Jorge you bad bad boy
that was such a straight-faced outright untruth, I just had to smile. Right up there with WMD and Mission Accomplished.
The dead-pan comedy hall of fame can add another maestro to the honor roll.
well done. Tony X Robins, Jinotega

Really? Dying every day?
Hi Jorge!
I just returned from 8 weeks there as of Sunday night and have staff and volunteers there all the time. I did not hear of a single death. Can you point me to some sources of this? I really am interested...I like to keep aprised of things like this.
Thanks so much.

kitchen fat fires and spills
have been the number one cause of house fires and in-home injuries in the US and many other countries for countless years.
Tourists that cook their own food here should be made aware that Nicaraguan oil gets just as hot as US oil and reminded that Nicaraguan candles can set homes on fire as easily as they do US homes.
Sounds as useless as that warning on cigarette boxes. Thats why I thought you were joking.

Danger?
Sorry, guess I am not understanding why it is not 'safe'. Yes there are power outages and water outages but most have candles, lanterns and water storage. To me this is not a safety issue but one of comfort level of a person.

Power supply
This is a good one and effects all of us. As we all light up our generators and bite the bullet, one must think on renewable energy like wind gereation or re do the old gas gen set to convert the carb to use Liquid gas. (alot cheaper than gasoline, cleaner burning and safer)
A friend of mine (and member of this group)has just purchased a wind mill and am excited to learn on how it is going to help his situation as he lives on the pacific coast and has no power from 7am to 2PM. (Daily) He wants to get off the grid altogether. Will keep you posted on his developments and the conversion kits.

Electric and Water Shortages
Hola Henry, Heed the Nica. Spanish Schools's advise.
After a week long of visiting with our family, my wife just came back from Leon, Nic. on 8/22.
During that week in Leon, there were electrical black-outs and water shortages, almost daily and lasting up to 8 Hrs. and without any warning.
Due to the Nica. Govt. problems with its electrical distribuitor Union Fenosa, the situation in Nica. may get worst before it gets any better.

Big Deal
Sorry...if you don't want an "experience".Stay Home......Wow...power outage.....whoopie dip......In USA WHEN THAT OCCURS IT IS A MAJOR CRISIS...Anywhere else..the people know how to cope. Spoiled people freak. Willow.....she who doesn't freak !~when the lights go out.......
Opinion
One sentence from your link:
"The Spanish schools represented in this website, and their family homestays, have experience dealing with these kinds of crisis situations and may be able to offer adequate service despite the crisis."
I think that the use of the term "crisis situations" is a serious exaggeration.
The people that live here know how to handle power outages through the use of flashlights and kerosene lanterns and private light generators.
The people know where to buy bottled drinking water and where to find bathing & washing water.
Gross Exaggeration!

Inconveniences
Hola Alan.. I think your response is genenrous. I would have said...excuse me ? What do you expect ??? Goodness..there are blackouts of power all over USA.....yearly. OK....want an entourage to prevent any inconvenience ? I think the spoiled and undereducated lazy folks need not keep asking inane questions. OK......It drives me nuts.... Ok I am a snob..of incoveniences. My daughter was in a hurricane in Mexico.....she was a brat....I am dissapoiunted that my offspirng was so spoiled and could not just get over the inconvenience. Hello.....I am just getting the point here...and am tired of being the strong one. Also that I can live without a McDonalds. No power...Oh gee...how awful !!! No friozen dinners...gee.how inconvenient. I am so glad I lived in the "third world" early on in my life... People now think I am nuts "HERE"...good....(including my so called family). Maybe ...just ,maybe...this old woman will make it. Willow
Keep in mind as well
that the problems aren't everywhere. Here in Jinotepe, we haven't had any loss of power at all. For the past week or so they have been shutting our water off, but it's only for a few hours and it usually happens around 2am or so.
Crisis situation
Thank you Miskito Alan. I like the way you said it out: Gross exageration of the current situation in Nicaragua. What appears to be very consistently honest, nonetheless, is that the people running the referred site/schools are discouraging potential students to go to study Spanish with them. Sounds to me, it has to be very bad down there.
Are you now in Nicaragua? While talking to a bunch of friends on the possibility of going to Nicaragua, we decided to do a quick web search for a better planning of the trip. It would be very helpful to find out opinions from people actually living there. is this your case?
