That's nice to know Nicabuff
Do you have the figures for each Department?
Official numbers
You can find the CSE official counts here. Click on the tabs to get the results for Diputados...
thanks padre
I was using that Website and I even clicked on those tabs but the figures are so similar on each tab that I just glanced at them and didn't notice that the Webpage had changed.
Its interesting that the percentages are so close to being the same for each department and for each party, on every tab.
Interesting to note that the
Interesting to note that the PLC has almost caught up with ALN and are leading in Jinotega, RAAS, Chontales, Boaco, and Rio San Juan while the ALN has the lead in Rivas, Masaya, and Granada. The race if also very tight in Matagalpa and RAAN.
In the RAAS the FSLN only
In the RAAS the FSLN only received an estimated 22% of the votes, PLC is winning with an estimated 45%, second is ALN with estimated 30% of votes. Based on roughtly 82% of votes counted there.
New numbers as of 1839
Official numbers were just updated. 60.9% of the precincts reporting:
Oh well
Looks like he will win but the fact remains, more people wanted someone else in every department.
To you have any figures on the other representatives.
2.66% difference between a
2.66% difference between a runoff and Daniel Ortega's victory!
Not exactly
You actually need to see about a 9.5% change in the remaining votes from the current pattern to get to a runoff. Seems pretty unlikely.
Doesn't he need to win by
Doesn't he need to win by at least 5% of the vote if he is under 40% of the vote?
You're right...
You're right...
But you're missing Phil's point
Mathematically, because nearly 61% of the vote is already counted, the remaining ballots would have to shift from current patterns by over 9% either for Montealegre or away from Ortega to prevent Daniel from winning. That would be a major shift.
Elections
Reuters has had some decent election coverage. I still have faith in the Nicaragua people and those of us who really love Nicaragua, should have faith in their choice and support who THEY CHOSE. AFTER ALL WE ARE GUESTS IN THEIR COUNTRY, no matter how much some of us have invested there. Hope & Pray for the best in your life and that is what will happen. Here's the Reuter's link.

What do u guys think about these results?
I'm kinda scared now about the future in Nicaragua, especially 'cause I'm still in school (public school),I mean..all I've heard is that he shouldn't be the president anymore but other people say that it was a punishment to the PLC and ALN followers because of the sepparations they had...who knows?

70% voter turnout!!!
We norteamericanos should all be proud to have such a strong democracy in our backyard!!!!
I felt kind of proud
There were lines as early as 7:30 a.m. and all day long the mood seemed calm and peaceful, lot's of people smiled as they showed me thier purple thumbs...
The CSE will be issuing
The CSE will be issuing preliminary results following the closing of the polls.
"El Consejo dijo que el primer informe preliminar sobre el resultado de los comicios será dado a las 23.00 (0500 GMT) con el conteo de un 6 a 7% de los votos, un reporte más a media noche, otro posiblemente una hora después. El siguiente será a las 07.00 del lunes (1300 GMT)".
We will be able to monitor the results via these sites:
www.cse.gob.ni
www.elecciones2006.net.ni
07.30 your time
and the graphics on eleccionnes.net haven't changed for several hours. Nothing on BBC news.
Any concrete info?
latest figures
I checked at least 10 newspapers, mostly Latin American ones because I thought that they would be more interested. I even found one on Yahoo News that was only 14 minutes old but none had any new figures. One did say that there would be no more results until 8 am tomorrow.
Thanks
for the info, Jack
I saw on TV (Nicaraguan) a
I saw on TV (Nicaraguan) a reporter report that the margins have changed slightly, giving Daniel 38% and Montealegre a slight increase in points. One channel looping the FSLN campaign video (set to the tune of Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance." A reporter then broke in to hold up the Nuevo Diario's headline, "Gano' Daniel."

If you don't speak Spanish there are PDF file translations. Don't ask me why but you can read it in English if you click on "Creole" in the left column.

Creole in Nicaragua = Creole
"Creole" in Nicaragua = Creole English, which is what is spoken in parts of the Atlantic Coast...
I know what Creole is
but they show regular English. They show better English than a free Spanish-English translator does on the Spanish.

www.laprensa.com.ni and www.elnuevodiario.com.ni both promise ongoing coverage of results.

With the thousands of foreign reporters covering the election I imagine there will be many sources available. If not we can always go check out Fidel's slant on it (in English) at: http://www.plenglish.com/
I don't understand why none of the Nicaraguan sources have an English version. They could at least add one of the many free translators to their Website.
Chavez mouthpiece down
Don't try to visit our "sponsor" vheadline.com -- they've been down for about a week now. Considering how far they had their nose up Chavez's ass, they must have done something pretty stupid to have to go down.
Not for long?
I read that Venezuela's presidential election is Dec. 2. What if Hugo loses?
Hugo on the Loose
Not likely, but the world would lose a positive influence for Freedom and Democracy.ViVa Chavez
Please explain honky about your ViVa Chavez remark.
Are you being sarcastic or do you realy believe that.
Scarcasismistic
You tell first where you are coming from before I do. Do you watch Fox News ?
World news
Most of the time I watch CNBC which just skims the news, if I have time I watch two different CNN channels, then I switch to MSNBC and then to FOX. I also listen to BBC if I am in the car. I try to balance all these sometimes obviously biased viewpoints.
I pick serious
I would certainly agree with his comment. If this makes no sense to you, read "Chávez: Venezuela & The New Latin America" by Aleida Guevera (reviewed here by me) and then re-consider your position.
better yet...
Read Chavez's mouthpiece and NicaLiving sponsor:

You're a comedian!
He and Bill Clinton can go on the lecture and strip club tour together.
Hugo may have a 20% lead in the polls, but "hundreds of thousands" of his opponent's supporters marched in the streets of Caracas. That's nothing to sneeze at. Hugo may be soliciting Danny's help next month.
election results
it's 9:30pm southern Ontario time (about 7:30 your time in Nica) and the local media are predicting a DO victory, and are not predicting any major socio-political dictatorship. Basically, they're saying A DO victory will result in a modest improvement to the average Nica's circumstances
On the Postive Side
If Ortega wins which seems likely, and the country stays stable and investments are protected, this would be helpful in the long term for investors because it would remove the uncertainty of an Ortega win. In other words, if that which you fear comes true and it turns out to be not so bad, then the fears are gone.
Or, if it flops ...
While there is a lot of concern about "investments" to me the investment is in democracy. If Nicaragua is allowed to pick their own government and that government is then free to run the country as it sees fit (meaning minus a blockade, ...) then Nicaraguans can finally learn about democracy.
Maybe what they think is a good government will flop. Maybe it will do well. We just don't know other than we do know that the US-picked governments have not helped the majority of the nicaraguans. The result is that nicaraguans have been forced, again, to pick between what they think might be the best path or more of the same (Rizo and Montealegre have both served in important posts in the last two presidencies) with fear of US reprisal being a big ingredient.
Let's give nicaraguans a chance. Business is "in it for the money". They will invest when they see something the feel is working.
U.S. picked?
There have been 3 elections where the Nicaraguan people got to choose. They already have had 19 years to run the country as they saw fit. Bolanos was trying to improve things but he couldn't control the congress. Now we will have several more years of standing still.
Businesses were ready to invest, now they either won't or at least they will continue to hold off until they have a better idea about the future. More wasted years.
Two references to start
I actually don't have a lot of info on the 1996 election. But, here are two worth starting with for the others.
The US had very little to do with it
and they were more than cancelled out by Chavez.
In previous elections Ortega lost because there was stronger opposition.
Taking the latest results from: http://www.elecciones2006.net.ni/escrutinio/general_p.htm (which I am sure are not final) you will see that only 28.5% of the people wanted him. That means that 71.5% wanted someone else.
If just about any of the other leaders had joined forces he would have lost. Either the PLC + ALN or the ALN+ MRS have enough votes together to beat him.
Unless these figures change quite a bit he hasn't won yet. 28.5% is a lot less than 35%.
But we DO know.
Why is the FSLN being treated like an unknown variable? History tells us what they're all about. We already know what happens when Marxists come into power - they flop and have to be propped up at the point of a gun and by foreign money.
Even if...
even if Ortega has changed to be a "Perfect" human being.
how could someone want someone that did such bad things in the past to be the next president, there has to be other options within the party.
The next pope should be the guy that tried to shoot J.P. II, would that make sense?
or
Hitler came back to life, dug himself out of the grave and became a "perfect" Human being. and then they try and re-elect him into presidency of Germany again.
Does any of this make sense?
Its ashame
Now that the elections have been almost determined, and Ortega seems to be the winner as of the moment.
Its ashame we can't have the elections again, and just tell everyone vote for who you really feal is best, even though you know that Ortega has won.
Maybe its the wrong wording. do you understand what Im getting at?
