Pineapple ValleySubmitted by catahoula_fan on 18 July, 2006 - 15:17.
![]() Nestled between the growing town of Ticuantepe and the tiny hamlet of San Juan de La Concepcion is Pineapple Valley. A drive on the main road will give you awesome panaramic views of the surrounding valley and all that grows there, but I was looking for something a little closer up. Roger took the switchback that leads to the Chocoyero Reserve, and made a series of lefts that took us away from the reserve and landed us smack dab in the middle of huge pineapple fields. Everywhere I turned, there were pineapples, pitahayas also. Made for a nice afternoon of picture-taking! ( categories: )

Pineapples in the backyard
I have five pineapples in the backyard. This is their third year outside. They we started from the scrap top, just like a kids science project. They are about 3 feet across now. I think it's their last year. I can't bother with the indoor winter/outdoor summer experience again. From what I understand, if they bloomed next year, they might produce a smallish, bitter fruit. I can't wait to start a finca there.
Is it your backyard in Ontario?
If that's the case, I sure do envy you!
I got hungry looking at that photo. Nothing like fresh pineapple.
no, that pineapple photo is Melissa's in Nicaragua
no, that pineapple photo is Melissa's, in Nicaragua. I wish. My backyard looks like yours right now, under a foot or more of snow with another foot promised for tonight. Our pineapple produced the right amount of foliage and looked kind ccool in our backyard but, not fruit. And the fall transplant to indoors became a major nuisance. 3 years was enough. I can't wait to try it again in Nicaragua - not commercially, just for fun.
I knew that!
If that's Ontario, I live in Florida - !! I just wondered if you had your pineapple plants in the outdoors in Ontario, even if it is only in summertime. I didn't think they could take the abbreviated summers you probably have.
Today it got positively balmy - I think the thermometer showed just above freezing today. I was about ready to break out the bathing suit and try for a suntan. NOT!
I too will be trying for pineapples in Nica. Not a moment too soon.
By the way, that's a lovely photo. I so love seeing the images those of you who live there post on this site. Thanks so much for sharing them, and the stories that go with them.
I've been known to misunderstand ; )
I've been known to misunderstand ; ) but yes I did keep them in the winter every year and transplant them to the yard from June through September. They looked great and grew massive. cheapest tropical houseplant you'll likely find ; ) a real conversation border in the garden . . . and you can start them from easily from the top of a fresh pineapple.
i looked at accuweather.com....
for that valley where the pineapples came from. it was just a little too warm for me.
