nica concentration camp link

this link is in spanish

This link even tells of a 3 generation German born in Nicaragua that was imprisoned during the Second World War.

Another interesting tid-bit is that in 1893 president Zelaya offered the Germans land if they would plant coffee, and that's why you have Germans in Matagalpa.

Why

were they kicked out?

put into consentration camps

Hi cmoore56! This is a little known part of Nicaraguan History.

During the Second World War Nicaragua was under president Somoza. Somoza declared war on Germany and Japan, and did what ever the US told him to do and he made a lot of money off the US.

The US told him the names of the Germans to be put into concentration camps. Then they were sent to concentration camps in the US.

Many of the Germans were born in Nicaragua, and had contributed to the construction of the railroads, coffee plantations and they constructed many of the buildings for the benefit of Nicaragua.

These Germans were not only treated like spys and many died in the Nicaragua camps. They also were robbed of their property. Their land was put-up for action in Nicaragua. Somoza would have people bid for their lands at the auctions and the Nicaraguan solders would not let anyone else into the auctions to bid except the Somoza people.

This is part of the reason he had large land holdings of prime property. Somoza also keep one of the Germans under house arest in one of the Somoza houses and forced him to manage the railroad without pay, then he started to pay him after the war was over.

that's how I found out about it doing Nicaragua train reserch. Sad story! #-d8-(

Thanks, Norm!

Very interesting information. I wish my grandparents were still living because they would be such a wonderful source of information. After they left Port, they lived in the Dipilto/Ocotal area, where my grandaddy worked for a lumber company (he was in the accounting field). Later, he worked in Las Minas area (Bonanza, Siuna & Rosita). He then later worked for the company that my dad and his partners had in Managua, SANSA (Sociedad Agrícola Nicaraguense, SA). My guess is that he probably knew some of those Germans.

hmmmm amazing story

I hear it for the first time. This Somoza guy had to be a real jerk. However, I think that he was also a fast learner. If he did all those property confiscations, started all those concentration camps in Nicaragua he probably learned it from.....Germans. Also I have to give him a credit for his knowledge how to steal. I red somwhere that during Somozas rules there was a substantial immigration into Nicaragua. Even Costarican were looking for jobs in Somozaland. Somoza knew how to suck US taxpayers money ...and he largely pumped it into his private rancho --Nicaragua. Today all those great patriots ...from all political orientations in Nicaragua do the same thing....steal. But they export this money outside their country. That is NO GOOD Anyway...pm me where I can read about those camps etc thank you for your attention
