Is Marijuana tolerated in Nicaragua?

Submitted by Arislan on 22 September, 2006 - 23:40.

Just curious. Last time I was there was in 1989. I don't smoke, but I remember that my father said cigarettes where impossible to find except in the Tienda Diplomatica (which I don't know if that exists either). Given the low numbers of people in jail in Nicaragua it would look like they either don't have a drug problem or a problem with drugs.

Hasnt CR decriminalized reefer for personal use?

another can o' worms thread

"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bonds of reason in that it attempts to control a man’s appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded." -- Abraham Lincoln

As far as I know the prohibition of hemp and marijuana has never been voted on by the American people if it was, the estimated 40 plus million smokers who consume an estimated 30 billion dollars of domestically grown weed might actually remember to go to the polls. Prohibition of marihuana and hemp has always been about racism and protecting the paper, cotton, pharmaceutical and alcohol industries... Here's some good links on how we got to the laws we have now

"What am I missing?" Well like my old liberal mom used to say "Try it, you might like it"

Wake up and smell the weed

Its disconcerting to me to see young people who are admittedly and unabashedly clueless about so many things - the history of MJ is one example. Another is their promulgation of the idea that people in the US make their own laws. Its supposed to work that way, but it doesn't because of monied special interests (ex: Hemp's history), ie: lobbyists, the Military Industrial Complex (Republican Eisenhower warned us about it and then walked away), the politicians in their pockets (mostly republican) and an apathetic dumbed-down and getting dumber electorate.

Reefer Madness

Did you ever see that movie? I always guessed that from the Islands, especially Jamaica, Trinidad, Dominican Republic and so on, the prime reason Rum was cheap and plentiful was because it was in the interests of the booze Companies to provide a drug for profit and some tax money to the government's that kept the working man (at least) with an opiate from the day to day hardships. The best high is a natural high.

that evil rum... A Trivia Question

What [evil] US President's father made his family fortune from running rum (er, that was illegal?) into the [evil] US via Canada?

Hint: don't think [evil] Republican.

arlington is automatically disqualified because some of that rum moved close to his home. They only smuggle cigarettes from there now to avoid the [evil] taxation on same. ;~)

they smuggle more than tobacco

Tons of high grade "BC Bud" is smuggled across the border from the Vancover, Ca area into Washington state evry month.... huh....Kennedy

East bound and down . . .

Loaded up and truckin'. We gonna do what they say can't be done.

Got a long way to go, and a short time to get there,

I'm east bound, just watch 'ole' Bandit run.

I have not seen Reefer

I have not seen Reefer Madness, but from your description of the movie, it sounds like a truthful documentary. I've read books and resources on the web. Its not rocket science, nor is it even a secret, that big business and government(s) work together (collusion)in pursuing their agenda (money and power). All one has to do is look only slightly beneath the surface and pay attention. The old theme and pattern are simply reused for newer scams against the masses.

a truthful documentary.

Not quite cowboy, it was made in the 30s shorty after the Harrison act and it is a hoot, did you know that one puff of the evil weed will make you into a mad sex crazed zombie? http://www.reefer-madness-movie.com/

My mistake. My comment

My mistake. My comment relates to the thoughts and opinion that dirtbag shared from his impression of the movie. Apparently, the film is an anti-MJ propaganda hit piece. If it ended up creating the impression that dirtbag shared, that's a good thing.

Or...

turn you into Jim Ignitowski from Taxi.

If I had to choose

I want to be the mad crazed sex fiend not Jim Ignitowski. But I often suspected that Jim and Elaine had something going on when no one was around. And how about that Simka, that's a hot babe...uh oh, maybe I took one puff too many.

That was a hilarious

That was a hilarious character.

Elaine Nardo

she was just plain hot! Even better in Johnny Dangerously. Simka was a little cutie too but it doesn't take long for me to get sick of a normal girls voice so this would be immediate...

A doob away

What can I not say, having been turned on to a toke or two in Nica- Land. Its a beautiful thing.

nope,

never would have guessed.

Grain god V.S. Seed god

Funny how the grain god is tolerated in the US and Nicaragua yet instills violence, causes accidents and red necked thinking While the seed god basks in splendor and peacefulness, forgiving most and giving creativity

No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the sources of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power. --P. J. O'Rourke

Political Nicaragua

Political Nicaragua metaphorically trembles in fear of big brother to the north who will (at least) cut off the money/debt relief if they step out of line. MJ must remain illegal, at the insistance of US Republicans, their huge theocratic base, "moderates" and assorted hypocrites. Chavez is right when he said that Bush (the USA by association) thinks he owns the world. In this modern age, MJ should be legalized, at least decriminalized. The WOD, like the WOT, is a sham.

I read PJ O'Rourke's "Peace Kills". FYI, PJ was the republican writer for Rolling Stone. "Peace Kills" demonstrates that O'Rourke is a right wing republican WOT thumper. Were he tested according to his own prescription, he would fail. Aside from his feigned approval of recreational drugs, O'Rourke is a right winger through and through.

One more thing, Mexico got a right-wing president "elected" (under MORE spurious circumstances and alleged voter fraud) who will toe the US line. The people protested for many weeks. Seems Mexico had just loosened some drug laws, prior. So much for that.

Us Election

This fall in the US the percentage of computerized voting will be up to 1/3 of votes cast.Luckily in my state (Connecticut) there was such an out cry that the Politicos were forced to pass a law requiring a paper trail. Never have read O'Rourke that much. Guess i wont bother.Catch his type all over TV every day and night, Thats enough Propaganda. Maybe move to Venezuela, Thats one part of the world Bush doesn't own------ yet-------

life just ain't fair.....

people got together and decided laws, the nerve. but you know better for them.

c'mon Jim

Surely you know the history of Marijuana laws in the US?

i plead guilty

sorry, didn't have that much interest in it. what am i missing?

Google is your friend. Try

Google is your friend. Try Hemp + Laws or Hemp + industry. In a nutshell, hemp is a fantastic agricultural product that was demonised by chemical companies and the cotton industry in collusion (as usual) with the US government (fascism). The result was the elimination of the potentially superior competitive product (hemp) by making it illegal.

I know a little...

but I did not inhale...

Nope!

I wouldn't even try it. Legal punishment is one thing, but getting involved with a Nicaraguan drug dealer can be a far more unpleasant experience, particularly for foreigners.

Pot

It depends what you mean by "tolerated". Will people lynch you if you smoke weed at night on the patio of your apartment? No. But, if what you do is well known, eventually, some night the police will visit you. Perhaps a simple C500 shakedown, perhaps not. Perhaps you will be arrested, perhaps not. Perhaps you will know who to bribe, and where, and when, and how much, perhaps not. Perhaps you will have merely a story to tell people years from now, of your 36 hours in jail (jail, not prison) playing cards with guards until the bribe came through, perhaps not. Drugs are not really tolerated in any Central American country. Enforcement is almost random, which makes it tempting for some, and especially dangerous for those who are unfamilair with the country, the language, and what to do if you are arrested (if you intend to seek help from your embassy, good luck...). Drugs are a problem almost everywhere in the world. I am not aware of small time people being especially singled out by police in Nicaragua. Police often single out medium size fish, if that makes sense. Why? Because, the bigger the fish the bigger the bribe (as a foreigned you are already medium sized because it is assumed that since you are there and can afford to be there that you have money). Of course the theory breaks down if police arrest someone really important, cause for the elite it is cheaper to off the police or threaten it, than it is to pay them off. Cigattes are everywhere in the Latin World, pot, no. It can be found easily, but it is not usually sold in public, and people who use it are not ever viewed the "same" as people who do not use it...

I wish Marlboros were hard to get

Tobacco is sold on almost every street corner, pulperia and bar that I know of...too bad smoking stinks. I was talking to a young dread locked Canadian backpacker named Brian over a giant meat ball sandwhich dinner at the Bearded Monkey when he told me his story about buying weed in Granada. It was late in the evening when he met tattoo face. Tatto face is a street kid (18?) that has been in and out of jail and trouble. His nick name is tattoo face because he has big jail house tattoos on his face...Anyways he offers the Canadian a big baggie of weed for $C200, Brian has had a few double Cuba Libres at El Club already and excitedly hands over the 200. Tatoo boy palms him a baggie and simultaneously shouts out, "cuiado..here comes the policia!" Our canadian pot head quickly crams the oddly warm baggie down the front of his over sized cargo shorts. Before he can catch his breath and before he realizes that there is no cop coming, tattoo face has dissapeared into the nite. When he pulls the baggie out to examine his reefer, he realizes he just paid 200 cords for a baggie of fresh horse sh*t...

At least

if it was Oregeno he could have used it in cooking. By the way, that story stinks.

?????????

That's why they call it "dope."

Pura Nica, Bobby

excellent story!!

jejejeje

scammed and

dumped on at the same time. too funny.

Gringo Sentence

Being a gringo, being made an example of Nicragua cracking down on trafficking, is a hard hard hard way to do time in a Central American prison.

Circumstantial evidence

From listening to the news, talking to assorted people and such it appears to be much like what I will call "the Seattle model". That roughly translates to yes, it exists, yes, people smoke it and if you are selling it or caught with enough to sell, you get arrested.

The bad news (and this comes from having a lawyer friend helping these people) is that you end up arresting the single mom who sells small quantities in order to support her family but never catch the guys making more serious money. But, I guess that is much like in the US--the decimal point is just in a different place in the amounts being earned.

That said, I have never even had an interest in smoking pot here. I feel moving to Nicaragua is a better way to remove yourself from what people in the US think is "life" than smoking pot.

Is Marijuana tolerated in Nicaragua?

NO!

From what experience do you

From what experience do you draw your conclusion?

Seeing the Policia Nacional

Seeing the Policia Nacional shut down places that were known to sell marijuana, people tossed in jail. You are invited to test the theory, although the joys of Nica Living that many speak of on this forum have nothing to do with hard time in la Modelo out in Tipitapa.

Isn't that

Where Somoza, and later the FSLN, had their infamous prisons?

Tipitapa

is where you can get delicious fish. Loma de Tiscapa in Managua is where the prisons were. Now there's a little museum up there.

Gabriel

Take Nika Pilots word for it.

You don't want to find out the hard way unless you got alot of cordobas in your pocket and alot of time to waste in a jail cell.

Diplo tienda..

Oh come on man, the diplo tienda is long gone. Those were Ortega's (or US embargo depending who you ask) time. There is an increasing drug problem with crack and cocaine use. These drugs are relatively new to Nicaragua and yes they cause big problems with the youth. Marihuana use is not tolerated by society and local authorities and fortunately neither other drugs. Life is already too complicated w/o drugs man!

if you have

a presciption for Marihuana from California(for medical reasons), it will be honored in Nicaragua, I personally know someone, who suffer a severe accident in California and was presccribed Marihunana in California and it was honored in Esteli.

FAP

honored what?

what does that mean? are there MJ clinics in Esteli? how can one get medical MJ in Nicaragua..... btw, i am a quadriplegic and use it.

i always have purchased high-quality bud in Costa Rica and brought it back across the border. Smoking the garbage found in Nicaragua should be illegal!

jalaluyah

Honored means

If you can prove and have legal documentations from the U.S.A stating that you need MJ for medical reason, you could buy it/posses it legaly in Nicaragua, I don't know anything about MJ in Nicaragua, never used it, I suggest to ask the local authorities, since my friend accident happened about 7 years ago, the laws may have changed.

FAP

I have chronic illness

and I need several types of medication. Are there good doctors there? can I just bring my records from my physican in the USA??? Where is the best hospital?

Do the doctors sell the medication or are there drug stores? I only spent 10 days in NIcaragua but hopefully I'll be spending my winters there soon.
