Things to take for others on a Nica TripSubmitted by dirtbag on 13 November, 2006 - 11:58.
I will be leaving for Nicaragua soon and realy looking forward to getting there. This site is absolutely unique and has been a tremendous help. Can anyone tell me what I should bring for Poor Nica's? Bearing in mind weight restrictions and that I will need at least a change of Kilts for personal use. Ihave travelled quite a bit to developing countries and usually take soap, off the shelf medication, candies, colouring books and pencils. I intend to add some clothes and caps. Anything else? Hard to get? too expensive? Thanks for your input. **** Forum Topic Opened ***** See "Humanitarian" -Needs -"Gifts Appreciated, Needed and Appropriate" |

Forum Topic Example
This is a good example of a posting that would make a good forum. Heck, it gave birth to a forum topic, "Humanitarian" (Unless someone can think of a better name). Under Humanitarian in the forum section, I've started a new forum. If you folks would post these items and comments in the forum, we can point to it the next time someone asks. People can keep adding ideas to as well.
Ahem....
on a more constructive note, how about the travel-size lotions, shampoos, etc., that one gets at hotels? Also easy to take are things like chocolate candy - Hershey bars, the minis, would be loved! Something else that I've done, but can cost a bit, is to take a Polaroid camera and lots of film (maybe some of your friends can help with cost if you do this), and take pictures of people, then give them to the people to keep. Many people, especially those out in the more rural areas, have never had their picture taken. Even the simplest things come in handy, like the battery packs that come with a battery tester in the package - so many people rely on batteries, but really have no way to test them. Just some thoughts off the top of my head...
Polaroid opportunity's
Thanks for the constructive suggestions, I still thank you for the site-tip! I thought of exactly what you mentioned regarding "Photography" There was fairly recently, a documentary I saw of a white girl(Photographer) that went to the slums/brothels of India and encouraged the offspring of the prostitutes to take pictures of their lives etc. It was amazing, really boosted the kids self esteem and they had exhibits along with published copies of their photographs. I would love to duplicate her Idea and am seriously considering this for my January 2007 trip. Got any old Brownies?
I know the
documentary of which you speak :-)! That project really changed many kids' lives. I don't have any old Brownies, but if you DO consider the Polaroid, I can help you out with some $$. Do you have a Polaroid? I did this during a mission trip I took to Honduras, and it was amazing! Just had other ideas: colorful, pretty hairclips or ponytail holders for women/girls, balloons, bandanas...let me think some more on this. And, you're welcome re the site - pretty neat stuff. And, you know, I gotta ask...do you, or don't you? (YOU know what...!)
yer a cheeky Midden!
as we say in Scotland. Thanks for the offer. I am O.K. on the money side-hopefully nobody at Revenue Canada is on this. I do have a Polaroid, I would have to dust it off and I will be spending at least a couple of days at El Crucero for a visit with kids. Not sure if Polaroid is really the way to go..Film is hard to get and of course runs out fast. I can imagine kids taking shots that would be useless for the purpose long term, even if it would be good for a short term laugh....like shots of under my kilt! no comments please...
So is true then
Those crazy scots don't like to wear much under their kilts, luckely it was never windy when I meet some of your countryman.

Photo Printer
A couple of years ago I brought a compact photo printer with me to Esteli. It's a big hit. Prints from cards or pic bridge. They are only ~ $150 and it costs 0.25/print. I leave it in Esteli with a friend. If your are up that way, I can give you the contact and you can use it while you are there. Every picture tells a story!
Printer
Thanks for the offer. I sent you a P.M. Talking about Pictures did you happen to see the Baseball Photo's ("Our Gang"..not my words) submitted by Sherrybrry? She makes it look easy.
Hmmm...
interesting that you wear kilts. Have you visited www.utilikilts.com? Someone else I know (male) also wears them, and absolutely swears (no pun intended!) by them as well. Cool... (again, no pun intended...or maybe for this, it was:-)!)
What a great site!
Thanks. you learn something everyday from an N.L. Member. I notice no evidence of Sporrans-that could be tricky. Anyway, thanks again, however, I really would like some feedback on suggestions of items (useful) to take.
Dirtbag couple of ideas
Some parfume will go a long way(even if is not a prime necessity), because is very expansive over there. Some cream for face or body, deodorants, toothpaste, some good quality toothbrush, some fancy hairclips and fancy earings for the lovely nica kids, some toys like lego, I'm sure those items will make some people very happy, I can't think of anything else at the moment, if I get any more ideas I will let you know.
Hope I was of assistance.

Thanks, you were of great assistance
The Perfume is a great idea and not too heavy, reminds me of Cuba wher any cosmetics are hugely welcome. also the other items you mentioned. Tell me when you get to Nicaragua-I'll bring you a Panatone? from Milano. Sounds like you may need some good cheese as well. Now what about some Vino? Sorry, not to get off track I LOVE Italian food.
No problem Dbag
I just remembered if you take more then one parfume customs may think you doing some business, so as an advice you better open them, so they will look like yours, therefore not taxable.
Don't go to any trouble about panettone and so on, especially cheese(they don't travel too well)
Seems like we share the same passion on italian food, we should get togheter sometimes and indulge uorself a little bit.
I don't know when I'm next to Nicaland, but hope sonner rather then later, ciao
