Catedral Santiago de los Caballeros

Catedral Santiago de los Caballeros

This is one of the most photographed Catedrals in Managua. Even though it cannot be used or entered. It had just been completed in 1931 when a earthquake struck, it survived but the big one of 1972 made it unusable. You can go up to the front door and peer into it but it is to dangerous to enter. It is located at the PLAZA de la REVOLUCION.

I was lucky enough

to visit the 'inside' of the cathedral in 2001 . They were also displaying the recently discovered remains of Cordoba.

I recall the

days when my school, amongst others, would gather in the plaza for national holidays and march, kinda like what padre had pics of a couple of months ago (in Granada). Ah, memories...thanks, Tom!

Finally!

A positive comment without any negative arguments or political discussion. Just reminders of a time in your minds long ago. Thanks

Thank you

Do you want more!

Is this the one next to the presidential palace?

We've been in it. A couple years ago there was a proposal to restore it.

Renovation

I was there last Thursday and they have cordoned off the entire cathedral to begin renovation. I will try to post some pictures later.

Probably needs

some reinforcements. I would love to see a restoration of the cathedral, but dang... that would take a lot of parishioners.

I remember I saw a marble piece that weighed more than me. It was just strewn on the floor. It still bore the numbers painted in the back for assembly.

I was there a couple of years ago as well.

The first time I was there was about 9 years ago. At that time you could walk inside (provided you were on the lookout for falling rock and prostitutes looking to make a buck)

Been there...

In December 2003 one was still allowed inside -- very well done cathedral compared to the new one which reminds of that place in Turkey...

All the projects to restore the place have failed due to lack of funds. Considering the Church is the largest enterprise on the planet, one would think they could spare a few million to make this at least respectable again.

I agree ...what is a few $Million.

to restore the Managua Cathedral? Here in Oakland, CA. the Catholic Church is spending $131 Million on the Cathedral of Christ the Light when there already is a beautiful and underused Cathedral, Our Lady of Lourdes, less than a mile away from where they are building the new Cathedral. I think they need to change the name to Cathedral of Christ the Rich!

Catholic $'s

They also spend them to put through some pretty bad legislation as well.

I'm glad

you brought this up, Jack. I meant to do it the other day, but got distracted. If passed, this will be diastrous for the women of Nicaragua, as well as for the doctors. This article didn't mention another part, which is that this will apply to even women impregnated by rape. Now, to me, THAT'S criminal!

The last attempt at restoration

was from Mexico as I recall. We were there at night, and it was lit up like a Halloween haunted house, but it wasn't Halloween (not that they even celebrate that there). I remember seeing down into the crypts, but they were roped off. If there were prostitutes they must have thought I wasn't worth approaching as I don't recall any.
