It's What's For Breakfast...

Okay, not your typical Nica breakfast, but when seafood's this cheap, WHY NOT!

Corvina fillets for ceviche...20 cordobas per pound ($1.14)

6 dozen clams...90 cordobas ($5.14)

Man, I love this country.

Can anybody tell me

Where can I find this beutyful seafood in Managua?

Or do I need to go outside town, because to be honest I never seen them in any Managua shop.

I was thinking they go very well for spaghetti vongole.

Marty's right on track.

The Isreal Market is the BEST place for cheap, fresh (sometimes frozen) seafood in Managua. The clams pictured above came from Masachapa, though. Israel usually carries conchas negras or black clams. I've got a great picture somewhere around here. Let me look and I'll post for ya.

Two places

Mercado Israel Lewites (?) is the "seafood market" in MGA. We've picked up some pretty nice snapper (pargo) there as well as extremely nice conchas negras. Corvina is cheap cheap cheap and fresh.

I was also impressed on the trip to Casares with Huehuete Bob and Barrie Coffman -- very nice, very very fresh seafood. But the road is a pit.

One thing that keeps coming up in conversation is marketing river shrimp (are you listening elnido???). As much as I love lobster, I've really fallen for river shrimp. We've got a standing order in here in Granada but usually it's been frozen, after dying in the cage. Not the best...

I live in Granada, the "not real Nicaragua"

Ok Padre

I hear you loud and clear, you make me much more happy now.

I love seafood but I was worried about finding fresh fish in Managua.

When you say river shrimps, do you mean the big ones(King Prawns?)

I love them too.

Here's a link to a picture of the critters on Dan Polley's excellent web site.

I ate them once about 15 minutes after they were caught. Makes lobster taste like bologna (but hey I like bologna too!)...

Yes those are the ones.

My God I'm getting a tiny bit hungry, wonder why?

One more source

Masachapa. I haven't been there but take a read here at catahoula_fan's excellent review...

My recomendation as well.

Masachapa is not far away from Managua, You can send a worker in the early moring hours 5ish down to Masachapa and purchase fresh seafood right off the boat around 6, and then be back in Managua by 8ish, leaving plenty of time to see what you have, prepare and cook it for lunch.

Sunshine again

You guys are giving me very valuable tips, I can't wait to settle down in Nicaragua and prepare my first meals down there.

I think is going to be a fun ride :-)

delicous!

I just saw this photo in the side screen and Now I am extremely hungry.

It´s beautiful

But don´t over do it with the clams, they have a way of giving people funny ideas of things to do in the daytime
