Putting info in perspective
This article offers no reference information or comparisons. A quick look at the US Department of Justice statistics offers a bit of information for comparison. I say "a bit" because while there is significant information available from 1976 to present, it isn't directly comparable. It does show a sharp drop in homicide rates during the Clinton presidency, however.
In the referenced article we see
The population of Venezuela is about 26 million and about 40% are under 18. US DOJ statistics show homicide rates among 14-17 year olds of from 4 to 12 per 100,000. It also shows that in general homicide rates are double that rate in the cities.
A little arithmetic: 3 x 365 x 100,000 / (26,000,000 x .4) gives us an equivalent number for Venezuela. It is about 10.5. Thus, it is an equally accurate statement that "homicide rates among kids under 18 in Venezuela tend to be in line with those in the US". I could also toss in that I don't know of any government program in the US that exists to combat this problem".
Now that we have covered Venezuela, anyone have the numbers for Nicaragua? As the overall homicide rate for Nicaragua is about half that of the US, I would expect it to be lower.
you can't
get true figures in a police-state. If you want to end poverty, elect for president a destitute man/woman who made themselves millionaires. We have a 'Fritangas'(nicaraguan food eateries) franchise in Miami and the owner rose from rag to riches.
I'd elect her president of Nicaragua. LOL She knows how to make $$$$$$$$(I don't have the Cordoba sign for money)
All true, but . . .
What does the USA have to do with anything?
The article was one guy's perspective, and I thought any bleeding heart journalist could have plugged in the name of any nation he wanted and written the same article. He could have chosen any scapegoat he wanted. But since he chose Venezuela and claims to have visited it personally, and Ortega is buddies with Chavez, and since we had a similar "children of the trash dump" thread about Nicaragua, I thought it was an interesting comparison.
It’s the least Daniel can do for Nicaragua:
Learn to reduce poverty and crime from a poverty and crime expert willing to take notice of him.
