San Juan River 1900

This is a fascinating photograph of Nica History, I love the lamppost and wonder was it Kerosene? what I really was interested in if anyone knows. The Guardhut and people are on an old ruin of what must have been a Fort. Who built it? and when? what? was it originally used for.

Details

Unfortunately, I do not have any details on the image. This is a digital photo of half of an old stereo card. Years ago someone had affixed something on the reverse of the card, covering up any background information - if there was any there. The front of the card is damaged, too, and the locale "San Juan River" is all I could make out from the old card itself. I changed it from B&W to sepia for the post since the contrast seems to look a little better. I did the same for all the cards I have, and they were all uploaded here on the site. I have not yet found glass slides of these stereo or lantern images relating to Nicaragua, which I would like to do. From glass, the quality is so good and the slide so big, that it lends itself to reproduction and enlargement, something my damaged, warped old paper cards wont allow. In an old stereo card catalog I found reference to three images from this area of the river, but I have never found all the other cards, and cannot comment on what the subject matter is for the other cards.

El Castillo

It looks like El Castillo. A fort built by the Spaniards in an attempt to keep the British out of Granada (didn't work too well). Great place to visit. The musuem in the fort is well worth the effort to get there. The nearby town is also a nice place to visit.
