SJDS hi-rise

I thought that I had a photo of it when it was only 3 stories high last Christmas but I can't find it. This is their Website I think:

http://www.hotelplayasanjuan.com/4.html

sore thumb

Supposedly the deal with this project was that it was only suppose to be a 3 story project, or that was all that was approved. They built 5 instead.

This project is a seriously large sore thumb for SJDS in my opinion. There is a website for this condominium project but I do not recall the adress.

In an unrelated story I had a long chat with the lady that runs the little shop in the very front of the picture. Very nice lady. She sells all the kneclaces and bracelets. She has a 10 year lease on that space from the Alc. something like 300 cords a month thats 100 rent, 100 taxes and 100 something else which I cant recall. less than $20 a month, those condos are going for something like $250,000 and up to buy

With luck

they only engineered for a 3 story building and it will just fall down on its own.

Look at the footings

I've seen this building being constructed. They used an old concrete wall to bolt the structure onto about 10' of the ground. So don't get to used to looking at it i doubt it could survive even a minor terro-motto.

Yikes

I'd hate to see what the wind will do to it.

it's too bad some people just don't understand . . .

right sized, blending in, scale . . . it's so sad. Makes you wonder about the process . . . if you build five story here, on an approved three story, you're tearing it down on your own nickel. It's the height of arrogance and exploitation to flaunt your indifference to the rules.

They tore down paradise and put up a parking lot . . . sorry Jim - jumpin' in like this with a Canadian lyric.

name dropping

"Big Yellow Taxi": They paved paradise And put up a parking lot With a pink hotel, a boutique And a swinging hot spot

Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got Till it's gone They paved paradise And put up a parking lot

(the pink hotel is supposed to be the Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki Beach.)

I didn't know Joni Mitchell personally but I used to go diving in the Gulf Island off of Sydney, BC with a friend of mine who had classes with Joni at the University of Edmonton. I liked her "Carey" but my favorite was "Both Sides, Now"

Rows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I've looked at clouds from both sides now

From up and down, and still somehow It's cloud illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all

didn't know

that the song was about that hotel. pretty place. too bad she didn't buy the property and leave it pristine. called putting her money where her mouth is. you should have to buy property if you want to control it. eg, restrictive covenants.

Doubts

For a bit over 3 years in college, I lived up the street from the pink palace. I was required to complete internships all over the tourism industry - I declined the pink palace for the Ilikai. TV trivia: the Ilikai is best known for the intro to Hawaii 5-0 - it is on a balcony of the hotel that McGarrett stands as the shot zooms in. Best "little known fact" -- Gilligan et al set sail for a 3-hour cruise from the marina attached to the Ilikai, known as the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor and situated in the Ala Wai Basin.

Other obscure bits of Hawaiiana -- the pink palace was the second "major" hotel on Waikiki beach. It was preceded by the Moana hotel -- which still exists and is a gem -- in 1901. The pink palace opened in 1927 -- same ambition/drive behind both properties -- the Matson shipping company.

The pink palace has been under japanese control since I was a kiddo -- Sheraton has been managing the property for years and years.

i am fine with the lyrics....

but the liberal lyrics made me think of a liberal movie, if you build it, they will come, field of dreams. they even had a vw bus. i never understood the movie.

of course i would rather sjds remain a sleepy little fishing village. however, i don't own it all, so i can't control how property owners alienate their property.

Field of Dreams

I have always enjoyed ScFi but that was just low grade Fantasy. What do you expect from a guy who likes to dance with wolves. Even in Water World he almost unrealistically passed up some fine nooky.

Field of Dreams

It's all about baseball, and mainly referring to the Chicago Blacksox team that threw the World Series. Kind of about following your dreams and how important family is too, I think. I just cared about the baseball part, believe it or not.

Wasn't it about a son . . .

Wasn't it about a son . . . who never got to say good by to his father . . . closure, you know.

If you build it "he" will come . . . his father.

I figgered

you would at least jump him for screwing up Joni's lyric.

different visions of paradise

. . . so liberals are the only ones that believe in community spirit, greenspace paradise and consideration for the general wellbeing and in a conservative utopia there are parking lots surrounded by fences, occupied by people who don't care what the next guy does. Now I remember why I'm a liberal ; )

Green spaces

You might remember hearing about Governor of New York Teddy Roosevelt when he wrote to a friend, 'I have always been fond of the West African proverb: "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." ' " And I'm sure you heard about him and his Roughriders when they rode up San Juan Hill in Cuba in 1898 but maybe you didn't know that he was a strong conservationist long before it became popular with the liberals. The Republican Pres. Teddy not only still hangs out on Mt. Rushmore but there is a Teddy Roosevelt National Park.

http://www.teddyroosevelt.com/

where did i say that?

conservatives, libertarians, and moderates often buy property, either individually or collectively and put in green spaces, heck, cnn rated where i live #3 of the best places to live in the usa. and you know what cnn stands for? clinton network news. i care what the guy next door does, but i am not going to take away his freedom or try to strip him of his property rights. is that fair?

you said the lyrics were liberal ; )

welll I like John Stuart Mill on Liberty . . . swing your arms like you just don't care (but don't swing so far as to negatively affect others) I'm paraphrasing of course . . . take that as far as you like . . . your right to a factory adjoining my backyard would be swinging too close in my mind . . . I like zoning regulations otheriwse it wouldn't be the Mall of America it'd be America The Mall. ; ) I'm not sure what you're doing in the northeast that is being restricted or even whether it should be. Zoning is a mess everywhere I can see otherwise north America wouldn't be in the hideous state it is.

the people's republic of "i won't let you...

build a parking lot" is liberal. it takes away individual rights and gives them to fidel or ortega or stalin or mao. and you would come for us, take away our guns and put us in re-education camps. no thank you.

that isn't what I said or meant, come on . . .

are your neighbours collectively Mao, Stalin or Ortega minded . . . you oughta move and soon ; ) my neighbours are way more reasonable . . . though we won't situate a parking lot, factory, strip club, crack house, opium den or uranium reprocessing factory between our houses regardless of individual rights. I hope that doesn't make us bad people. ; )

you are a reasonable man.....

but, there are constitutional protections for individuals in the bill of rights. like the 5th amendment, nor shall private property be taken without just compensation. if you take my property right, that is where i build on my property, you should pay me. libs want to control where i build, but not pay me for my land. they want there cake and eat it too. right here in the land of the free, home of the brave.

as to crack houses, opium dens, etc, there are nuisance laws.

These are a few

of my favorite things..

coke

alert

Only mixed with

FDC.

FDC, And then I don't feel so bad?

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens Brown paper packages tied up with strings These are a few of my favorite things

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings These are a few of my favorite things

Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes Silver white winters that melt into springs These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog bites When the bee stings When I'm feeling sad I simply remember my favorite things And then I don't feel so bad

Ahhhh

for a second there I was sitting in front of the fireplace with a cup of eggnog, brandy included of course.

Then I realized it was 94 degrees outside and ready to rain, again.

Government gone too far

Our local government just decided I wasn't allowed to build my airplane in the privacy of my own home. I figure they owe me at least the value of the completed airplane as compensation. Jim, too bad you're not a Florida lawyer.

Huh?

Is it a flat-out ban or do you have to grease the skids (e.g., get a permit)??

OTOH, shouldn't you get special dispensation since you're "never going to finish (building) it"?? [MA's words, not mine!!]

Welcome back, Marty

It states, as part of all districts zoned residential, you cannot repair or construct an aircraft or airboat on such property. I can store it in an enclosed garage, but that's IT. Period. End of story. No exceptions. Since mine is half built, that's that. I do need (and have) a zoning exception to operate a business from my residence, but this has no such possiblilites.

It's believed to be the only such zoning requirement in the US. The EAA (www.eaa.org) is getting involved to knock some sense into the city. I've involved the AOPA (www.aopa.org). My two favorite political action committees. See, the little guy does have a voice. I don't envision winning, though.

I thought . . .

I thought . . . you could build a hypothetical plane anywhere ; )

A hypothetical plane?

Is that like an astral plane?

The guy targeted in this claims you can't even fold up a paper airplane, the way it's worded. I wouldn't go so far as to claim that, but a "vehicle capable of aerial navigation" is whatever the city says it is.

can you bring liquids on an astral plane?

can you bring liquids on an astral plane? can you fly them at a profit with better fuel economy . . . I have a flying carpet from Iran but, I can't get it serviced anymore, so there it lies dusting.

The only liquid allowed is FDC.

But you have to consume it to arrive there.

Wow, between Dream Weaver and Magic Carpet Ride, Jim should be singing his heart out!

You wanna know something

funny, i can't carry a tune to save my life. tuneage can evoke memories.

departing at 2:30 PM Gate 2 Astral Plane

where's the inflight lyrico Jim ; )

i'm leaving on a jet plane

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go I'm standin' here outside your door I hate to wake you up to say goodbye But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn The taxi's waitin', he's blowin' his horn Already I'm so lonesome I could die So kiss me and smile for me Tell me that you'll wait for me Hold me like you'll never let me go 'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane I don't know when I'll be back again Oh, babe, I hate to go I'm ... There's so many times I've let you down So many times I've played around I'll tell you now, they don't mean a thing Every place I go, I think of you Every song I sing, I sing for you When I come back I'll wear your wedding ring So kiss me and smile for me Tell me that you'll wait for me Hold me like you'll never let me go 'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane I don't know when I'll be back again Oh, babe, I hate to go Now the time has come to leave you One more time, oh, let me kiss you And close your eyes and I'll be on my way Dream about the days to come When I won't have to leave alone About the times that I won't have to say ... Oh, kiss me and smile for me Tell me that you'll wait for me Hold me like you'll never let me go 'Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane I don't know when I'll be back again Oh, babe, I hate to go And I'm leaving on a jet plane I don't know when I'll be back again Oh, babe, I hate to go

the people's republic of whatcom county is

on the west coast. the draft dodgers of the late 60's early 70's went to canada, this county is adjacent to canada. therefore, very liberal. my property has a beautiful salmon spawning creek on it. they want to push back how far away from the creek i can build. but they don't own it. i love the beautiful creek. would not harm it. it is the huge football size trawlers that scoop up salmon by the millions, but i can't enjoy my property. america, land of the free home of the brave.

is this a new photo?

when I was in town in January, I thought there were 4 or 5 stories already up, and except for the roof portion, it doesn't look much different in this photo than back then. I'd have thought it would be much further along... Are there any comments by people in town about this, like pro/con?

it's a fairly recent

photo. I was in SJDS around the first of August, just a few weeks ago. I was in SJDS in late March and it looks pretty much the same now. ] There were people working on it this last trip...

Does anyone know

Does anyone know who is doing the building and/or it's eventual purpose ?

i hate to say it., but

it's mike and jane from hotel isabella, and from what jane told me, the building is going to be condos. i love jane, but had a hard time holding my tongue, as i was disappointed they were putting this up.

how things have changed in the 8 years since i first visited and fell in love with this town. if fast food comes, i don't know if i'll be able to live there.

I guess you wont be living in SJDS?

Subway is coming to SJDS : Subway Nicaragua

No harm done

I enjoy the occasional Subway and they are a lot better value for your dollar (or Cordoba) than some of the other chains like Starbucks.

dear god.

this is a stake through my heart. i've never eaten in one of them, and i sure won't start down there. shame on estrella - it's a lovely building, and with that abomination going in, it will wreck its ambience. just my opinion, of course.

i hope it fails.

gimme my gallo pinto, camarones cocteles, y victoria, por favor. i'm having gallo pinto for lunch today.

why does sameness have to spread . . .

why does sameness have to spread . . . like a damn virus

they could at least make it in español . . . tan arrogante, ningún respeto para la cultura local. qué una sorpresa que esa globalización crea a enemigos

the problem is still the same

in any language.

yeah I agree . . .

I'm just practising my spanish and it sounds better to my ear (not Subway, my comment . . . Subway's a blight in any language so a 50/50 message is my compromise ; ) Actually franchise is the blight on the language . . . I think it means lack of imagination ; )

YES! thank you.

I absolutely agree with that assessment of lack of imagination.

I decided to go looking for a photo of Hotel Estrella, and found one in a bunch by Caesar at this link (by the way, the rest of his photos are terrific):

http://www.pbase.com/sanjuandelsur/image/50644059

As plain and perhaps in need of repair as the building is, I cannot believe a fast food blight will improve it. But perhaps the owners decided it was a better way to go. But it's so beautiful just the way it is.

Where I live in no. NH, I am seeing more and more of a similar creeping blight - I came here in 1972, when the town I work in had one traffic light. It now has something like 8, the streets are clogged with cars, and I have to find back roads to get home. All anyone can seem to build are chainstores, and it's looking like So. NH, aka Northern Massachusetts (sorry, Richard). Home Depot put up a store, so Lowe's had to build one - right next door.

Last year, a non chain seafood restaurant owner died, and his wife sold the restaurant plus the land next to it (that housed a superb microbrewery) to a Walgreens. And this town already has 5 or so drugstores - but only one supermarket. Two locally owned unique businesses went down the tubes. The microbrewer hasn't been able to find a suitable place, so that's gone, probably for good - he'd just won awards for his beer when he got word he had to be out.

This is a sore subject for me, if it's not already obvious.....I'll try to shut up and go back to work.

we don't get what we deserve . . .

we don't get what we deserve . . . we get what they offer us . . . and that's the lowest common denominator for the lowest price produced by the lowest wage for the greatest profit to the sorriest end. Treated like pigs at a trough, fed like pigs at a trough, led to war like pigs at a trough . . . the alternative would never lead to the pooled, accumulated wealth of corporations so we don't stand a chance against them. Some culture . . . : (

What's next?

Now you are going to run down corporations? Corporations are stockholder owned. your next door neighbor may be a part owner of that corporation.

Arcata is an ultra liberal town near me where they are noted for their narrow minded knee jerk liberal ideas. When South Africa was in the news a few years ago the Arcata city council asked everyone to sell any stock that they owned in companies that did business in S. Africa. Duh? Maybe someone should point out that when you sell your stock it just changes hands. It doesn't hurt the corporation.

Actually some corporations are so big and have branches in so many countries that I wouldn't be surprised if some of their employees didn't start claiming citizenship in their corporation. Maybe the company should start issueing passports.
