College and what to do.

"Tuition and student fees for the 2005-2006 academic year is $4,852.00 per semester for full-time students (12-18 semester credits) for new students.

Room and Board

-Plan A (15 meals a week) $1,140 per semester -Plan B (21 meals a week) $1,345 per semester -Room and board for summer sessions is $310 per summer session. -Private Room: $350 per semester."

This came straight from the Ave Maria College of the Americas website. the initial tuition is pretty good compared to the USA prices...they could literally drowned you. but my main focus is on the Room and Board section, wouldnt it be cheaper just to rent a small place in the for myself and possibly my boyfriend, by then, and support myself in that way? it would seem more practical to me, plus groceries there are no where near as expensive as they are in the USA...so i dont know.

but as you all know, this is coming from a 16 year olds point of view.

can anyone living there give me a better idea of how i'd be best to go about this whole situation. my parents arent in the least bit interested, they think my ideas about nicaragua are bassurd and will give me no advice at all...

thanks again, all.

Well, I went there for one semester.....

The prices for off campus housing vary greatly, but a "regular" place will cost less than the dorms($75-100? p/month), with the exception that you dont have the meal plan(you can buy the meals if you want though).....if you are looking to stray away from a lot of rules, I would look for a place in town.....Where does your BF go to school?

Feel free to PM if you have any more questions....

Some random data

I remember paying $3/semester plus books in a junior college and more like $150/semester in a California State College so those are big numbers. But, I don't know what the alternatives are here. I would, however, expect there are lots of other choices.

As for room and food, I know that the Spanish schools here charge $30/week to get you a room and food in a local house. Call that $135/mo. Sure, that's just a room but, to me, it would be a great chance to get to know people. Also, I know someone here who does a room and food for $200/mo and has been doing that with internationals for over 20 years. Another data point.

Thus, I think you have a lot more options than what you just read. In any case, I would suggest either "the college way" or a room in someone's house at least at first. It just seems like a good socialization step.

agreed.

i just looked into this college because another person here on NL directed it to me...so i checked it out and was impressed with the lower prices than the US offers... but i guess its not all that impressive at all. $150/semester!!! dang... thats long gone along with the gas prices. thats more like a days stay in school, so it seems anymore. local colleges here in indiana are looking for $20,000-24,000 a year. its ridiculous. OH and thats not for private colleges by the way...those are state schools.

but i greatly thank you for replying with some help for me.

IMHO

You’d be best to go about the education thing the student way unless you’re the professor ofcourse and the “marriage” thing the married way unless you prefer the dating scene but your choice in preference is entirely up to you even if your choice of action may not be. Good luck and above all have fun, it’s all in the attitude.

Parents

Mark Twain and/or Samuel Langhorne Clemens said:

When I was 18 years old, my father knew nothing.

When I was 25 years old, I was surprised to see how much the old man learned in the short span of 7 years.

BTW/ Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida in 1835.

thanks...

Ive come to realize/understand that my parents are far more knowledgeable than i may ever be. they just dont understand my desire and heart to want to go to Nicaragua and learn my spanish there. they want me to go to a local college in Indiana, but they wont have as good of a Spanish program as a Latin American country would...also its much cheaper, and it would be such an awesome experience. but i can kind of see my mothers heart-ache with it all because im the only child. i dont know how to help them understand the longing i have, and the oppertunity/experience it would be. id prolly learn more spanish living amongst the people in the country than id learn in any school. lol.

I have an upmost respect for my parents and their putting up with my silly ideas, since i was little even. but i just cant seem to find the agreeing line on this subject. ahh well...just one of those things.

thanks again MA.

Other worries

Maybe they're worried about you shacking up with your honey :-) Have your parents been to Nicaragua? That would make a difference. Also, if you go to school there when you're 18, you should be free to choose.

I thought $750 was a lot of tuition for a semester at the University of Samuel Clemons' Birth State. Fyl got the best deal. Not adjusting for inflation of course.

Not True

University of Florida is not located in Samuel Clemens' Birth State.

OK, I'll bite

Whatcha talkin' 'bout, Papa? Or, should we just keep the thread on topic?

Bite This!

Mark Twain was born in Florida, Missouri on November 30, 1835.

Doh!

He could have been born in Mexico. Mexico, Missouri.

Well,

at 18 she might be free to choose, but how about paying for her expenses? Marissa, John's idea about your parents going to Nicaragua is a good one. It's very difficult to convince people, particularly ones who love you very much, that any other place but home, particularly a third world country, is the place for you to be. You sort of have to ease them into the mindset of acceptance. Would they be open to going to visit?

to answer the question

My dad has gone three times, and my mother twice. This time ill be traveling alone for my first time, just to soak up the culture more and make sure this is where i should be. i appreciate all the responce you all have given me. Thanks a lot. Yes, i will be able to decide, but since my parents will be the majority source of payment for my education.

i definatly need to keep looking around and keeping my eyes peeled for a better deal. to answer someones question (sorry i dont remember your name on here) im not really sure what school my boyfriend is going to... i actually never thought about asking him about this... he'd prolly be one of my most knowledgeable sources...nnot that you guys arent knowledgeable. lol.

thanks again everyone.
