the only thing that nailed me was fire coral.
to me what burned
like a cigarette being stuck to my skin was a tan substance that grew on different places like the sea fans etc had to rub it like hell to stop the burning. is that what I touched?

Fire coral
Just noticed that was Tom's fish above so your original comment wasn't addressed to me. Oh well.
I have never seen it on sea fans but it doesn't look like other corals. Here's a link with a few pictures, it says they are more related to jelly fish:

that is it
that stuff will hurt, been "burned plenty", but what an experiance,
The older man diving with me showed me to rub it for a good bit and the burning sting went away...left the spot plenty red but the fire left it.

Rub it
That's what I did too. The article says to rub it with, I can't remember without looking it up again, I think it was alcohol or ammonia? Then pull out the tentacles with tweezers. Rubbing probably pulls out the tentacles much the way that rubbing pulls out the prickles from a prickly pear.
Looks like a
Towel.....
real question....
did you keep it?!? i would have...
im not sure if it looks scary or beautiful... thats amazing.
i love it. by the looks of these pics, it looks like you had a great time!
