BeansSubmitted by fyl on 5 September, 2006 - 15:19.
![]() I guess I just never thought that Ana and Carlos would end up using the new deck to dry beans from our finca. Amazing what you learn living in Nicaragua. These are the darker of the two kinds. I forget their name. The others are called, amazing as it may seem, rojo. ( categories: )

Tell the Truth
Did Carlos or Ana first think of the bean drying on the deck idea?

Carlos doesn't know beans
I'm sure you'll learn several different words for the darker bean. Maria doesn't know. Call 784 2352 and her dad will tell you the bean name, apparently he knows beans about beans.
Ana does
She just isn't here right now. She is the one in the family with the agronomy degree, not Carlos. I saw them labeled as "Esteli Beans" in the market today.
Note that she told me about five times and I just keep forgetting. Also told me there were more resistant to pests, ... Next batch will be black beans. Both of us prefer them but don't tell any of her relatives. The first time Margarita saw gallo pinto here with black beans she asked Ana why she had burned the beans.
black beans and rice
Black beans and rice = cristianos y moros
The Corn Island locals hate black beans because those were the only beans made available during the "revulution." Islanders claim they gave them indigestion.
I love black beans; grew accustomed to black beans and yellow rice from the cuban influence in Key West.
Ana the bean queen
Yeah, black beans are frijoles non grata for some reason. The anti-bean. If we can't find authentic Central American red beans here, Maria refuses to make gallopinto.
I heard of a
young Nica refugee in Costa Rica who realized things were so bad her family had to eat cattle food (black beans)
