scamSubmitted by Huehuete Bob on 26 July, 2006 - 11:53.
Here is an example of a scam. We went to the Catastro to register our truck for new plates. Some guy "lawyer" sat next to my driver and starts looking at our papers and he and my driver are talking for about 10 minutes. Then the "lawyer" tells us that the title went through 3 people so we would have to pay 3% instead of the 1% for registration. But he could fix it for 800 cordobas. Well we went to our lawyer just to check it out and for free he told us that this was untrue and that we were being scammed. This does happen all the time. Another example...I went to have my wheels aligned and the mechanic said I needed to replace most of the front end. As proof he shook the wheels and they wobbled all over the place. Little did he know that I knew of this scam. The wheels normally wobble if shaken when they are off the ground. On the ground the slack in the suspension is taken up and it is quite normal. Most owners not knowing this would be very intimidated though. ( categories: )

No country can be really well prepared for modern war unless it is governed by a tyrant, at the head of a highly trained and perfectly obedient bureaucracy. |

Scam
Another scam to watch out for is the one where an somewhat innocent looking traveling gringo shows up at your house & drinks all your FDC. Some variations exist with this scam; sometimes the gringo drinks all your Tona & Victoria.
Post Office scam
My mother once mailed to me in Nicaragua an empty old briefcase that she otherwise would have thrown out, thinking that perhaps I could use it. The post office in Masaya wanted to charge me 300 Cordobas to get it. I said no way, and it was returned safe and sound to my mother.
Sounds Just Like Grits
Somebody from Corn Island brought 3 boxes of instant grits from the USA (America) for me and sent them freight collect on the airplane from Corn Island to Puerto Cabezas and I had to pay C$500 or U$10/box.
