpliendo con nuestro deber de defender los valores de la libertad, la democracia y los derechos humanos, lo mismo que el principio de la primacía del individuo sobre el Estado y de la dignidad humana sobre la voluntad despótica de caudillos populistas, autoritarios y militaristas. Apenados nos sentiríamos si personas como Chávez nos elogiaran en vez de atacarnos"
We are honored by the attacks of the President Hugo Chavez, this signifies that we are defending our values of liberty, the democracy and the human rights, as well as the the principles of the supremacy of the individual on the state and of the human dignity on the despotic will of Populist leaders, Authoritarians, and Militarists. We would feel sorry if people like Chávez praised us instead of attacked us.

This may be why I enjoy reading La Prensa.
Thanks for the translations, Josh!
I like the format, keep up the good work. Those of us who are Spanish-impaired thank you!
Another good editorial today
in La Prensa. Titled: Dictadores disfrazados Disguised Dictators
I will have to get around to translating it.
Excellent response
La Prensa has cojones.
an even better start
meetings with the real devil
and of course this article is funny Can you say Dictator?
Now that's
just plain scary!!!
Roll out the red carpet.
I am sure Ortega has his White carpet being stained in the RED BLOOD of the Nicaraguan people.
according to the story, they called the mayor . . .
Marenco, and asked him if indeed "the State is one" why does he have his city workers remodeling the Olaf Palme, not just cleaning it as he said the day before?
The Mayor hung up the phone at that point . . .
The reporter calls back and says "What's bothering you Mayor?"
Marenco says basically "Nothing, just that I explain something to you and you say the opposite thing."
I guess it is because he changed his story? hehehe
-------
What I think is really cool is that the reporter just calls the Mayor and he answers his phone. Reminds me of the first time I was in Managua, got lost on the way in from Rivas, saw some buildings, stopped and asked directions from the security guard at the parking lot, and later realized I had driven right up to where the Asembelea meets, rolled in the official parking lot and had a nice chat with the guy in charge of the security of the Capital . . . try that in D.C.!
Doors of hope fly open when doors of promise shut. -Thomas D'Arcy McGee
C'mon John,
I don't see this as wrong, do you? Alot of presidents do things without permission...
I see your point...
Unfortunately, that doesn't make this particular act ok. As Nicaragua's president, he's pretty much allowed to legally do any of that stuff (Bolaños and Alemán, for instance, took similar actions). That, however, is not the issue. The issue is that the man's logic's flawed: by spending approximately $9 million dollars in remodeling the Olof Palme, he's expecting to save the country money due to reduced Current presidential palace upkeep. They should publish how much is currently being spent on upkeep (they won't do this for a reason) so as to prove their point. Those funds, furthermore, are badly needed in other cash-starved but potentially cash-generating locations (Ports in the Atlantic Coast). By allowing companies to bid on these, rather than letting Bayardo Arce and company get the jobs, they could stretch funds out even further. Nicaragua needs to focus on micro-credit and infrastructure, not building new presidential facilities... Although I don't believe Ortega's doing something "bad" (for once), I do think it's something illogical and borderline stupid. Nicho's on the same footing: his blatant ignorance was noted when he hung up on the reporter..
Noted-
I was honesly being sarcastic. As far as I'm concerned, vulgar displays of power are unacceptable. It sounds to me more like he saw something he liked and decided he wanted it.
I can't say I wouldn't react in a similar manner given that kind of power but I don't think we'll ever know...
I noted your sarcasm, Mr.
I noted your sarcasm, Mr. Ant :P but wanted to state my point... Your point's well taken.
Seems to me
Ortega could sell a Mercedes or two and buy a house that's more like the type belonging to the people he claims to represent. That would actually make me respect him. A little bit.
you would respect a president living in a 1 room home?
you live in a dream world.
Everything you say on NL indicates that you like power and money and prestige.
Tell the truth, John, if Ortega does ANYTHING except die, you will rip him a new one. When he dies you will bitch about the funeral expenses. Not that one Floridian cent of your taxes is involved in any way at all.
Tony
Tony-
I honestly do like power, money and prestige and wish I had alot more of all three.
You have to understand that Ortega has proven in the past what kind of man he is. Until he proves differently this is how he will be viewed by all that know his past.
From some of his very recent meetings I'm not sure anything will be proven....
Once again
I simply cannot fathom why those customs and immigration folks treat you so bad. You're such a kind and gentle soul.
Expert
Tony I realize your expertise on Nicaragua is superior to any other. I am glad you found a place in Nicaragua & applaud you. I am guessing that during your quest to become an expert on Nicaragua you neglected to talk to anyone that was kidnapped to join the army, had to flee their country to ensure their families safety, had family lands stolen, were jailed, shot, or lost a loved one at the hands of Danny Boy. By chance, if you are interested in hearing from any of the above you can find at least one of each here on NL. Capitolist (any kind of business owner) like yourself did not fare so well during Danny Boy's time in power.
Sandanistas & Danielistas are 2 very different things.
no expat ever becomes an expert on nicaragua
and I am certainly not one, but gracias for the compliment.
When a rico gringo knows 100 people in town, he may like to ask his cleaning lady how many SHE knows and how long she has known them. Almost certainly a humbling experience. Gringos cannot even begin to comprehend the complexities of life here except at the bull in a china shop level. Insult a street vendor and your residency papers get delayed - THAT kind of complexity.
Wasn't all that stuff about conscription, death, and confiscation something to do with a certain country funding an insurection? Perhaps "Danny boy" would have reacted a little better to some foreign aid and respect rather than a hot poker in the eye.
Nicaragua would be a better place indeed if the US had honored their loss in the World Court and paid compensation for the damage they did. Its not too late, talk to your congressman.
The US kicked a dog and got bit on the foot. Go figure.
History 1. The other day, I kicked a dog and I leaned my lesson quick when it bit me on the foot.
History 2. My internet service Cosmonet tells me I need to find a new provider. No reason, no explication, the bill is paid, the contract is good, other places use Cosmonet without issue. Somewhere, a wheel went around inside another wheel. Perhaps it was the dogs owner.
Or perhaps
Cosmonet have been reading some of your staff on NL.

Foreign Aid
Danny Boy had plenty, Cuba & Russia were lots of help, though they could not supply toilet paper or toothpaste they were more than willing to supply military wares to fight the evil empire. Not sure how the USA provoked Danny Boy to kill thousands of Miskitos (people, not insects), but I am sure you will let us know.
A man your age should know better than to kick dogs, unless willing to deal with the outcome.
Perhaps Cosmonet has decided to provide their services only to "Real Nicaraguans" & does not want any of that nasty gringo $$$ (although I seriously doubt that). You are right about kicking a dog, you will get bit, you have shown that by example (bit by the dog & now Cosmonet). Like I said, you should know better than to be kicking dogs.
OR
Maybe he could steal another house from Jaime. Jaime doesn't seem too upset about the last one Ortega Stole from him.
Respect
Very little.
