![]() This is another view of the fortess. Not many people make it this far down river to see this historic Spanish Fortress. Just getting here was a challenge but I did not want to cross over into Costa Rica the normal way, by bus from Managua. It took almost 24 hours of boating and waiting to get here from Granada but the rum and cigars at the hotel Albergue with the evening rain made the whole trip worthwhile. ( categories: )

has a new map out on the region, and apparently you can fly La Costena from Managua to San Carlos. Contact numbers for La Costena are 263-2142 in Managua and 583-0271 in San Carlos.
The map also shows that one can travel by steam boat down the river. Did you travel this way?
Where did you stay and how were the accomodations?
Budget minded way
Catch the 16 hour ferry at Granada to san Carlos catch the first boat going down river. Some of the boat taxi's try to get you to stay at certain hotels but I wanted to stay at the Alberge and it was great. $15 per room includes breakfast with a million dollar view of the rapids
La Costena Airlines
La Costena has flown to San Carlos for as long as I can remember from my 15 years in Nica.
I think the problem that "Tom Proctor" had was that La Costena would not let him bring his frog on the airplane.
