Shark Fins for Sale in San Juan del Sur

Shark Fins for Sale in San Juan del Sur

These shark fins were laying out to dry along the side of the road in San Juan del Sur. Most were fins from large sharks. Some came from young sharks as little as 2 to 3 feet long.

Todays fishermen are not

living in the past as neanderthauls as some would think.

they are more protective of natural resources than the average person that has investments in coastal projects that have perminately done away with or have made changes to an ecosystem that will never return.

Urban sprawl has done more damage to a RENEWABLE resource than anything on earth.

Economics 101 for fishermen (Commerical) a person cannot persist with a costly operation and kill the last one... long before the "Seed is Broken" on a certain species, econimics FORCE him to look else where for another target giving the last one a oppertunity to recooperate.

Most of the ones I hear complaining are the biggest destroiers of the natural order of things

In our modern times nothing is thrown away any more if I sell Shark fins, I have to show where went the meat....

BTW prepaired and cooked right it is fine eating.

Seafood production is one of the most dangerous occupations known to man. and is expensive with equpt. to... and if you enjoy it you have to pay for it. Sorry but that is how it is.

Lyin' Farmer John Wayne

I completely agree with everything John has said

especially how dangerous the work is.

My "disgust" was based on a practice of finning sharks, which was represented in the picture. And it has nothing to do with Nicaragua or any Atlantic fishing operations.

I, too have enjoyed shark meat and it is delicious. If the legal organizations in Nicaragua are comfortable with the amount of sharks being harvested and concluding that it is sustainable, then that is great. If the shark is being sold for meat, then why not sell the fins? I agree with that philosophy. But sharks, unlike most fish simply do not reproduce at a high rate and can not compete with humans in general. They have been at the top end of the food chain for over 50 million years but now must compete with humans as never before and why.....because some Asian guy wants only the fins for his soup or pecker reinforcement. And that is BS.

There are plenty of other fish in the sea...leave 'em (sharks) alone. And this is not a Nicaragua statement, it is a general statement.

Finning IS illegal in Nicaragua

At least on the Pacific side of Nicaragua, by treaty, finning is illegal. Interesting to note that Nicaragua was one of the sponsors of the resolution. Another interesting read about 30 tons of fins being landed in Costa Rica. Think for a minute how many sharks died to produce 60,000 pounds of fins. Thousands?

This has been a HUGE battle in CR where the practice has been to land fins at "private" docks where the CR official-dom has no jurisdiction. Even more ridiculous is the current practice of finning, then attaching the fins to other species of fish with duct tape. Interpret and/or equate "attached" as something close to "it depends on what the meaning of is is"...

For the uninformed, the commercial practice of finning is to catch the shark, cut off the fin, and dump the corpse back into the sea...

FWIW, I have no problem with catching and eating sharks. But much as I loathe the era in the [evil] US where millions of buffalo were slaughtered solely for their hides, I cannot condone the commercial practice of shark finning.

Concerned Floridians

Let's start looking a little closer to home first...how about the all too prevalant shark tournaments in FLA.

Bet that most participants don't even harvest the fins!!

Tastes like license plates?

NicaNix had an aerial photo showing one of those unbuilt gated communities where all the trees were gone and it was just dirt washing into the ocean. I can't find the picture now. There's no more environmentally damaging form of housing than the gated community. Sorry if that upsets people, but like LFJW said, that's how it is.

I guess I'll keep quiet about land-sharks in a thread about shark-finning, even if I would like to see most land-sharks 'finned'...

gracias

I wouldn't have thought to look in "Managua".

The Search "feature"

I've spent many a frustrating moment using the Droolpal search "feature". I've often found it MUCH faster to google something on NL than use its resident engine...

However, a tip on how I found this. I searched on "nicanix" -- it brings up lots-o-threads. Then I clicked on "users" which magically brings up "nicanix". Then I click on "nicanix" and it brings up his profile. Then I click on "track" and voila -- I get all the threads in which nicanix has posted to or started.

Simple process, eh?

Att: "NL" Search Challenged Members

I put the words "Gran Pacifica" in the "NL Search" box at the top right corner of this page.

The picture along with "Dale Dagger's" comment appeared as the 2nd choice.

Whew! - That was sooooo difficult.

Miskito Alan &#174

Whew!

Try it NOT knowing that John's post was referring to Gran Pacifica...

The persecution of Droolpal rests... :~)

I Admit It

I have a "pornographic memory".

I never forget anything as you, of all people, well know.

Miskito Alan &#174

ok challenge....

please find my story where i am sitting on the back of the truck and big city slicker needs a criminal lawyer.

Hear - Hear

John - Very well said and a very accurate analysis.

Jimmy Buffett Fins

She came down from Cincinnati It took her three days on the train Lookin' for some peace and quiet Hoped to see the sun again But now she lives down by the ocean She's takin' care to look for sharks They hang out in the local bars And they feed right after dark Can't you feel 'em circlin', honey Can't you feel 'em swimmin' around You got fins to the left, fins to the right And you're the only bait in town Oh oh Oh oh You got fins to the left, fins to the right And you're the only girl in town

Fins

Better than "a Cheeseburger in Paradise" but not on the level with "Margaritaville" or "Come Monday" or for laughs "Why don't we get drunk".

come monday....

is his best, next, fins, next cheeseburger. margaritaville and get drunk are ok. some him two times at the woodlands outdoor theater.

I agree

"A Pirate looks at 40" isn't too bad, but Come Monday is my fav. too. "...Come Monday I'll be holding you tight. I spent 4 lonely days in that brown LA haze and I just want you back by my side."

For Nicaragua the calypso "Volcano" is probably the best. "I don't know where I'm a gonna go when the Volcano blow. . . . . . Where I go I hope there's rum. . .Not to worry monsoon come."

And for Nicaragua Living:

I would dedicate his " Changes in Attitudes changes in Latitudes", " I've gotta go were the weather is warm. . . . For all of our running and all of our cunning if we couldn't laugh we would all go insane."

Maybe we should make Jimmy Buffet our mascot.

You guys don't realize the the trouble that it takes to check out these songs. I had to open a 2nd bottle of wine.

A Pirate Looks at Forty

The all time best!

hmmm...

That song does sound hauntingly familiar...

You mean http://www.nicaliving.com/node/3613

I've already cast my vote: http://www.nicaliving.com/node/6291

saw him

not some him. my bad.

Pencil Thin Moustache and

A White Sport Coat And A Pink Crustacean are my favorites. Oh and also Son of A Son of a Sailor.

Some good ones

Life is just a tire Swing & Biloxi (my favorites), 12 volt man, brahma fear, tin cup chalice, coast of marseilles, ballad of spider john, he went to paris, & of course god's own drunk. Grew up around parrotheads, seen JB more than a few times over the years & attended a few of the "meetings of the minds" in New Orleans. I still listen to it every once in a while, but I know the words to just about all of them.

What Is This B.S.?

I have read much outright criticism and indignation below from the "NL" Seafood Experts.

Has anyone considered that shark meat is eaten and also sold in Nicaragua by Nicaraguans. Both eating and selling are legal in Nicaragua. Selling the shark fins are legal.

Selling and eating Turtle Meat is also legal in Nicaragua.

The "NL" Political Experts are mostly against foreign governments getting involved in Nicaraguan politics.

Yet, these same "NL" Political Experts are trying to change the seafood laws of Nicaragua.

Go Figure

Miskito Alan &#174

Re: What is this B.S. ?

I agree:: The one thing Nicaraguans hate the most is Gringos coming to their country and buying a little property or taking an extended stay and all of a sudden start telling Nicaraguans how to run their own country. What kinds of laws they should have etc. Nicas are strong Nationalists and don't want or like foreign influence when it comes to the policies of their country. JMO

For the record...

I have no interest in changing Nicaraguan laws despite the inflamatory comments made by Alan.

I have stated on Nica Living that I have the utmost confidence in the Nicaraguans and the US should butt out.

BUT I will comment on practices that potentially are damaging to anyone, especially if those practices have been tried in the US (or anywhere) and failed.

Just Call It Treason - I Guess

Tom said: "I have no interest in changing Nicaraguan laws despite the inflamatory comments made by Alan."

My problem is that I do not know the definition of inflamatory. As a matter of fact, inflamatory is not even a word in the English language.

I will proceed under the asssumption that Tom really meant inflammatory and I will discuss that word which is an English word.

It sounds as though I am prepared to do a suicide bombing because I said that "shark fishing is legal in Nicaragua".

LMAO!

Miskito Alan &#174

The time spent searching for

the missing "m", etc is laughable....in fact I LMAO.

Great Post Alan.

Agreed

The USA (America) has been trying to make the laws in Nicaragua for many years and has been trying to contol Nicaragua and Nicaraguans for the same amount of time.

This USA (America) aid (interference) has forced the Nicaraguans to become strong Nationalists.

shark meat is available in

shark meat is available in almost every large supermarket here in Canada selling fresh fish products. Source? Probably not Canadian, even though there are some non commercially viable cold water species in the St.Lawrence River, and Artic waters.

Huh?

Alan, are you talking to me?

I have never claimed to be a NL Political Expert or anything else....but all the world over, sharks are being killed just for their fins. This is gonna f**k up the natural ecosystems. You can not just go killing everything in the ocean. You know who is buying these fins and why and it is BS.

I am not trying to change the seafood laws in Nicaragua. But I do feel strongly that reasonable people need to take a look at how much can be harvested from the ocean and act accordingly.

Last time I was on Little Island, all the lobster traps were pulled while waiting for the season to re-open. This kind of thinking will keep people employed. Taking all of the lobster and sharks anytime and anywhere will put and end to the lobsters, the sharks and anything else.

Legal don't make it right.

Re: huh ?

Shark fishing in Nicaragua happens to be legal, there is a market for the shark meat. It only makes sense that if you are harvesting the shark for it's meat you also utilize anything else you can from the shark and that would be the fins and maybe the jaws.

Hogs?

Whats that saying about the hog business?

We sell everything but the squeal.

Miskito Alan &#174

Nope - Everyone

I was talking to everybody on "NL".

Nobody in their right mind, which includes me in my not so right mind, would support any senseless slaughter of shark to only harvest the fins to sell them.

My point is that everyone should look at the total picture and understand that people do kill shark for food for them and their familes to eat and sell the remaining meat to the local markets and do sell the "shark fin".

"Tom" said: "but all the world over, sharks are being killed just for their fins."

I can not stop senseless killing of sharks all over the world. I can address shark issues only in Nicaragua.

"Tom" addressed the issue of the "veda" for the lobster and this "veda" also includes shrimp. This "veda" is now in its 4th year. MEDEPESCA does great work with this "veda" in regulating the seafood of Nicaragua which also includes their great work in regulating all species of fish and turtle.

MEDEPESCA is very strict concerning the seafood laws of Nicaragua. MEDEPESCA employs trained and degreed marine biologists to maintain the high standards of the seafood industry of Nicaragua.

if

it was up to starving and living i would even eat the fin. i do agree it is way too easy to judge when you live a good life but given the same person in less fortunate situation and you would do the same.

Criticism is easy

when you are not poverty stricken and trying to make a living and put food on the table. I agree with the desire to save the environment but it's too easy to look at the issue using middle class, first-world eyes.

Good points by Alan and Zenpilgrim

I'm all for eating what you catch for nutrition, but I'm not for feeding an industry based on superstition, ignorance, and greed. People who buy exotic animal parts thinking it's a natural vitamin V (much of the exotic species body part industry) would be better off buying a blow up doll or a subscription to Hustler.

I agree with John.

I agree with John. Especially about the blow up doll and Hustler. I bought my friend a blow up doll for his birthday. I inflated it and tied it to his chair. He said he used it once and then tried to take it back.

Asian aphrodisiac market

They think that they need the bear gall, rhino horn etc. before they can rape the blow-up doll.

As far as sharks are concered I would rather be the eater than the eatee and I prefer shark meat to many other fish. They do compete for us for the marine food supply but they certainly shouldn't be hunted for fins alone.

Voice of Experience?

I thought you stopped buying "blow-up dolls" and cancelled your subscriptions to "Hustler" & "Penthouse".

Miskito Alan &#174

Must be

My blow up doll and I were just enjoying a bowl of shark fin soup for lunch yesterday, when the mailman came with the latest issue of Hustler.

I read on the internet (so it HAS to be true) that shark fin can fetch US$880 a pound in Hong Kong.

Apply all that the drug trade logic about supply and demand, and go from there.

Disgusting!

We are eradicating the top level predators at an alarming rate for their fins. Sharks reproduce at a very low rate and can not continue to exist with this kind of nonsense killing.

??????

i was wondering what the fins are used for?

Re: ?????

They sell them to the Chino's. The Chino's make different kinds of medicines and aphrodisiacs. They do the same thing with Sea Horses.

thanks

i was just wondering. whis was a new one for me my wife andi spent our honeymoon at San Juan del Sur but i did see this at this time. i didnot know what they were used for.

Shark Fins:

They get around $30 a pound for them fully dried.

According to this they get

According to this they get around $70 p/pound....

shark fins

I really hope someone starts to educate the Nicas as to the horrific practices of "finning" sharks!!!!! That is a number one screw up to the marine ecosystem! I wish they would learn to farm sea turtles also!! I still love Nicaragua....but we shoould all help with conservation and the enviroment. For example, the Dominacan Republic is a beautiful place. But the people just throw trash out the windows as they do in most 3rd world countries. You don't see trash along the side of the road in Costa Rica.

Reduce the demand

Start a rumor that eating shark fin causes impotence.

it

does.
