Global Warming & Central America

Submitted by zenpilgrim on 15 November, 2006 - 19:22.

Since one of our other threads had moved into a discussion around global warming, I figured I'd start a thread on it and have it serve as a home for any discussion on it.

In April, 2006, a report was issued by the National Academy of Science. The lead author was J. David Neelin, of UCLA's Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics. In the report, they predict a significant decrease in tropical rainfall and an increase in the summer drying.

"Neelin says the areas most likely to experience the summer drying trend are Cuba, Jamaica and Haiti, Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras."

Global Warming Means Drier Summers for Caribbean, Central America

Global warming could dry Caribbean, Central America

NASA - Parts of the Caribbean and Central America are likely to experience a significant summer drying trend by the middle of this century

paglia on global warming

i thought we were

i thought we were supposed to have more hurricanes, not less? http://www.coaps.fsu.edu/~maue/tropical/

tropical storms

While the USA was fortunate to not have had any real hurricanes this year, and very few tropical storm landings (much to the dismay of the people in the deep south with the ever shrinking water table), this was a high year for tropical storms in the Gulf/Atlantic area. The average number of named tropical storms is 10 per year. So far there have been 14 in 2007.

Now the FSU guy tries to downplay the increase in the number of storms by saying that their intregrated intensity is lower than predicted. He may be right, but then again, his theory may not be worth anything either. I also wonder what would happen if he included both hemispheres in his review of the data.

When you look at his chart for "Northern Hemisphere Tropical Cyclone Days" and "Northern Hemisphere Hurricane Days" you will see that 2007 is lower any year since 1977, but even when you take into account both the low years (1977 and 2007) you still have an upward trend on both charts. And even his beloved "Northern Hemisphere Accumulated Cyclone Energy" shows a slight upward trend (but he just wants to refer a single year, 2007, to the mean and media to make his point).

Does any of this prove or disprove global warming? No, But it does show that you can make an arguement either way with the same data and statistics. I also have to wonder about a guy who wants to make an arguement about a global, long term issue and only presents data on one hemisphere and only going back to 1968.

if you read this, please let me know. someone with credentials about weather, Weather Channel Founder: Global Warming

http://icecap.us/index.php/go/joes-blog/comments_about_global_warming/

that guy is an a**hat who

that guy is an a**hat who knows nothing about science, he's been a weather man since 1953 and the basis of his anti-global climate change position is that he's read some reports.

the weather channel is very well positioned as a believer in GCC, this person founded it and ran it for about a year. I wouldn't believe everything you read on drudge report . . .

Doors of hope fly open when doors of promise shut. -Thomas D'Arcy McGee

so dissenters must be personally attacked?

he has a degree? he's studied the weather as a weather man for 50 years? where does the vitriol come from? anyone that points out that it hasn't been scientifically proven must be destroyed? the warmest year on record was 1934. 1970 newsweek said global cooling will doom us all. i thought dissent was the highest form of patriotism?

of COURSE they must be attacked.

Kill the messenger - its the modern way. Jesus was a dissenter and was killed. I claim historical precedent!

Crumbs, look what happened when everyone was supportive - we got George Karl Dick and Iraq.

Dissent and attack - long live democracy and debate.

... and where did you get that 1934 hottest year 'fact'?

USA temperature versus global temperature trends

What is often overlooked is the temperature adjustments only applied to temperatures in 48 U.S. states. As the USA comprises only 2% of the globe, this has had infinitesimal effect on global trends. [...] Before the error was discovered, the trend was 0.185°C/decade. After corrections were made, the trend was still 0.185°C/decade. The change to the global mean was less than one thousandth of a degree.
But then, since the US is the most important country in the entire world, guess it was an honest error. I'll let you win your point - 1934 was the hottest year on record in the lower 48. :-)

thanks

for the laugh, "of course they must be attacked." i got the 1934 date from a piece on nasa's dr hanson. he had to restate his numbers. he had asserted that 1998 was the warmest. another scientist pointed that nasa was wrong. it may be one of the pieces that i posted on this very page.

1934 lower 48

Jim, I just want to be absolutely sure on this one. You DO understand that 1938 hottest was ONLY the lower 48.

Your reply did not address the issue and it would be easy to assume you still think 1938 was the hottest in the world, which it was not.

Ambiguity and I are not good friends.

understood your point

cared more that nasa dr hanson was wrong, had to restate the warmest year on record, and that he had taken money from the agenda driven george soros.

who pays the piper?

allegiance to our funders is one of those fine lines in life. Would our funders pay if they thought we could not be influenced? But would we accept funds if we thought we were being channeled?

When I opened the tourist office, I considered asking INTUR for funding. For about .35 of a second. It has been harder without backup, continuity, guidance, classes, information, influence in upper circles. Now that I know what I want to do and whats doable, I can talk to INTUR on a more even footing and it becomes a negotiation, not manipulation and overweening bureaucracy.

I kinda feel some sympathy towards researchers like Hanson; the money they get offered is not always pristine and even the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is probably in someones list of 'contaminated sources'.

In a ghoulish way, and knowing it will inevitably happen, I want the Greenland ice sheet to slide off in my lifetime. Last time anything even close happened on this Earth, there were less than a million people on the planet. I want to Witness! (from the safety of a mountain, I might add)

OK , make that bottles..

something I can reload ;)

I read his blog and agree that most of the changes that are happening most likely have a non-human caused source, but our activities are making it worse.

At this point even a single event like the melting of the icecap on Greenland and all the other evidence tossed out, still leaves us with at least 20 foot higher sea level.

Kind of bad for people that live close to it.

Then there is Antarctica.

To be honest with you I doubt even the most all out effort would make much difference now.

Like the parable of the fishermen caught at sea with a storm growing, they prayed for help but had the wisdow to row toward shore.

-Doug, gullible, even voted for Reagan once;)

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate

plenty of ice for beer

why melting? the ice sheets are growing in other areas. the warmest year on record was 1934. not 1998. dr hansen fudged the numbers, got caught and had to restate the numbers. follow the money. george soros paid him.

i work for gov't. there are 2 modes of gov't, complacency and crisis. the only way to get the bill payers to agree to pay more taxes is to convince them there is a crisis that needs to be solved. until there is scientific certainty, john coleman is right. there will be plenty of ice for those beers.

you know most of the fudging occured during the go go, enron 90's of fudging the numbers. same time news stories said lying is ok to buttress bill clinton's dalliances.

panic and complacency

The Texas system where the legislature sits only 6 months every 2 years does have its attractions. Always wondered why there were lines on the US map, it's not like the DNA is different in North Carolina to Texas, is it? Perhaps Texas ledge should sit for 5 minutes every 2 years "I propose a bill that all laws in North Carolina apply to Texas. All in favor? (Chorus of "Aye"s), The ayes have it. See you at the bar".

Imagine the time, effort, money that could be avoided or saved. All the Texas lobbyists would be unemployed. No printing presses to run off copies of doomed legislation. Austin-American Statesman reporters calling in stories about dog-catchers. Well, OK, maybe South Carolina or Nebraska or Kentucky instead of NC.

I believe there is room for MUCH more complacency in the US state system. Much less action, much less stress. Why the hell does my truck have to be re-registered and I need a new drivers license just 'cause I move from New Mexico?

Reduced taxes? OMG YES taxes would be reduced! Want a residents permit in Nicaragua? Only one police office issues international reports in the whole US - South Dakota. Live in Ohio and want a new Drivers licence by mail? Send it to Arizona for processing.

Yes, Jim, complacency and reduced taxes. Jim for president!

Hey, someone turn down the thermostat, its getting warm in here.

i am sure

i did a poor job of making my point. the global warming effort is attempt to shake down, er um redistribute wealth. the only reason the shills, er um taxpayers are going to part with their money is if the snake oil salesman, er um the goricle poses a problem that only big gob't can fix.

er, um in this analogy, al goricle will play the part of the evil blue sky mining company. a great metaphor bc of his private plane and 20,000 square foot carbon imprint house. the little guy will be playing the part of the middle class taxpayer expected to be broken by big gob't. song used for political parody and i didn't write it.

Hey, hey-hey hey Therell be food on the table tonight Hey, hey, hey hey Therell be pay in your pocket tonight

My gut is wrenched out it is crunched up and broken A life that is led is no more than a token Wholl strike the flint upon the stone and tell me why If I yell out at night theres a reply of bruised silence The screen is no comfort I cant speak my sentence They blew the lights at heavens gate and I dont know why

But if I work all day at the blue sky mine (therell be food on the table tonight) Still I walk up and down on the blue sky mine (therell be pay in your pocket tonight)

The candy store paupers lie to the share holders Theyre crossing their fingers they pay the truth makers The balance sheet is breaking up the sky So Im caught at the junction still waiting for medicine The sweat of my brow keeps on feeding the engine Hope the crumbs in my pocket can keep me for another night And if the blue sky mining company wont come to my rescue If the sugar refining company wont save me Whos gonna save me?

But if I work all day...

And some have sailed from a distant shore And the company takes what the company wants And nothings as precious, as a hole in the ground

Whos gonna save me? I pray that sense and reason brings us in Whos gonna save me? Weve got nothing to fear

In the end the rain comes down Washes clean, the streets of a blue sky town

tall b same in 100 years

Mom used to say 'it'll all be the same in a hundred years' and I didn't understand her. She also said 'We'll all be dead in a hundred years'.

The world will grow accustomed to the absence of Florida and much of Texas. Will forget Tahiti, Indonesia, Bangla Desh. The corpses will be long gone, rotted down. Memories of being unable to sail from Canada to Siberia will be tales from National Geographic. Polar Bears will be on Animal Planet and in the zoos. Human life will unquestionably continue in new situations and configurations.

1934? 1984? who cares?

Landowners n Siberia and Alaska will laugh. Real Estate agents in New Mexico will cry. Arabs in Saudi Arabia will say "so what, its always been hoter'n hell here". Your kinfolks and descendants will have long squandered or invested your tax savings. Stories will be written about "The great Climate Change"

And it'll all be the same in a hundred years.

where do

you get 2 houses? my nica lot has no house.

Re: Jims point. I don't care about Mars. Sorry, just dont.

Maybe its the way mom brought me up but when someone asks me to comment on a film, I tend to comment on the film and only use outside objects for comparison. If Mars gets warm, I don't care, the presenter didn't mention it and its not relevant.

One serious flaw at exactly 8:00 minutes is "Eliminate". Let us be very clear, there is absolutely no way that action, money, or decisions in 200X will "eliminate" GCC or even the effects of global warming. The time for that type of decision was 1945 or shortly after. Going green on fuels back then might have put us in the lower left box. Maybe.

Similarly, I literally do not care who caused GCC, deity, man, car drivers, volcanoes - it is not important. The trigger has been pulled and the bullet is in flight. Discussion of the gun make and model will not buy us a hill of beans. This genie isn't going back to its bottle.

Jim owns 2 houses, both within (I am guessing) 30 ft of MSL. Maybe he'll be lucky and the oceans only rise 20ft. But he'd better forget about driving to Houston, Galveston, New Orleans, they will all be gone. That is one hell of a gamble, Jim. 100% of your properties at risk. I wish your children and family the best; shame you didn't buy in Matagalpa.

But on the bright side, the presenter did not address WHEN. All this will be our children's and grand children's problems so, to take a line related to National Debt and the Republican Party, who gives a hoot? Not My Problem.

So, for completely different reasons, I agree with Jim, my money stays in my pocket.

i feel

pretty lucky. his argument is constructed around feelings. very forceful. how would you feel about the millions who died from a global depression? the argument is void of facts.

mars poles are melting and our greenhouse gases aren't getting up there. in fact i thought is was warmer 1000 - 1400 ad in the geological record. newsweek proclaimed in 1970 that global cooling was here and we needed to do something to stop the next ice age. the warmest year on record was 1934. hanson, who got money from george soros, was wrong. it wasn't 1998. let's wait for some heat. we had one of the coolest summers on record here in texas. not one day over 100. that doesn't get news. while the poles are often pointed to, the same poles are gaining ice in other areas. never pointed to.

i like logic, but he leaves out the factors that lead me to believe, without scientific evidence to the contrary, that it is not time to act. i am keeping my freedom. and i'll take that beer.

No one knows

Al Gores movie states the research from the ice caps only goes back so far in history I think it was 600,000 yrs. Mr. Gores conclusions where drawn from Carbon Dioxide cycle being out of wack. I think he did a good job of showing us all change is coming. Alot of other thing where not said. I just looked in googles encyclopedia for supporting argument. It says the southern ice sheet covering the south pole only certain parts are 5- 15 million years old most of it is only 3 million years old. The expansion and contraction cyle has repeated itself 26 times in the last few million years. This being said what and why did they melt before, I don't think it was because of industrialism or tail pipes.

Some facts are being ignored in the passing of fear.

#1 The air heats up the volumn of the atmosphere expands like a sponge it will absorb water.

#2 If the surface area of the ocean expands so does the area that can be turned from liquid to gas, evaporation. So more water will be airborn faster than before. It will balance itself depending on the temperature.

#3 Gravity and the setting sun. Will join forces in cooling the air to form water droplets, gravity will pull these rain drops down to the surface again.

#4 some of this rain will fall on the land parts of our planet, bringing with it the ability to promote more life. Some of this rain will get trapped in lakes and valleys all over the world Instead of returning directly to the ocean offsetting a rising sea level. (The insurance comanies who sell flood and fire insurance will be the first extinctions.)

No one really knows the effects except storms will carry more rain being heavier they can travel further north faster. However the resistance of a thicker atmosphere will slow them down but then if the atmospher expands enough the air will be thinner then they be able to move faster still. Another balance question.

Mix this with the dry cold storms from the north or south poles and what would that be like. Something builds glaciers we still don't understand even that. We live in a time that glaciers are dying how they formed I think is question we will learn answers to before its all over.

The analogy of examining the gun when the bullet is traveling is good, its too late, build a better house, a little higher, make sure it has a good roof with an escape hatch and keep a camera handy I think we are going to see some very interesting phenomina that will seem normal to future generations.

Some change is good some is isn't.

Every atmosheric model I have read and studied ignores the atmoshere being able to hold more water and the ability of the inland seas being able to store it. I don't fear rising sea levels its the storm surges that will get you. The sea level well thats a relationship of atmosheric pressure and temperature as i have said before Death valley can store a tremendous amount of water toss in the baltic sea, the Black sea the Dead sea and the Great salt lake just to name a few that s alot of water. Buy a hill top somewhere in one of these dead seas and your greatgrand kids will thank you for buying them such a beautiful island.

thanks

Jim, thanks for keeping this thread alive after a whole year

you are very kind....

i believe the world may be in a warming phase, much like 1000 ad to 1400 ad. don't know if i am arrogant enough to believe man is causing it. not without the evidence.

not the cause

but I think most scientists are in consensus that our impact will make it more severe that it might normally be.

i thought methane gas

from cows has more of an impact? maybe man is breeding too many cows? we didn't have 1 day over 100 degrees in my part of texas....

i was sitting on the tail gate of my pickup truck down at the general store. a big city slicker from houston came barreling down the road. he saw me and slammed on the brakes. he rolled down the window and hollered, "do you have a criminal lawyer in these parts?" i pushed my cowboy hat back, pushed the toothpick to the side of my mouth and said, "i think so, but we don't have the evidence yet!"

i dont know how science can operate by committee? either it's a proveable fact or it aint? right? or could it be a religion to bow down to? give me more of your tax dollars and i'll solve this problem for you? ted danson back in the 80's said we only had 10 more years to live....in the 70's, newsweek did a story on how man was causing global cooling.

when i posted this comment....

to the right side on nica living where it says, "a thought" this quote came up, "A Thought The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State.

— Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels"

please consider me the voice of dissent til i see the evidence. if global warming is a lie, the state would get more tax dollars for nothin and their chicks for free. dire straights, fair use doctrine blah blah blah

Join the club

Since 99% of the scientific community believes that man has accelerated this process, if not directly causing it, I'd say there is little room for skepticism.

The good news is that AT LEAST we are now beginning to think about living SUSTAINABLY, not just eat, drink, be merry, and use all the resources you can, for tomorrow we die.

why did dr hansen

take money from george soros? if global warming is a scientific issue, why are traditionalists skeptics and liberals true believers? and can you cite me the authority for your premise that 99% of the scientific community believes? and why do we care about beliefs? shouldn't we care about scientific proof? or is it bc you are liberal you feel more about things and therefore believe it? please cite me the authority for the 99% believe statement, thanks.

More liberal vs conservative crap?

The issue of importance to me here was not the percentage, but rather the fact that the global warming issue has caused many people to think about living sustainably. News flash: the whole world cannot live like we do in the US, the world does not have the resources to support it. If it takes global warming to get the world to live more sustainably, that is a good thing, especially in the big consumer societies like the US and Europe, and next China and India.

My 99% is not a quote of anything, just a perception based on all the news I have heard in the last 5 years or so on the subject. If I am wrong, so be it. I stand corrected.

I am not going to get sucked into a liberal vs. conservative debate with you, JR. I realize that you enjoy advertising that you are a conservative, and I respect your right to be so.

Every issue does not boil down to liberal vs. conservative. I am much more complicated than liberal or conservative, and I hope you are too.

Does reducing everything to black or white make it easier for people to wrap their brains around big, complicated issues?

Apparently you care about beliefs because you believe I am liberal with no scientific proof. Where is your proof that I am a liberal?

no proof...

not even a statement. it was a question, "or is it bc you are liberal you feel more about things and therefore believe it?" my dear liberal momma is after all a liberal. it is not, as she would say, "right or wrong, just different."

the paradigm will shift. when the per watt price of solar comes down. economics will drive it. not beliefs of global warming.

i most respectfully suggest that liberal vs conservative is not crap. i most respectfully ask you to have an open mind. if you have been listening to the media for the last 5 years on global warming, newsflash, its liberal: Media Bias Basics89 percent of Washington-based reporters said they voted for Bill Clinton in 1992. Only seven percent voted for George Bush, with two percent choosing Ross ... www.mediaresearch.org/biasbasics/biasbasics3.asp - 45k

i believe it is a matter of simplicity vs independence. the authoritarians want to take our liberty, by taking more control of our lives. taking more control of our lives by taxing more. we have global warming without any proof man is responsible. in 1970 newsweek magazine's coverstory was global cooling. but, now the dems are proposing a carbon tax. algore wants to limit debate on the issue. taking more control by taking freedoms. aren't the block watchers in nica now tied into the police dept? don't know if you are liberal, but that is easy. being liberal is easy. let the gov't pay for my healthcare, so i don't have to. oh, i have to wait in this line for surgery? "A republic if you can keep it" responded Franklin.

2 judges

2 judges, both rabidly republican, both buying their own health insurance, both fit. One got cancer was treated and declared to be clean. But his health carrier declined his business next time around and nobody else would touch his preexisting condition. He was diagnosed with a heart issue, needed surgery and went bankrupt, sold the house and car in the process. The other judge drives his Porsche past the apartment on the way to his farm where he races his horses.

And thats how free enterprise works - insurance companies are in business to make money by insuring healthy people.

Perhaps, Jim, the health god smiled on you; he did not smile in my direction. That does not make me bad, liberal, dregs of society, scum, commie, or socialist. Jim, it comes down to loving thy neighbor as thyself. Read it in a book somewhere, sounded catchy; meaningful; almost socialist. Maybe its on your bookshelf. Try reading it.

it is a good book

and it is socialist. but it tells me to give, not to be taken from. so if you pay taxes, that is being a christian? give to caesar, what is caesar's, and give to the lord...

jimPredictable

So predictable. Someone makes a point and you are a hundred miles away in a coal mine at the time.

I have health issues that were just luck of the draw; could have been you instead of me. Am I bad? A drain on the economy? Should I have been forced to unretire and get a job just to get the insurance? How does that work for a bricklayer who loses his arms, Jim. Or a judge with throat cancer unable to speak. Was it their fault, should society slough them off?

Tell me how that works in your white, Christian, healthy, well-educated, rich, male, Club. Just like Iran and homosexuals if one of your club goes 'bad' - ill, bankrupt, homosexual - do you expel them, ignore them, cut them off, vote them off the committees? By disowning anyone thats sick, you never have to consider there might be a valid opposing argument in favor of universal health care. Jim's OK, what else counts?

I am expecting a stupid 'answer' from you like normal. A song lyric, a discussion of taxes and caesar, a duck, a weave. "Jim George Karl and Dick are OK, we don't give a damn about you".

My regards to your wife and folks, they have a pretty sorry excuse for a judge in their family

nice idea creating a blog as a lightning rod. Bad timing, I just quit the nuke attack experiment I was conducting. The lab rats performed as expected so, for me, it was a success.

Me? Racist? I'll have to swill that one around a glass for a while. Anyone else think I'm racist?"

lab rat is how hitler treated the jews. tell me you were drinking when you said that tony.

Hey bud, its over

Unilateral peace was declared yesterday.

ok, i accept

I'll do my best, Jim

just might need a little help from you sometimes. We all need help on occasion.

yes

we do.

please open your mind...

i am not christian, but catholic. my dear liberal momma's side of the family came over from ireland as a result of the potato famine. i am part of the great unwashed. i wonder if brits still look down on the irish? my dear uncle has never been married, wrote for time magazine (the communist magazine) and has aids. i suspect he may have an alternate lifestyle, but i love the sinner hate the sin. i am part of the great unwashed - so please watch your stereotypes, someone might say your archie bunker is showing.

as for rich, i have family and friends that love me and a retirement property i look forward to retiring to. that is rich in my book. but for money, no. am a county employee. will have to work til i am 65 - 70. bc county employees don't make that much. did not go into private practice. gobernment, remember reagan, part of the problem? i had an employee that before she quit to have a family, her momma had hepatitis c. she did not have the money or insurance to get her a kidney or liver transplant. we (the community) had a fundraiser and got her 70k for the operation. she got the operation. happy givers. no gov't involvement. i think we could have one for you!

once again with the ad hominem attacks? do i have to trot out that you went to one of the charitable service organizations that i belong to and tried to assert that i wasn't who i am? do i have to look over my shoulder for a fatal attraction thing? please don't attack me personally archie, kay?

Christ and the Catholics

Jim said:
i am not christian, but Catholic
Catholics believe in Christ. Believers in Christ are called Christians. You made a mistake Jim.

if that makes you happy

so be it. you were hurling racist, sexist, religious labels in an effort to besmirch me and not argue the merits. predictable, archie. i was pointing out that i was from the great unwashed, unlike your stereotypes. instead of arguing the merits, you attacked me much in the same way as you went to a charity service organization and tried to claim it wasn't me. predictable. i am tired of the pedantic behavior and ad hominem attacks. i respectfully dissent.

Catholics are Christians

Just a couple humble comments, Jim. Catholics are Christian. Last I was in Ireland, most of them were white. Last I was in USA, most people didn't have a second microwave oven let alone a retirement home in another country. You have never mentioned your own health and have mentioned your job several times.

So if I describe you as a rich, healthy, employed, white, Christian male, thats observation, Watson, just observation.

why describe archie?

a liberal friend of mine said labels are bad. i am tired of your ad hominem attacks. predictable.

good night Jim

It's been a windy day down here, dry and very cold. I had on a T-shirt, regular shirt, sweater, and leather jacket. Must have been 63F or even colder. How will I survive this terrible winter?

5 months after ordering it, Enitel delivered Turbonett ADSL service. I almost bought the Enitel lady a watch but Veronica would have my hide.

A little concerned about Anahi. She has a cold but tonight was hyperactive and almost delirious. The lights were on very bright but there was nobody home. No temperature though; will keep an eye on her.

6 school kids come in and want a translation - like, they cant afford 5 pesos a word for professional. mmm... "Wheres the document?" says I. "Oh we have to find it on the iternet." Good grief. Eventually they find 3 pages they like but only want a slice of each one. Open ms Word, copy paste. Copy concatenated document to translate.google.com copy translated text back to ms Word, print 3 pages in Spanish followed by 3 in English. Everyone happy until the price - 58 cordobas. Blink. Fear. Then I say "and $200 for my helping you!" Laughter, smiles, happy customers.

Good night all.

good night tony...

sounds like a nice day!
