Trabajo en NicaraguaSubmitted by gjb2101 on 28 September, 2006 - 16:06.
So I'm about to graduate college and am a bit torn about what to do. Should I move back to Nica immediately and jump right in, getting a pretty slow entry level job at a small Nicaraguan company? Or would it be better to stay in the states for a while, get some more substantial experience and then go back in a few years when I have more to offer? Specifically, I'm curious to see if anyone has had any good experiences working in Nicaragua. I've held 2 unpaid summer internships at Ministerio de Gobernacion and CEM Communications, but they were absolutely useless. I pretty much just sat on my ass all day and did nothing. I wouldn't want to waste my time in Nicaragua doing the same for full-time employement. If Ortega wins, I'm definitely staying here. But otherwise I'd like to know everyone's opinions on the work situation down there. Cheers, Gabriel ( categories: )

My generic opinion
I was just going to respond here but realized I had a more generic comment. See http://www.nicaliving.com/node/6626.
My experience
I have done several internships and have had jobs both where I just sit on my ass doing nothing, barely expected to do anything for that matter.
The thing is there is always some way to get off the seat and get involved, but you have to show the initiative. So I suggest if you decide to come back to Nicaragua or stay stateside, you get the initiative, no matter what they pay or expect from you.
I have had many opportunities disapear because I chose to just sit there.
2 unpaid summer jobs
I also did a missionary internship this summer with Chosen Children Ministries, and im sorry that yours wasnt very eventful/exciting. I have a different story to tell. I cant wait, im so excited to go back next summer to work for a month or longer. I see so much potential in Nicaragua and its wonderful to be a part of the difference. I think its great you want to go down and live/work in Nicaragua and make a difference. I too want to do that and im excited to get out of school and get started. But i need to work on my spanish a little more first...lol.
Take care and good luck!
Bendiciones...

Qualifications
It depends, what are you qualified to do? That will make a difference no matter where you go. "sat on my ass all day and did nothing" - Were you in Port?
come on damit
watching the zinc rust in Port requires diligence, perserverance, dedication and only with this comes time honored experiance....
till you can sit on your ass and complete a 8 hour shift of this, don't knock it

know someone here. Take them out, buy them a drink, tell them how you had to come back from Hawaii cause you got a cold there.

loan officer
Lets see, you are 22yrs old and are bi-lingual. Why don't you get a job in a Bank that is in New York that deals with Central America. Become a Loan Officer, then you can lend me $100,000 dollars at 2%. When I am in Nica, I will put it to good use! Only Kidding.
If I were you . . .
I’d stay put right there in the largest city in the U.S. and in the most powerful country in the world, get a decent job and travel all over the world and then move to the most peaceful and productive place on earth for my retirement. And only return to Nicaragua if I were going to run for president and only if I knew I had a good chance of becoming the next president.

No thanks
I'd like to help Nicaragua out, not just make a fancy living for myself. No thanks to the presidency, anyone with moral substance can't make a difference as long as dumbasses like Aleman and Ortega are still around.

The world revolves around dumbasses
You seem like someone who would understand my theory on how to succeed in American business: http://www.nicaliving.com/node/5460#comment-40545
Be sure to read cowboy's
Be sure to read cowboy's "busy heads" post right below John's dumbass post. I think it stands out as one of my best! (Its short too).

What type of work
What type of work do you want to do. What is your degree in?
what goes along with
a good education is goals, and learning who can help you (making friends) and putting your energies toward them. Drive, not having someone tell you when to get up, when to go to work, people want leaders, not followers, what ever you do take my fathers advise that he gave me...
when you do something be the best, put your whole being into it,you will make some mistakes, those that dont, arent doing anything.

Get the best of both worlds!
Get a job in the States that allows you make frequent trips to Nicaland and help our country. Then you can opt to make a permanent move there. I know it is easier said than done but that's what I'm trying to achieve myself. It might be easier for you (although not necessarily) for, in my case, I have very little immediate family left in Nicaragua. That is, people that I know well and consider close family. I am also a very proud (or perhaps hard headed would be better word in this case) Nica and I wouldn’t accept a position because of my family’s influence. I am sure neither would you…
