Actually, it cost C$35 and weighs about 10 lbs. That's the papaya, not Ana. She weighs a bit more.

big Papayas

Some of the papaya trees on my property had fruit like that when I was there last Christmas. The people that I was buying the property from said that the squirrels ate a lot of them. That's okay, there are supposed to be about 250 fruit trees and papayas are a long way down on my list of favorites.

Expensive delicacy

Papayas from Belize and Costa Rica go for about $1.75/lb. in Florida, so that one would be US$17.50! And they're shipped green and never ripen properly.

Food prices

We walked thru market on the way back from a morning walk. We bought 6 chiltomas (sweet peppers--some red, some green), 2 huge avocados, the papaya, a pound of potatoes, bunch of carrots, two cucumbers, 20 bananas and a squash. Ana complained that she had had C$140 with her and now she only had C$6. So, we spent about $7.50. I started telling her what this would have cost in the US.

Of course, this is a lot of money for the average Nicaraguan around here. On the other hand, we had potatoes from the finca, have beans and tomatoes and will have more guavas, jocotes, papaya, ... just from the back yard.

One of the coolest things is that with year-round growing seasons you get fresh (and inexpensive) stuff all the time. We had mangos from the yard, for example. I figure that next year the avocado tree will have fruit. The bananas are getting big and should fruit soon. ...

FYL - could you

give me an idea of the age of the trees you have + when they started cropping ? I can't afford to wait ten years, sadly.

Not sure

That's the generic answer. The bananas are less than a year old. They produce children, fruit and die. That's a magic cycle. All the others were here when I bought the house. I am reasonably sure the avocado is just the result of a pit getting tossed in the yard. I am guessing it is three years old. Most of the others seem to have been planted in a semi-logical manner. I am guessing 5 years or so.

The exception is the papaya. It wasn't here when we were building the new wall about 1.5 years ago. It wasn't planted--it just happened. It is about 10' tall and has lots of papayas on it now.

Thanks

for the info FYL. Looks as if I might get to eat my own stuff yet !

fruit trees

When we visit South America we have fruit trees in our yard and it's great when the kids walk by, they NEARLY always ask if they can shin up the tree and get some. Mango's are "Big Items" in season. Also Advocado's which they call "Pears" I am always amazed at how nimble they are, especially climbing for Water Coconuts! Just a thought, how many kids in North America would put "Gameboys" aside to do that? or even consider it a treat! Maybe I'm just being a Grumpy old Fart.

PAPAYA

Now that's a Papaya! next to Guava my favorite fruit. I hope you didn't have a long walk!
