Dam at La Maquina

La Maquina is a restaurant/museum/campground/tree preserve built around the machinery of an old sugar factory.

See ya soon Bobby!!!

It wasn't sugar!

The entire area/farms around "The Machine" used to raise cotton. This was the first place they had cotton gins. That's why they call it La Maquina. Put alot of people out of work but probably saved alot of fingers. Cotton is no longer grown in the region. Mostly watermelon and tomatoes for export. Above the damn and accross the creek is an ampa theatre. The couple from Brazil who own the place have planted over 20,000 trees. They've been there almost 20 years. All of the trees have placques that identify them. The "pond" behind the damn is only 3 feet deep. The pools and waterfalls through the rocks are great to play in and the cool water massage you get is spectacular. Best to visit during the week. On the weekends they bus school kids out and the place is a madhouse. It's 80 cords for a taxi from Jinotepe to La M and you can catch a bus back every hour on the road in front of LM.
