the ones who fail

NUMBER ONE RULE IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN BUSINESS IN NIC YOU AND YOU ALONE HAVE TO PHYSICALLY RUN OR SUPERVISE IT.THE MONEY CHANGES THE BEST INTENTIONED OF PEOPLE. It is very true that a lot of gringo have attempted to make a go at and left with just pieces of their shirts. I believe this came about by having to much money to start with and being careless with it and second trying to run the business from the outside. The one thing you cannot due in nic is have a business and hire locals to run it.they just do not have the sauvy or the dedication to do it or the common sense to understand that the money coming in is not for spending ,but for reinvesting back into the business. THE IDEA THE BOSS IS THE HARDEST AND LOWEST PAYED WORKER IS SOMETHING MOST OF THE PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

Yo 73,

that site is AWESOME! I haven't run across it yet and it has tons of information that I have now printed for my ever growing file.

Thank You!

Don’t yell at me

You scurred me.

I clicked on my e-mail message link and my heart almost jumped out my mouth. It’s been a while since I’ve been addressed as Yo before my name and it usually implies extreme excitement or joy.

I’m now living a very uneventful life as a community servant by divine - apparently - grace and apparently ( and unfortunately - considering I enjoyed my eventful life just fine ) softening up to it.

You surred me but I’m glad for you Yo, on the real. My pleasure in helping you out. I feel good knowing I've been able to, Boo/Hon. God bless you in all your endeavors - from the heart ( lol - I love it. Why'd you have to go and bring out my cherished twin? She was fairing just well. ;-) )

Top Secret?

What couple of questions?

What do you want to do?

A little info would help and everybody will not be talking about nothing at the same time.

Ideas vs. plans

I see no shortage of business ideas. I have lots. What I see a shortage of is plans and, beyond that, Nicaraguans that can manage a business.

I see Nicaraguans who "want a job" but I have trouble finding people here with any sort of business vision. That is, I see people who want a paycheck but not people who want a business.

Now, if you are serious (that is, you think you can actually run a business), great. But, starting a successful business means a plan based on some market research, a budget, ...

I have started enough businesses to know. Today, when people tell me that 90% of new small businesses in the US fail in the first year I am surprised it is only 90%.

Let me take your cyber idea as an example as I actually considered this here. That is, to help get one started. I have no interest in operations.

First, the market is saturated at least here in Estelí. So, if you want a piece of that market, you have to offer something better or different. You have start-up costs (computers and software, Internet connection, muebles, ...) You need a staff that knows stuff about networking, software in general, ...

Now, I would have done it all with Linux (zero software cost) with one or two servers and the workstations as thin clients. That reduces computer costs (old systems make great thin clients and will "appear" fast as programs are really running on the servers). Linux means less virus problems. Thin clients means less software to change for an upgrade. ...

But, even with all this, you need a lot of customers at $1/hour to pay the bills--much less make a profit. The only way it might work is if the "software police" show up like they did in Costa Rica and start shutting down people with stolen software.

Thank u for the comment fyl, see..

see..I've said before that I'm about to graduate as B.A and of course have my own business, I already knew about the plans, market studies, and others, I've actually elaborated a couple projects for classes in school and I'd like to make them come true someday...BUT as everyone knows, a brilliant biz once started as an IDEA and then it become a PLAN and then a biz,so...what I'm asking is a "rain of ideas" and experiences u've had with those ideas so I know what kinda biz I'd really want to have 'cause I know the market is saturated as u said also and I'm serious and kinda uneasy about this.

Thank u sooooooo much for the idea u gave,my fiance is a Comp. Engineer and he'd probably be interested on it,it's a good idea, there are some comp. centers like that in MGA.

do an internet search for . . .

do an internet search for . . . products made from recycled materials also look for keywords small-scale - developing world business - projects. If you can make something that Nicaraguans need and you don't have to import resources to do it, you'd be doing the country a huge favour. With the rising cost of exporting anything to North America, unless you're rolling in money I haven't see it to be practical. You'd be competing against Walmarts who buy it cheaper and on a grand scale from China. Even the importation of Fair Trade coffee into North America is now an area Walmart and the other megamerchandisers are looking at. If you're thinking retail in Nicaragua - energy efficiency items (UV light bulbs, water purification, solar power, solar cookers ) building solar cookers . . .

Think Out of the Box.

I agree with Arlington and do something that not everybody else is doing in Nicaragua.

Do something different.

Internet cafes are even closing on the Atlantic Coast because of too much competition.

Miskito Alan &#174

"Think" being the operative word!

Regardless of what business you persue I've always found that the businesses I've had that were most successful were those that I enjoyed. If you don't enjoy the business you're either going to kill it or it's going to kill you. What is it that you enjoy and are good at that is marketable and/or you can make marketable? Is there something you do/make that friends have said "You should get paid for this!"? My godfather always said "you're only best at what your good at." Find a need and fill it, create a need and fill it or "think" outside the box and come up with something "novel." Who would have thought that five million Americans needed a one cent beach stone from Mexico in a small cardboard box and would pay five bucks for it?

Pura Nica, Bobby

You got that right

Truer words were never spoken. Hmm . . . a small piece of authentic rusting Nicaraguan zinc in every US living room . . .

actually no one needed a pet rock ; )

actually no one needed a pet rock ; ) some people get wants and needs mixed up. There's a tool on the internet selling other tools virtual realestate. That's right, someone can buy my virtual house on my virtual street. One day maybe they take my virtual dog for a walk. Virtual idiots.

http://secondlife.com/ and there are others ; )

Yeah, something different

like a beer store. (You like that idea, Alan?)

Of course I'm not talking anything local. You could buy product from Panama or even farther south, bring in some stuff from South America, maybe some European ones, how 'bout homebrew products like malts and hops from the States.

Ideally, you'd be targeting the gringo and upper class Nica. US Embassy says there's more than 10,000 of us gringos here. Locate your store midway between Managua, Granada and San Juan del Sur. Rents in Nandaime are still very affordable.

Advertise like the dickens to us, and we'll come out of the woodwork for a real good beer. Restaurants would be another customer wanting specialty beers. Have cases available so we can stock up ('course a case doesn't last very long, does it?)

Just a thought, anyway. I keep hoping somebody does this, as I would love to get Roger some Bert Grant's Perfect Porter!

that's thinking inside the box isn't it ; )

that's thinking inside the box isn't it ; )

Overcome one obstacle

If the Costa Rican bottled Heinekin available in Nicaragua is any indication, gringos will not tolerate such beer. You'd have to skip that and get good stuff overnighted regularly from the source. LFJW can work on the refrigeration part to keep it fresh.

business ideas

Many thanks to the contributors for their wisdom in answering Taty. I've been speaking with her quite a lot recently about coming to Nica and starting up one or more businesses. I started and operated 2 businesses in Phoenix, Arizona for over 20 years and I'm looking forward to doing the same thing in Nica. I'm not so much interested in making a living for myself as I am making a living for a few folks in Nica and giving something back to society. That may sound like a liberal talking, but I profess to be a conservative. I just don't want to plop my butt down and waste away, preferring to put some of my expertise to work helping others who may not have a shot like I had.

Taty was trying to get some ideas from you folks about what would be viable there. I have many ideas, but until I get there and look around, I won't know whether they'll work. I'm personally not interested in a brick and mortar retail business, but more in the service or light manufacturing industry area. The tax break for dealing with tourism is very attractive.

I have given Taty a list of things that interest me and have asked her to consider things that she would be interested in. I don't have all the money in the world, but I have a little to invest in a worthwhile venture.

Thanks for listening, Richard

A good business:

I am sure there are some good ones out there but I have also seen a few Gringos go home without the shirt on their backs. It's a tough place to open a business.

Gordo

That may be true but I have not seen a single motivate and dedicated person fail in Nicaragua either.

Re Gordo:

I have seen lots of motivated and dedicated people who invested $$$$ in a Nicaraguan buisness and failed to make it.The problem was more $$$$ going out than coming in. It takes alot more than motivation and dedication to make it in a business.

Dear M.B.S or is it B.A

Know the culture, be from there, "mix with it" ... see, if you want dollars, stay north of the Rio Grande, 'cause all we got here are stones.

all we got here are stones

That isn't quite the way I'm lookin' at it. I'm not interested in selling anything to Nicas who are too poor to buy. I'm interested in helping those who don't have the means to help themselves by fronting raw materials and or equipment to help them begin. As someone else said on NL, they haven't seen any Nicas who have the capability of running a business. That doesn't mean that they aren't willing to work hard and learn if they had a mentor. The capability to produce products for sale to the world already exist in Nica, it just has to be exploited by someone who knows how to do it. Again, I don't know all the answers, but I plan to have some fun in the next few years.

Thanks for reading, Richard.

Richard you have

the exactly right attitude, get your butt on down here when ya' can, and pitch right in, feeling good when you do good cannot be bought with money.

It has to be done the oldfashoned way. You have to EARN it.

Lyin' Farmer John Wayne

One example of what happens

when you front the raw materials and give an example to follow http://www.nicaliving.com/node/6076 I hope it doesn't always have to end that way.

Start a brewery

making 'real beer made from beer' this would attract Limeys who currently go to the Costa Brava. Brits are famous for getting drunk and terrorising the locals so site the 'Brewery Tap' in the worst part of Managua (someone else can open a Curry House, essential after the tenth pint). Result

1. Huge consumption of locally brewed beer, therefore some decent beer available for the rest of us

2. High death rate among Nica and Brit thugs resulting in improvements in Managua and the Costa Brava

3. Excellent TV material from punches up to replace current incredibly boring quiz games, soaps, etc.

4. After all the local and imported thugs have done themselves in we still have a brewery and a curry house

It’s true.

Most Nicas enjoy modest labor work.

Nicas just don’t adopt others’ dreams well.

I advise you vist Nicaragua churches, non-profit or government organizations in areas you are interested in and let them guide you to where your help may be of most assistance and then maybe you can adopt a Nica’s dream, and help it come true and quite possibly learn new things if helping to make dreams come true and/or learning new things are some of your interests.
