Moving to San Juan Del SurSubmitted by none on 14 September, 2006 - 17:14.
Hello. I am moving with my partner to San Juan Del Sur in March and I am curious about feedback if anyone has any about what they would like to see as a business sprout up. I have tried to figure out online what is needed, as I am not looking to do what has already been done,I am looking to fill a void. Any input would be welcome. Thanks. Corri ( categories: )

Business?
"Corri" - What type business do you two people (you and your business-partner) have in the USA (America) now?

She is a bookeeper and I work in a restaurant at present. I have gone to school for IT and hated working in that field. We are looking for something that adds to the community, so the search is on.
Bookkeeper?
Well, I may need one of them that speaks English--but that's very part-time.
You probably were learning about Windoze or some such junk. IT is not bad as long as it is all Linux.
For San Juan
maybe a coin op laundromat, a decent cyber cafe and a supermercado targeted at the upscale gringo population
supermercado
Would there be enough business to seriously consider doing this? Are you presently living there? I am a bit of a hippie vegetarian and do like certain foods, would there be a market you think???? I am not looking to take away from other businesses either, I would like to blend and add if possible.
Thanks for the input by the way.
i am worried for you......
i don't think the expat community is large enough to support that there. but since i only have a lot there, i don't know. can someone chime in as to size of expat community? that was your target market?
i don't live there
I mostly stay around Granada and Ometepe, but each time I have visited SJDS, I've been dissapointed with the internet cafe scene there, crowded, old machines, dial up and twice the price of other places. But I certainly haven't been every where there. Maybe your IT back ground could help there. A small casino with maybe a dozen slots and a video juke box.. I think a small 6 machine coin op laundromat would work well in SJDL maybe with a small cafe thing, an idea I swiped from NL's Bobby and like FYL says I think Dortitos may be considered health food in SJDL. There is an element of the surf dude crowd that might like a smoothie or a avocado and sprout sandwhich but these are the "discount" travelers... The more established SJDL crowd seems to have a few more bucks for some little luxeries from home and it's a long way to Rivas for a little grocery shopping. I am getting close to starting a sort of natural food business in Nica soon as well,

We need a hippie vegetarian business here. I want to buy:
Unfortunately, that business would probably only have between 1 and 10 customers here.
As for SJdS, I think the only hippie vegetarian stuff you could sell was vegetarian beer and most people there:
More seriously, there used to be a restaurant in Seattle, the the Sanitary Market Building. (Yup, that really is it's name.) A friend of mine ate there a few times and they realized it was vegetarian and asked the owner why he didn't say it was a vegetarian restaurant. The owner said "It isn't a vegetarian restaurant--we just don't cook with meat."
I don't try to fake meat dishes here but I don't know what to call "meat loaf" without meat. Or TSP or tofu flavored with sage and such that makes pig eaters ask if there is sausage in it. If I needed another career I would probably open one of those "not vegetarian but we don't cook with meat" restaurants.
Going Natural
Ok..you can easily grow own spouts with simple home made table-top sprouter. Yogurt...easy...starter from already cultured batch..a few jars and the right temp. Any loaf' can be made (it is a horror though without the prepared help) from veggies, beans, rice. If you must have texture..(and I think that is the one way we can transition from "meat:".to veg)That takes alot of home grown effort...and is not satisfactory to anyone who can't make the big break. Hence my strict vegitarian children...(oh sure)....want Tofurky....artificial Italian Sausage etc., just substitutes for familiar texture, flavor and culture. All needing "industrial" production. Now...in a town that is at least 50% vegetarian...the capitol of "natural'...they have an Oyster Festival...no one makes "Voysters"...so I proposed this...and one person went off the scale ad is now experimenting. "VOYSTERS"...vegetrian oysters...? Oh my...I was making a spiel tongue in cheek ! Meat Loaf.... Fly...call it "Veetloaf". Simple....now hotdogs are a problem...you just can't fake em homemade from scratch. Yup..been through this in my own kitchen. ow....I stick to plain and off the vine..but....I do miss the fod of my youth and ...therefore....go off and wind up orally happy and tye rest of the system in agony about twice a month. It does help that I live were I am surrounded by peacefully grazing bovines...who just ..well...don't desearve anything but their peace. And...the other half of the population goes out an makes a grand sport of shooting deer, elk etcAnd talk about the one kill for the next 11 months) Just to have some boy time. Economicaly...making no sense. Fees, gas, equipment,BEER,butcher fess , cost of keeingthe meat for 11 months in a freezer that cost $$$$....no...this is life. Uh Oh I am rambling on again. It's all in the texture and flavor. Keep experimenting. The nutritinal thing of TSP and Tofu is truly great...but no having this available....wel...had to deal with the cooking.... m looking into Tofu...home saml scale system. There is a real good local'manufactur here and I am networking. Will let you know. Willow

Hippie veg
At least I know that you would come over for dinner if I cooked some not so meaty dishes *smile*
