Subtitled, The Making of a Sandinista, this book is a friendly-reading personal story of the life of Omar Cabezas starting before English-speaking people had ever heard of a Sandinista. I found this to be one of the best books to fill in this background information. This isn't an outsider's opinion--it is what it was really like.
From a quote on the back cover from The Los Angeles Times: "Because Cabezas became the man he is by hiding nothing from himself, he hides nothing from the reader."
This is an English translation. It was initially published as Montaña es algo más que una immensa estepa verde.

an excellent book
It is an easy read and does put some real life to what most of us know as history. You don't have to agree with the politics to enjoy this book. And you can find good, cheap, used copies via Amazon.com.
