Unbidden guests are often welcomest when they are gone.

Why are there so many 'Guests' on this site - once recently whilst all save Miskito Alan were sleeping there were 128! All web crawlers and the CIA ?

I don't mind a joke but

At 07:20 GMT today There are currently 1 user and 615 guests online.

At 07:21 There are currently 1 user and 967 guests online.

At 07.22 There are currently 1 user and 1057 guests online.

Is there a bug in the counter ? Am I really that popular ?

ps, minor point but in my long ago software writing days I'd take the trouble to write the extra line of code to check for number=1 and change 'are' to 'is'. If we get aerated about the ' we is sure to get more so about 'are' - isn't we ?

Lurkers Anonomous

I must admit that I was once a lurker, if only for a day or so. I then sought help in the Lurkers Anon support group.

Most of these people are probably looking for some entertainment, others for information and yet others for no reason at all.

That does seem like a huge amount though, 1057 guests.

Hopefully it's as good for them as it is for me.

But

According to these stats about 500 guests logged on in less than two minutes. Are there 500 Government agencies in the US interested in your tax/political affiliations etc? Perhaps so....

Perhaps so...

but I hope not!

They're Bush operatives

Stealing your liberties. Be afraid, very afraid.

Conspiracy Theory or

Enemy of the State?

Forrest Gump?

Or Snakes on a Plane?

No question about it..

it's Gump.

nothing really

just timid I would guess but courious at the same time.

plenty people know us here and we dont know them

one friend said it right...

Those that know me, know I dont care..

those that dont know me, I dont care..

Was that quote from MA or is my CRS acting up again?

I've been told that there are automated web crawlers who go out in the night to do the devil's bidding on websites all over the universe. Many of the "guests" on this site are these non-human entities.

If I tell you who told me that, I'd have to kill you.

Yep

The paranoids and clueless but your right, a majority are bots like Google, Yahoo, MSN etc.

I doubt it

There aren't that many search engines and one of their spiders would only be on there for a few seconds or minutes at the most.

If they are real people what the hell is wrong with them?

Currently 63

It would be interesting to graph the number with time but I don't have a clue if the webmaster (is that MA ??) can do that. It certainly is odd, for a biggish forum like Yachting + Boating World (the only other one I belong to)with 21500 odd Registered Users there are ususally about as many 'guests' as members on line. The IRS and other agencies will be monitoring this site but I can't see why that should produce more than two or three 'guests'.

Lurkers

Steve: You have a good point and a good question.

Lurkers are quite strange.

I had a "lurker" friend here to Puerto Cabezas awhilst back.

He was a "lurker" because he could not figure out how to join NL. I showed him how to sign-up as a member and he is now an active/participating member.

I have 3 daughters in Biloxi who lurk here quite a bit. A very funny thing happened from one daughter's lurking of a couple of weeks ago. Awhilst back, LFJW posted a picture of a beautiful kitchen which he claimed was mine in Puerto Cabezas. I immediately edited the picture to "humor catergory" in "photos". The kitchen was actually a picture of a friend's kitchen in Baltimore. My daughter's house was completely destroyed by "Katrina" in Pass Christian and she and her husband have now completed a new house. She emailed me that she was so surprised that her new kitchen looks so much like my kitchen in Puerto Cabezas. I did not immediately reply because I did not know how to break the news to her that the picture was not my kitchen. Finally, I wrote her and explained the deal.

Sometimes the "lurkers" don't have the full story without the ability to ask questions.

I AM TOO AMUSED TO COMMENT. WILLOW

'Lurkers'

Alan, They sound even more sinister than unwelcome guests. Can you access their IP addresses ? I saw + followed the kitchen post - I'm buying some land above Ostional to start moving next year and this forum has been an important factor in making that decision. No-one wants a 'little America' or a 'little Britain' but at least one can see a few folk around who would help/sympathise/pour out the rum when everything goes horribly wrong for the tenth time in a month.
