Isn't oil drilling bad for the environment?Submitted by Former NL Member on 24 August, 2006 - 09:53.
In regional news, Venezuela seeks to sell more oil to China, buy Chinese made oil tankers, and make a "mulit-polar" world. I have no comment at all on the story but it made me think of something. There's nary a comment about Venezuela drilling for oil and shipping it on tankers, and the potential devastation to the environment that could result from an accident. No one seems at all concerned with Venezuela, or even the Middle East, or Russia (now the #1 oil exporter in the world) harming native plant and animal species by drilling. But let America attempt to tap the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (the operaton would be an infinitesmal dot on the huge land area) or drill off the coast of the US, and that's bad. ( categories: )

Funny
Funny, but I always oil was Part of the environment........I mean you do take it from the earth, dont you? Its already just sitting there naturally, isnt it?
I know this sounds simplistic but my point is that how it is handled is where the problem lies. There have been many improvements in the handling and transportation of oil since the Exxon Valdiz incident.
The environmental industry (and it is an industry)will tell you oil bad methanol good, and it would be great to get off of gasoline consumption so dont get me wrong. However Oil is used in so many products that we will be pumping it until it has all been pumped.
So lets start pumping it again in the U.S. and leave the middleast to its own demise.
Oil
The tankers are all double hulled now since that accident.
One of these days they will find a cheaper way to turn ocean water into hydrogen, 'til then we will use a lot of oil.
I saw a study where they included all the costs of fertilizer and pesticides used in the production of ethanol and if there were no government subsidies it would cost quite a bit more than gasoline. I imagine if they start making all that corn into ethanol the price of meat, beef in particular will have to go up too.
Brazil makes more than anyone else but they use sugarcane. That might work better but you would still have the fertilizer and insecticide cost.
Problems
The problem with oil is that pumping it out of the ground and burning it adds a lot of extra carbon into our environment and it appears that this is causing the planet to retain more heat.
The problem with ethanol is that it takes a lot of energy to make it and often this energy source is natural gas which is, like oil, contributing to additional carbon in our environment.
In short, fossil fuels are bad.
The most promising method of producing ethanol is biological in nature. Scientists are developing bacteria that basically eat the corn stalks (and other disposable greens) and excrete ethanol or hydrogen. Very little external energy required. Ethanol generating plants are being built today that will do this.

gee
i always thought thats how booze was made
Booze and fuel
Buddy I knew one of the 1920's moonshiners (yes I am old enough to have known them) Cars,at least the old ones, would run on Booze. He recounted more than one story where he was chased back into the hills of Tenn. so far he had to burn half his load just to get back to town. knowledge is power
Solution
Do like "fyl" and become a vegetarian.
Don't eat beef or pork.
Just eat the seafood that eats "spilled oil".
The price of ethanol would come down with no demand for corn.
Of course, the vegetarians will have to stop eating corn on the cob & Del Monte's Creamed Corn too.

careful...
Creamed corn is about the only canned veggie I'll eat! Ok, sauerkraut too and considering what the "gas" that produces, how come German ingenuity hasn't designed a 'kraut-powered vehicle?
Been there, done that
Thanks to Blue Miskitu, it's been done with gallopinto.

Canned?
I've seen you love Canned Victoria/Tona too.

doh!
Forgot mis novias are "veggies" too!
no!
if they drill on my property, it is especially good. see i get a rental, and if they hit, i get royalties.
Isn't oil drilling bad for the environment? no, very good for my environment!
I'm with you Judge
Nothing would make me happier than for them to start pumping the two wells that have been capped on our property for the last 20 years.
Oil
See how those Texans think?
In the 60's and 70's.....
there were tv commercials with a beautiful red head wearing hot pants who said, "don't have an oil well? get one!" cue company name.
that's probably why i am the way i am today. thank you, capitalism. the only ism that just is, ken ye!
well back then and today . . .
if you drive a 400 HP american-designed car you pretty much need your own oil well and refinery to keep gas in the thing. The ingenuity of Ford, Chrysler and GM is limitless . . . Mustang, Charger, Camaro . . . the holy trinity of guzzlers, brought back into production while gas goes over $4.50 a gallon in Canada and they ponder their demise while Toyoto and Honda leave these dinos in the dust. Get your own oil-well indeed ; (

That's one of the good reasons to ride a motorcycle. Fuel efficiency.
I really miss
my motorcycle great on gas and a thriller for a lady on the back.
But to go back to it now with all the cars on the roads here in PC. I think would be suicide.

motorbikes.
That is strange, that there are not more scooters in Nicaragua. There are thousands of small motorcycles running around in the Dominican Republic. Lots of rentals companies and they are even used as taxies.
If you are stupid enough to drive a car at night it is a lot of fun trying to decide if the one light coming toward you is a motor bike or an automobile with one headlight.
one headlight
I don't know about other Central American countrys, but here in Honduras one headlight always makes you wonder which side to go past on since they always seem to be in the middle of the road.
knowledge is power
Try rush hour
in Miami...
We're climate challenged here . . .
We're climate challenged here . . . with about 120 decent biking days. How does a bike do mpg? I'm surprised scooters haven't taken off in Nicaragua like they have done in so much of the develping world.

I grew up in Chicago and then lived in Wisconsin for 5 years. You have about the same amount of time to ride there and the rest of the time it's in a barn being stored with the battery removed to avoid freezing.
Scooters in Nica is 1 of the many ideas I have for the near future. Shhh, don't tell anyone.
Scoots
We had two "Scoots" on NL; but, no more "Scoots" here.
Puerto Cabezas does have quite a few new "scoots" running the streets at 50cc & 90cc which cost new around U$1,000 in MGA.

Honda or Vespa?
Honda or Vespa?
Try Piaggio
They sell those cool 3-wheel motos used as taxis, delivery vehicles, and utility vehicles.
Vespa is a Piaggio brand . . .
Vespa is a Piaggio brand . . . those other ones are very cool and practical too. Nice stuff. Is there a dealer in Managua?
There has to be
There are lots of them around.
cool. I didn't notice them before . . .
cool. I didn't notice them before . . . I'll have to open my eyes.
Maybe they're not everywhere
I know they use them around the Carreterra Masaya for taxis (off the highway), and surely they use them elsewhere. I'd love to tool around in one.
Any idea
what they cost?
Piaggio Ape (3-wheeler)
About L4-7,000 in Italy.

Scooters MGA U$1,000

Foiled
again!
don't worry . . .
no one takes any good ideas from these threads seriously ; )
20 cents per gallon
back then.
price of gas
I've held off long enough......someone out there can do the research, I don't have time. My thought is that the price of gas today when adjusted for inflation is either the same or actually cheaper than it was in the 60's ($.20/gal). How does it look as a percentage of disposable income today compared to yesteryear? Perspective....and, of course, I was spending $4/gal in Italy in the 80's so I'm sort of deadened to the current impact.
There you go again...
...trying to throw facts into the mix! ;~)
