Heh - the memories!

My family used to go to Jiloá all the time when we kids were growing up. It was VERY family friendly - a refreshment stand, chairs and umbrellas available, etc. The only part I didn't ever like was the nasty, squishy mud that you had to walk through to get to deeper water. Just as soon as you could, you'd just float so as to not have to stand in the gunk. We had a lot of fun, though :-). There was an urban legend that if you got too far out swimming, there was a whirlpool that would just suck you down! Needless to say, we didn't get too far from shore!

I remember when I was little we used to go there....it was private / and semi-private. Then i don't know what hapen with it. even in 1993 was still working, that was my last vicit to this lovely place, we stoped going couse the local used to say it was dangerous to go there couse you get mug. I don't know what is happening now there, but it will be nice if it can be in use again....but....NOT in a private way.

almost every year since 1991. SInce we were staying in Managua near Bello Horizonte, it was the place to go to cool off during the hot part of the day. It didn't take long to get there and was deserted on the weekdays. Weekends were more crowded and it was hard to get one of the covered patios to put up our hammock.

We had one experience in 1995 where three of the military jids from the facility next door came by for a swim. They got down to their underwear and started swimming real close to my wife and her sisters. Guess they were trying to be friendly. My brother-in-law noticed that one of them had a gun on him while he was undressing so we didn't want to make a scene with them so we just left. It was really no big deal.

However, after Hurricaine Mitch, the landscape of Xiloa changed and it was not as pristine as before. There was a lot of beach erosion (for loss of a better term. About the year 2000 Xiloa became a dangerous place for tourists to hang out at especially on the weekends. I can remember going there one Saturday and it was crowded with local thugs that were eyeing me like never before as we were driving around looking for parking. I noticed that some were following on bike from a distance. It looked as if Xiloa was transplanted to South Central Los Angeles.

From that day on, we made our new swimming hole at Laguna De Appoyo. A longer drive, but well worth it. Very beautiful and clear water.

Where exactly is it? relative to Managua. Is that the ruins of a building at the foot of the photograph? Can you comment on the area.It looks like a place worth visiting.

that sticks out into Lake Managua (NW of Managua)...near some kind of military installation. It has a nice infrastructure surroundng it (see my other picture) and we saw only local families using it on a Sunday afternoon.

Where we were, there was no charge, but it looked like there was also another entrance nearby that was either pay to use or else it was for military families.
