William Walker Trujillo 1

A snapshot of Walker's "spot". He is buried in the Old Cemetery, above city proper Trujillo, Honduras. The cemetery is not exactly well kept. Most all of the outer wall fell down decades ago. The oversized gated arch looks kind of iffy. Part of the large hinged metal gate is best left untouched, because the hinge is no longer connected to the wall. A rusty chain and padlock keep the barred doors closed. The ancient padlock has not worked since the early 1990's and might not be there any more (if it looks locked, just pull on it, and it opens; the locals will tell you the same). There hasn't been a gardener there since the 1980's, maybe earlier. I am not sure if Walker's grave was initially unmarked. At some point someone tried to chisel his name on the top surface. Not very artistic, and they slipped while making the two "l's" in William so there is simple a hole there where "ll" should be. Apparently, someone later decided this wasn't fitting for man who was once President of Nicaragua. So, they had a plaque made. They chose not to copy the chiseled spelling rumored to have been left by some drunk tourist, a history buff and fan of Walker's many accomplishments. Instead they used that from some graffiti on another wall, using an "n" not "m". So, the plaque reads "Willian Walker, fusilado".
