UPI

Nothing we haven't already said but the UPI story is here. [Thanks Candy Heart.]

E y T says Ortega won

In an article in Prensa Latina,

Nicaragua's independent organization "Etica y Transparencia" has granted the electoral win in the first round to Sandinista candidate Daniel Ortega, based on results of a quick counting held parallel to the official one.

Percentages they have are FSLN 38.49%, ALN 29.52%.

PLC

didnt come far behind. I was kind of surprised. thought they would have been less than the MRS

Official results

While they are still stuck at 14.7%, looking at the official results is interesting. You see, for example, that the PLC is way ahead of the ALN in Nueva Segovia. Had everyone had equal access (that probably means equal money) to campaign I think you would have seen quite different numbers.

In particular, I think you would have seen the MRS get a lot more votes and probably taking close to equally from the FSLN and ALN. Much of the ALN success can clearly be pegged to the money they had.

Parallel Vote Counts?

From Prensa Latina:

CSE data were rejected by Montealegre, who says that parallel vote counts by other entities, whose results are still unknown, take to a runoff.

Huh? Where would these counts come from?

Prensa Latina on election irregularities

Prensa Latina (Cuba) contrasts US statement about irregularities with that of other sources.

NPR interviews Carter

Good interview with Jimmy Carter. Audio version avalalable. Carter interview for 5 Nov.

Carter Center

Just listened to the Carter Interview. Carter seems very impressed with Nicaraguan elections - Fair, Accessible, well organized, and consistent in design. US elections have many problems with inconsistency between states, counties, etc, and they are unfair to poor people. US elections cannot qualify for oversight by the Carter Center.

Carter a great man

but an Unbiased Observer?

Faux News

How would you like his bias tilted? I believe that Carter's mission here is to see that the election is operated in a free and fair manner. How would any personal bias come into play on his part? You should have seen Carter on Book TV last month discussing his liaison with North Korea.

Unbiased?

Jimmy Carter hated Ronald Reagan almost as much as he hates Ted Kennedy. He will not discuss these 2 men in interviews. Jimmy Carter was President of the United States of America while the FSLN rose and took over government in a coup d'etat in July 1979. In November of that year the Iranian students took over our embassy. So these events happened under his watch whatever any opinion. Carter did not see the FSLN as a threat to America.

Soviet troops were in Nicaland.

Reagan did see these troops as a threat and used both of these issues against Carter in the campaign successfully. Carter thinks he deserves more credit for what he did in office and maybe he does-but in order to do this he has to diminish the name Reagan.

Carter has greatly improved his legacy since he left the White House.

Unbiased? No way. Unbiased to me would be a person like Wayne "dog" Chapman.

A lil humor

Carter says the Sandinista and Chaves reward or will reward the poor with fertilizer!! Wow can i have two hand fulls!!!! The part about the Us political system not being able to qualify is really interesting and should be widely discussed in the states. But seriously bribing people with shit, If that ain't keeping en em poor i don't know what is!!!

Fertilizer

I see the irony. At least its better than a cookie. The cookie becomes sh*t. The fertilizer is useful sh*t that will be used on crops to make healthy vegetables which can be eaten or can be sold or bartered - eventually becoming sh*t once again.

What came first

The Shit or the Cookie.

Over 70% voted

First mention I have seen of voter turnout. More than 70%. (Article is in Spanish.) clarin.com. (Argentina, I think.)

2.3m votes

La Prensa shows 14.65% of votes counted, or 338,598 votes. That computes to 2.3million votes. If that's 70% turnout, then there are 3.3m eligible voters. Is that the correct figure?

BBC

With 15% counted from the BBC.

Chief Nicaraguan election official Roberto Rivas struck out at a US embassy statement suggesting "anomalies in the electoral process".

"We have promised the Nicaraguan people transparent elections, and that's what we've done," he said.

Jarquin Mentioned

First article I have seen where there is a mention of the MRS. AP article from CNN
