Over 40 photos of Felix Damage including Ortega with US Troops
La Voz del Sandinismo has an extensive gallery of over 40 photos of Felix damage. These photos may be viewed as being largely PR for Ortega, but include numerous shots of the damage and US troops delivering aid. [If I'm not mistaken, Ortega has lost a bit of weight since taking office!]

New Rigged Poll???
What male chauvinist designed the latest poll, "Your Favorite Nicaraguan President?" :)
Why isn't Violeta Barrios de Chamorro on the list???
Or at least a "None of the Above?"
Considering all of the illustrious leaders listed, I'm surprised that William Walker's "presidency" wasn't also included. :)

Ometepe Hotel suggestion
I am looking for suggestions of hotels on Ometepe. I have stayed in Villa Paraiso, but know that there are other hotels that have recently opened within the year or so. We are traveling with kids and a baby during Christmas. Any suggestions?

New Website
Hello,
I used to be an active reader and participant in the forum, but lately have been away to tend to business matters. I'd like to announce my new site to everyone: www.vinniesworld.com.
I've been a frequent visitor to Nicaragua and have made a great many friends and business associates. I also own some property in a few developments near the Pacific coast. So part of my premise for my site is to assist others who may be interested in relocating or investing in properties in the locations I am present.
I plan to work with new developers and sales agents and to provide additional information and first person perspective to help others that are interested.
If it's determined this is not suitable for the forums here, is there a place that I can announce my website and invite others to check it out? Or what about placing a banner ad?
Thanks for the time and consideration.

Proposed Title: Getting around Nicaragua with your young children
Which Forum: Not sure
Question: I am headed to Granada for 1 1/2 months with my 1 yr old and I'm looking for any advice one may have for young toddlers. I'm wondering about bikes with baby seats, strollers, car seats(?), cribs, etc. Are those items available there? Do moms take their toddlers on bikes or is it mainly a walking city for them? I appreciate any info. Thanks!

Is there any recent evidence that real estate owned by the present President and the former President is becoming "available"?

New forum topic
Hi moderator,
Can we please have a forum under health called medicines/drugs.
I'm from Australia and the drugs available here a completely...surprise, surprise... foreign to me. No really in Oz we have completely different brandnames and I would like to know what typical drugs people use when they, for example, have a headache, migraine, backache, sore throat, sinus congestion, etc. Obviously, you get used to knowing the brandnames for treatments you use and aren't always aware of the active ingredients. And even when you know the active ingredient you don't know how much of it there was in each dose - in other words it's hard to tell how strong they are or how many you should take etc.
Thanks

Dog Poisoning
Forum: Protecting our Animals Comment: A few days ago, our beloved German Shephard, Rocky, was poisoned and killed. We are not sure by whom but were very saddened. We were told this sort of thing occurs when people are looking to break in. I guess the first step is killing the 'alarm system'. We understand that sometimes animals do not mean much to some nicaraguans but are very hurt that our dog had to die so violently. There was nothing we could do to help him other than stand by and watch him slowly die. He was an older dog and did not respond to any measures we took to rid his system of the poison. I've posted his picture temporarily on our account. As well, we understand some might feel we should express more of a concern with human lives as opposed to animals. Rest assured that our whole purpose in coming to nicaragua was to help people in any way possible. we are here as volunteers. I'm sure you're thinking that this is quite the morbid email but if you have any advice as to why or what we could have done to avoid this, we would be indebted to you.
New Forum
I am proposing a new forum.
Title: Nicaraguan Investment Opportunities
Forum I feel it belongs too: I did not see a suitable forum title in the forums page.
My question:
In the left side bar of this site under sponsor there is a picture/link that leads to info on a real estate investment group called Nicaragua Properties. They claim a 30% average annual return on investments.
Is there anyone here that is not directly affiliated with this group that has experience or knowledge of this group and their integrity?
Thanks!

Eric Voltz. American arrested etc.
Why are all the comments relating to this subject showing up as " PAGE NOT FOUND" ?
or
you can contact him directly, since suspiciously the prison seems to have gotten Internet access Eric Volz
ODD
This moring this person claimed to be Eric Volz, with all of his Biographical information. Now he is someone different!
My blog I deleted it.
You can try and find the friends of eric page on the internet and contact them for updates.
I have asked them on several ocasions for updates as per their request page, and they have not responded. I tried to keep everyone up to date on what was going on, yet they did not seem to want to help. They do not seem to feel the cause is very important to those following, therefor I do not.
Links
It was good of you do keep up on it and post the links.
very strange . . .
I'm really looking forward to the explanation.
Maybe the policia
needed it for evidence???
Looks to me
like the whole Eric Volz thing went "poof"!

Skype Cast
Anyone interested in joining a Skype Cast on Nicaragua? You must have Skype version 3 and probably DSL. A Skype Cast is like being on a conference call with as many as 40 people. The host can control how many people can talk at once so it isn't total chaos. It's free.
Just woundering if there is any interest and what time is best for people. It would be great to have people in country.
[This probably isn't a forum topic. Can an admin please move it to a more appropriate place? Maybe to SNR. I tried to delete it but don’t have the rights, only for editing.]
A "how to..." forum
(I'm not even sure this a forum topic, but it is an area of concern which could be still be helpful to some people)
Some folks when posting their blogs, or replies, or commentaries, make references to other authorities, or sources - for example, on a particular debate the author may refer to a previous forum discussion. Always that reference, appears in bright blue and the reader can immediately click onto that site and refer to it. Posting pictures is another example. There are other technical 'how tos' that would be helpful to (technically) computor illiterate persons like myself.
Is this temporary
or has some decision been made about who can post topics ?
Only implementation issues
This request forum will remain. We have the plan but just need to set up new permissions and move people around and also get some moderators to volunteer a bit of time.
So, let's turn this into an ad. We are looking for some people to volunteer to be forum moderators. Your responsibilities will be:
If you are interested, send a PM to fyl.
More details
As for the "blog vs. forum" question, I don't have an answer other than:
What we really wanted was to be able to have people post to the forum but it would not be published until a moderator "released it". But, that isn't an option with Drupal. So, let's see how it goes.
I already have two "I will moderate" messages which is very cool. I am going to write up a page on how we will "share the work". With 6-10 people with moderator access I think this will be little work for most, will keep the forums clean and offer little delay for the person with a new question.
concept - dont know if this exists or not
New people, or even people not logged in, can get to a data entry page t pose a question or make a statement. They key in some stuff and hit the GO button.
The System rips apart the data and discards all the unknown words, common words and words containing wierd characters. The remaining words are 'interesting' ones such as jinotega, ortega, managua, cedula, immigration, importation. The System then suggests different forums that the user could consider as a final destination for the comment. Like the Amazon system says "Other people who bought this also bought ..." this would say "If you said this, perhaps you could look at these forums for answers or put this note in xxx places or send a PM to joe, mike and anne who are the experts on this subject".
Anyone know if this kind of sophistication exists?
Good idea but ...
I would love to have that capability. I can even see how it could be implemented and what I would use to implement it (Django).
That said, at the moment, NicaLiving costs money just to exist. Nothing is paying that bill. Beyond that, Pete and I have been dumping a lot of time into the site.
So, good idea and when either enough people hit the donate box (here), buy sponsorships, ... or I retire and have infinitely much free time (the least likely of the three options), don't expect it to happen.
As the dust settles, I plan to look at Joomla some more. It is another free Content Management System. I have already decided it is the right thing for NicaPlaza along with a non-free but good real estate package. Maybe it also will offer us more flexibility for this site.
Ajá!
I see you found a "button" to work! Good for you!
I like it
It might be very helpful.
you should...
Keep the moderators and they should keep themselves "undercover". I don't believe that there is any need for any of us to know who is moderating.
Just a thought.
More opinions?
My feeling is that it is better than the moderators be "well known". The moderation team won't have specific forums to moderate so I think having accountability is the best answer.
Here is how I see that it would work.
If the person making the request feels the moderator made the wrong decision, they can "appeal" by sending a PM to fyl or pete.
For "closing threads", the moderator would add a final comment that the thread had been closed indicating the reason (discussed elsewhere, off topic, ...) and then change comments to read only.
Good Point
On the other hand, it might make one paranoid. I could see a moderator as a forum "Shepard". Not beating the flock but keeping us going in the same direction. "Hey STS, please stay on topic, if you want to post about your secret girlfrien, please put it in a blog". Once we get used to topic orientated discusions in the forum areas, the moderators job would be focused on helping our new members.
I've experienced that
at http://forums.aopa.org/ they have undercover moderators. They get criticized for hiding behind anonymity. Their problem is they don't always moderate fairly - they lock some threads that were innocuous and let threads continue that some find offensive. We need easy-to-follow rules for moderators, and they need to follow them. When threads are locked, the reason needs to be included so we know exactly why it was done and learn from the mistake.
So if moderators are anonymous, they have some big boots to fill. They'll be held to a very high standard.
I would think that if there
I would think that if there was a complaint about how something was moderated, it could be taken up to Fyl or Pete. and of course anything that was moderated should be kept in files accessible to the moderators and owner of this website.
Yep
Agreed. What we are looking for is a moderator who on one hand has a thick skin and on the other, respect for others opinions. That thrown in with a dash of common sense.
ahhhhhhh
that will eliminate 99% of the NL members.
Roger Troll
Were not going to let you go that easy Roger, your not going anywhere or we will hunt you down and climb your antenna. :-) Were not talking about eliminating anyone, just controling the opening of forum topics. We hope to keep on topic in the forum areas. Everything else more or less remains the same. If you turn that over to the people who create new topics in the first place (Not Rants but real topics), it wont make much of a differece anyway. I can give you statistics over the last couple of months and put a number on it. Only about 6% of registared Nicaliving members create new topics. A slightly larger pool add content through commenting in the topic sections.
I've just thought
of a problem. If folk have to ask for permission to post they will use their blog instead (as at the moment) so there will be no sorting by category at all. Perhaps you've already got an answer to this (apart from stopping people posting blogs!)
Answer
A forum is not the same as a blog. We will all continue to use our blogs. There will be those people who understand the value of having a different area, where we stay on topic and build a repository of "Useful discussion". This will be the area where people will go to look for answers to their questions.
As always there will be those people who march in the parade, those who watch it and yet other who say "Was there a parade." The beauty of the blog is that it's your, our place to let people know how we feel about something. The forums will be a tool that delivers the mission of this site.
