The Jet fighters Nicaragua never got

This picture was taken by me at Havana's Museo del Aire last May of a Czechoslovakian made L-39 of the Cuban Fuerza Aerea Revolucionaria (FAR). In the 1980's, the Nicaraguan EPS was supposed to become equipped with Eastern Bloc jets, however, they never arrived in Nicaragua.

All the time there were persistent rumours that Nicaragua was short of receiving MiG-21 fighters from Cuba or the USSR. In the event, this never happened, even if Libya attempted to deliver jet fighters. After one of the three Libyan Arab Republic Air Force (LARAF) Ilushin IL-76 transports experienced problems while crossing the Atlantic, the whole formation (three IL-76's and one C-130) landed in Manaus, Brazil, on 21 April 1983. While their cargo was officially declared as medical supplies, they were carrying the first of 17 Aero L-39 Albatross jets destined for FAS, together with arms and parachutes. According to FAS Colonel Ricardo Wheelock Roman, the Sandinista Command had no previous knowledge of this shipment, but the Brazilians decided to impound the cargo before allowing the cargo aircraft to return to Libya.

Soviet Relic Becomes Capitalist’s Toy

These old L-39s are quite the rage with wealthy collectors. Check out this article in today's (Aug 15) NY Times:

Name?

Why would one name such a machine Albatross?

Cause they

never learned "the rime of the ancient mariner".

Was that a...

Maiden reference here on N.L.?

Why?

It's a graceful and beautiful bird. The British are famous for using hideous bird names like skua and gannet. The L-39 is a Czech trainer, by the way, not designed to be a combat aircraft but could be armed if you really wanted to.

anyone know of the plane in the park "Las piedritas"

Does anyone know of the plane that used to be in the park "las piedritas"??? I remember it was an old WWII era single fighter prop plane.

Got a picture?

Check the catrachowings site. Just knowing history it's probably a P-51 if it's a WWII fighter.

no picture John...

or a P-47 thunderbolt...I was so young I don't really remember that well. That Catrachowings website is great though.
