My guess
I don't know that this is what happened but it is really common to see someone in a car decide they can pass a slow-moving vehicle--usually a tractor or ox cart--where they just don't have the visibility. This was common in Costa Rica as well but your odds are better here just because there is less traffic. I still, however, don't recommend it.
